Frost-Rimed Skiffs

Right away1
Three farm skiffs fly low and sluggishly, crammed with shivering tenants, hens, and frost-blackened cabbages. An unnatural winter has settled over their valley: the irrigation ditches froze solid before the harvest was in, and the village well is a column of blue ice. "It's coming from Skerrow Keep," their headman tells you. "Since the old Warden died up at the keep, the frost has spread over every field our lord owns, and nobody can say why."
  • Ask for the heading to Skerrow Keep.
He traces the route in the frost on your rail. "The Lord of Skerrow will pay well to have the spell broken—though his neighbor, Lady Harrow, would pay to keep Skerrow frozen until she can buy it cheap."
  • Share 3 provisions with the freezing families first.

The refugees eat gratefully on deck. In return, a twelve-year-old girl who tended the dead Warden's fires tells you which cellar door he used and marks the safest air lanes to the keep.

crewmate touches a frost crystal to one tongue and frowns. "This is a single sustained spell, still drawing power. There must be a massive reserve of mana sitting beneath that keep."

You fly on, leaving the three frost-white skiffs drifting across the autumn sky.

The Shadowing Sloop

Right away2
Deal with Lady Harrow's patrol sloop shadowing the refugee skiffs.
A mile behind the refugees, an armed patrol sloop flies with darkened lanterns. "That's Lady Harrow's ship," the headman warns. "She wants Skerrow emptied of tenants so she can force our lord to sell the estate cheap. Whenever one of our skiffs lands, her men are waiting on the dock with indentured rent contracts."
  • Drive the sloop off.
Taken by surprise when a warship turns to defend the farm skiffs, the patrol sloop scrambles to battle stations.

  • Ignore the patrol sloop and question the tenants about Skerrow Keep.
The headman glances back once at the shadowing sloop, then turns to answer your questions.
  • Call out to Lady Harrow's sloop and ask what her lady is paying.
The sloop's captain answers politely and lowers a boat at once. The village headman watches grimly as the officer rows over, steering his farm skiffs far away before the boat reaches your rail.

The Girl Who Kept the Fires

Right away3
Wrapped in a burlap sack, the twelve-year-old girl who tended the old Warden's hearth climbs onto your deck. "Before the Warden died, he stopped eating and speaking, keeping one hand resting on a long weapon rack in the ice cellar. That's where the freeze is coming from. The lord's guards are too terrified to go down the stairs—something dangerous has woken up in the cold down there."
  • Thank the girl and set course for Skerrow Keep.
She climbs back over the rail to her mother while the headman double-checks your chart heading to Skerrow.
  • Ask what she carried out of the keep in her sack.
Because you fed her people, the headman nods permission. From her burlap sack, the girl pulls three stoppered flasks of the Warden's own restorative draughts. "He told me to save these for after the work was done."

  • [Surgeon] Have crewmate treat the refugees' frostbite before you part.
    Crew: Surgeon
crewmate goes from skiff to skiff with warm water and wool bandages, saving every frostbitten finger. In gratitude, the headman gives you five lamp crystals the fleeing villagers no longer have lamps to burn.

Lady Harrow's Offer

Right away4
The sloop's captain climbs aboard carrying a coin purse and a sealed letter. "Lady Harrow's yacht is anchored just outside the frost line at Skerrow Keep, waiting for its lord to freeze out or sell. She will pay you for two things: don't break the cellar spell yet, and tell her which door leads down so her own men can clear it once she owns the keep. Take this letter to her yacht to claim the main payout."
  • Accept the 30-silver advance and take the letter for Lady Harrow.
He hands over a thirty-silver advance. "Lady Harrow holds the larger purse aboard her yacht," he says before returning to his sloop.

  • [Noble-born] Make the captain write the exact payout amount into the letter.
    Crew: Noble
crewmate insists the captain write the promised sum directly into the letter over his signature—binding Lady Harrow to her officer's word—and collects forty-five silver in advance.
    +45 silver
  • Reject the bribe and send the captain back to his sloop.
He shrugs. "My lady won't offer twice." He rows back to his sloop and resumes shadowing the refugees.

Skerrow Keep

Sail to Skerrow Keep (2–4 passages away)5
Investigate the unnatural frost gripping Skerrow Keep.
Skerrow Keep stands locked in its own private winter. Thick icicles hang from the ward posts, and the tenant fields are frozen white up to the boundary hedge, while green autumn country lies just beyond. Outside the frost line, Lady Harrow's house yacht waits at anchor for Skerrow's lord to freeze or sell.
  • Take a landing party down into Skerrow's ice cellar.

  • Leave it for now.
You hold position outside the frost line while the keep stays locked in ice.

The Frozen Warden's Work

Right away6
Decide what reward to claim from the dead Warden's cellar.
At the bottom of the cellar, the old Warden sits frozen solid at his workbench, one hand still gripping a launcher racked with two oar-length spears of ancient ice. He died channeling mana into the weapon, and the moment his hand is lifted away, the cellar begins to thaw.

Shivering in three layers of coats, the Lord of Skerrow offers you the ice-spear launcher as your reward—or, if you leave the weapon for his walls, asks you to deliver the Warden's spellbooks to the dead man's sister.
  • Claim the glacier-lance battery for your gun deck.
Your gunners mount the launcher on your gun deck packed in wet straw. It fires twin spears of ancient ice each volley, freezing whatever it strikes.
    The questline ends here.
  • Leave him the weapon and take the contract to deliver the Warden's books to his sister.
The lord packs the spellbooks into a sealed crate. "His sister lives across the border. She knows what his life's work is worth, and she will reward you well for bringing it home."

  • Claim the glacier-lance battery and ask that his returning tenants pay no rent this year.
Having heard how you drove off Lady Harrow's sloop, the grateful lord agrees at once. You mount the twin ice-spear launcher on your gun deck, and the first tenant skiffs returning home share six crates of late-harvest provisions with your crew.

Still Frozen

Right away7
Bundled in heavy furs atop her new ramparts, Lady Harrow discovers that buying the keep did nothing to thaw it—and her own guards are too terrified to descend the cellar stairs. On the second morning, she summons you. "You know the cellar door, and you know your trade. Name your price to go down there and end this freeze."
  • Lead your crew and her guards down into the cellar to break the spell.
  • [Ice mage] Send crewmate down alone to command the ice spell to stop.
    Crew: Ice caster · Mage
crewmate descends alone with a single lantern and returns an hour later as the entire keep exhales and thaws at once. Lady Harrow pays sixty silver, and crewmate returns having memorized a spell from the dead Warden's notes.

The Warden's Sister

At the delivery port8
Deliver the dead Warden's spellbooks to his sister in the next region.
The Warden's older sister is a mage herself. Standing in her doorway, she reads the first page of his notes and shakes her head. "He recorded how he sustained that ice spell—holding it nine full days after his heart stopped. No mage should ever hold a working that long." She looks past you at your ship. "Still, a safe measure of his technique would serve your Casting Room well."
  • Let her inscribe her brother's mana-spring rune into your Casting Room.
She sets a cold river stone into the floor of your Casting Room and carves a single line of her brother's formula around it, causing mana to well up like a fresh spring for your mages.
    The questline ends here.
  • [Mage] Ask her to teach crewmate from her brother's spellbooks.

After a week of intensive lessons at her kitchen table, crewmate returns aboard with a new spellbook and sharper casting skill, along with eighty silver for your delivery fee.
