The Dungeon Fee at Graywatch
Sail to Graywatch Keep (2–4 passages away)1 Search the old underground armory beneath Graywatch Keep.
Graywatch is half in ruins; its impoverished lord lives in the only wing that still has a roof. At the dungeon door, his steward sits beside a dusty fee ledger whose last entry is six years old. "Thirty silver to go down, though I wouldn't risk the dark myself." Below the keep wall, however, village children are hauling water from a deep stone well that connects to the same undercroft.
- Pay the 30-silver fee and enter through the main dungeon door.Costs 30 silverLandfall: The Graywatch Undercroft
- Climb down the villagers' well shaft without paying the fee.Landfall: The Graywatch Well
- Leave it for now.The steward closes his fee ledger and settles back into his chair as you leave.
The Underground Armory
Right away2 Choose which weapons to haul up from the Graywatch armory.
The underground armory is bone-dry and racked to the ceiling with oiled boarding cutlasses, untouched for forty years since the household disbanded its marine company. Against the far wall, something much heavier sits beneath a canvas dust sheet. With daylight fading, your crew only has time to haul up one load.
- Arm your crew with the racks of oiled boarding cutlasses. The forty-year-old steel is finer than anything in your lockers. Your crew sharpens the blades at the courtyard grindstone on the way out.Relic: Blooded Cutlasses
- [Marine] Have crewmate select the best-balanced cutlasses and drill the crew.Crew: Marinecrewmate tests twenty blades to pick out the finest steel, then drills your watch with them until nightfall.Relic: Blooded Cutlasses+1 Melee skill XP
- Uncover and haul up the heavy weapon beneath the dust sheet.Beneath the canvas sits a well-greased ship's deck gun. As you haul it out, the steward lazily logs it as 'assorted salvage'.Weapon: a random weapon
Caught at the Wellhead
Right away3 Deal with the steward waiting at the top of the well shaft.
Your crew climbs back up the well rope carrying enough oiled cutlasses to arm the entire ship—only to find the steward sitting on the stone rim with two tired guards. "Poaching without a dungeon permit," he says dryly. "The penalty is double the entry fee—sixty silver—or forfeiture of the blades. Personally, I'd rather take a cut of the steel; my lord is months behind on my wages."
- Refuse to pay and cast off with the stolen cutlasses.Underpaid guards will not risk their necks chasing an armed airship, so you lift off unchallenged—though the steward reports your ship's name to the regional authorities.Relic: Blooded Cutlasses+2 heat
- Pay the 60-silver poaching fine and keep all the cutlasses.Costs 60 silverHe signs a formal receipt and wishes you well as your crew sharpens their new blades at the courtyard grindstone.Relic: Blooded Cutlasses
- [Vulpine] Bribe the underpaid steward with a share of the blades.Crew: Vulpinecrewmate offers the steward one cutlass in every five to sell on the side. He pockets his share, closes his fee book without reporting you, and lets your crew carry the rest aboard.Relic: Blooded Cutlasses
- Surrender the cutlasses to the steward in exchange for a 40-silver finder's fee.He pays you forty silver from his fee box, looking happier than he has in years. Then he taps the brick wall behind his gatehouse chair. "There's a walled-up room behind here I've wondered about for six years—and you have the crew to break it open."+40 silver
The Man-at-Arms Who Sold the Tip
Right away4When you return to your ship, the dismissed man-at-arms who sold you the tip—Dane Orrick—is waiting by your ramp with his kit bag packed. "So the racks were still full. I maintained that armory for nine years before the lord turned me out with two years' wages unpaid. I don't want a cut of the steel—just give me a berth on your crew, or twenty silver to take the road to a hold that actually pays."
- Sign Dane Orrick onto your crew as a veteran marine. He stows his kit bag beneath the nearest gun and reports for the first watch.New crewmate: Dane Orrick, Human, MarineThe questline ends here.
- Sign him onto your crew and ask him about the deck gun you hauled up.He laughs. "That was the old lord's favorite gun—it pulls slightly to port, and I know just how to shim the mount." He spends his first evening aboard truing its aim and brings up a crate of six ballista bolts that had been stored behind it.New crewmate: Dane Orrick, Human, Marine+6 boltsThe questline ends here.
- Give him 20 silver to pay his way down the road.Costs 20 silverHe counts the silver and nods in thanks. Before leaving, he shares a secret the steward never knew: the old household marines bricked up a second supply cache right behind the wall of the steward's own gatehouse.
- Turn him away; you already paid him for the tip.He stares at you for a quiet moment, shoulders his kit bag, and trudges down the hill road. The questline ends here.
The Gatehouse Cache
Right away5The brick partition behind the steward's chair is only a single course thick. Having wondered what lay behind it for six years, the underpaid steward watches without complaint as your crew knocks it down. Inside sits the marine company's reserve storehouse: crates of ballista bolts, a rack of boarding axes, and a company pay chest with silver still inside.
- Claim the boarding axes and ballista bolts, and let the steward keep the pay chest.Your crew mounts the boarding axes by your rail and stows twelve ballista bolts in the magazine, while the delighted steward pockets the pay chest as his long-overdue wages.Fitting: Boarding Axes+12 boltsThe questline ends here.
- Split the silver in the marine pay chest with the steward. (60 silver)Since it was his gatehouse wall, you split the coin evenly with the steward, walking away with sixty silver.+60 silverThe questline ends here.
