The Fallen Giant
Sail to Marrow Cross (2–4 passages away)1 Investigate the fallen ancient oak at Marrow Cross.
The ancient oak lies across the village crossroads, as long as your ship, its heartwood dense and sound—the kind of timber old master shipwrights used for keels. The lord's reeve has roped the tree off to build new gates for the keep, while the village tenants—whose community hall lost its roof in the same gale—stand silently outside the rope with their saws in a handcart.
- Buy a heavy beam of heartwood from the reeve. (35 silver)Costs 35 silverThe reeve has his men saw a thick beam from the trunk, stamps your bill of sale, and goes back to guarding the tree against the villagers.
- Bring your ship in after dark to help the villagers haul the oak away. After moonset, you bring your ship low over the crossroads with all lanterns shuttered and lower your cargo winch hook into forty pairs of waiting hands.
- Warn the reeve that the villagers plan to saw up the oak tonight. The reeve doubles his guard, pays you twenty silver from the keep's gate fund, and has his men cut a heavy heartwood beam for your ship while the villagers trudge home with their saw cart.+20 silver
- Leave it for now.You leave the crossroads behind; an oak that size isn't going anywhere without a ship's winch.
The Village Carpenter's Plea
Right away2The massive heartwood beam rests in your hold, dense and rot-proof. Before you cast off, the village carpenter, Hesper Loam, approaches your rail cap in hand. "Our community hall needs a single main ridge beam, and half of your timber would make it. The reeve will burn the scrap branches to ash before he gives us a single stick. I have no silver, captain, but I can pay you in skilled carpentry."
- Refuse and keep the entire heartwood beam for your ship. She nods as if she expected no less and walks back to her saw cart.
- Saw your heartwood beam in half and give her the ridge beam she needs.Your crew helps her saw the beam in two right in the road while the reeve watches helplessly from behind his rope—since you bought the timber legally, it is yours to share.+1 The Free Captains standing
- [Repair 2] Have crewmate find a sound ridge beam hidden in the reeve's scrap-branch pile.Crew: Repair 2+crewmate searches the reeve's brushwood pile and uncovers a straight limb thick enough for a hall roof. Because the reeve already wrote the branches off as scrap, the villagers get their ridge beam while your heartwood timber stays whole.+1 Repair skill XP+1 The Free Captains standing
By Shuttered Lanterns
Right away3 Finish winching the fallen oak onto the villagers' carts before the reeve's sloop stops you.
Your cargo winch lifts what forty villagers could never budge by hand. Half the sawn oak is loaded onto their carts when your lookout spots running lanterns cresting the hill: someone alerted the reeve's patrol sloop! Down on the road, the villagers look up at your deck—they cannot lift the remaining timber without your winch.
- Engage and fight off the patrol sloop while the villagers finish loading. The patrol sloop surges over the hill crest with battle lanterns blazing just as your winch lifts the next heavy beam.Battle: Household ship · Close range, GaleIf you win:+25 silver
- [Helm 2] Hover low over the roofs so the sloop can't fire without hitting the village.Crew: Helm 2+crewmate holds the ship right above the village rooftops, blocking the sloop's line of fire until the last timber is winched onto the carts. By dawn, the oak has been sawed into roof beams inside a dozen barns, leaving the sloop nothing to seize—and a prime heartwood beam stowed in your hold.+1 Helm skill XP
- Release the winch cable and flee with the heartwood beam already in your hold. You unhook the winch and flee with one heartwood beam aboard, leaving half the oak in the road and forty villagers staring up at your stern. The patrol sloop puts a cannon shot through your rigging as you escape and logs your ship's name.−2 hull+1 heat
Masterwork Heartwood
At a port4 Take the marrow-oak heartwood timber to a port shipwright.
The port shipwright raps his knuckles against the dense red timber and whistles. "True marrow-oak heartwood—I haven't seen a beam like this in ten years. It never rots and refuses to sink. I can mill it into heavy keel knees to hold your spine together in a crash, or saw it into outer hull planking. There isn't enough wood for both."
- Have him cut keel knees to reinforce your ship's spine. He bolts the marrow-oak knees along your keel, giving your hull formidable resilience when taking fatal damage.Relic: Heartwood Keel BeamThe questline ends here.
- Have him saw the beam into heavy outer hull planking. He fits thick belts of red marrow-oak planking along your waterline, permanently reinforcing your hull.+3 max hullThe questline ends here.
- [Repair 2] Have crewmate lay out the saw cuts so you get both the keel knees and extra planking.Crew: Repair 2+crewmate spaces the saw cuts so tightly that after bolting in the marrow-oak keel knees, there is still enough timber left to reinforce a section of hull planking.Relic: Heartwood Keel Beam+1 max hullThe questline ends here.
- Sell the rare heartwood beam to the shipwright for silver. (85 silver)He counts out eighty-five silver on the spot before you can change your mind.+85 silverThe questline ends here.
Raising the Hall Roof
Right away5With every villager pulling on the ropes, the new hall roof goes up in three days. Once the last oak peg is driven home, carpenter Hesper Loam boards your ship with her measuring rule and chalk. "Marrow Cross pays its debts in craft." She inspects your hull from bow to stern and chalks precise saw lines along your heartwood timber so nothing is wasted. "A shipyard can cut keel knees or armor planking from this—or I can plank your hull right here."
- Take the chalk-marked heartwood timber to a professional shipwright. With her precise cutting marks chalked on the end grain, any shipwright will be able to mill the timber without wasting an inch.
- Ask what else the villagers salvaged from the fallen oak before you head to a shipyard.Wild bees had nested in the oak's hollow upper limb for forty years. Because you fought for the village, they gift you five crates of honeycombs for your galley and thirty silver worth of beeswax.+5 provisions+30 silver
- Have Hesper Loam use the heartwood to plank and repair your hull right here.Working with the precision of a master hall-builder, she fits thick heartwood planks along your hull while the grateful villagers feed and rest your crew for three days.+2 max hull+5 provisionsHeal 30 HPThe questline ends here.
