A Herald's Scroll Case
Right away1Among the floating wreckage you find a sealed herald's scroll case. Inside lies a two-page peace treaty ending the forty-year feud between House Vey and House Orme, though neither side has signed it yet. A note pinned to the parchment reads: "To be witnessed and signed at the Boundary Stone."
- Take the treaty and set course for the Boundary Stone. One house wanted this peace badly enough to send a herald—and someone else wanted it stopped badly enough to ambush him.
- [Noble-born] Have crewmate inspect the noble seals first.Crew: Noblecrewmate recognizes both family seals as well as the slain herald's personal mark, and crewmate plots the exact air lanes the two house yachts will use to reach the Boundary Stone.Reveal 3 waypoints
- Burn the treaty; a noble feud is none of your business. The two parchment pages curl into ash in seconds. The questline ends here.
The Survivor in the Wreckage
Right away2Clinging to a drifting keel timber in the wreckage is a mercenary wearing no house colors. He starts talking before your crew even pulls him dry. "We were hired to kill the herald, not read what he carried! A cloaked steward paid us at night in a tavern—I never asked which house he served, but I can point him out if you keep me alive."
- Bring the mercenary aboard as a witness. (1 provisions)Costs 1 provisionsYou give him a blanket, a ration of food, and a guarded corner of the hold until you reach the Boundary Stone.
- [Surgeon] Have crewmate set his broken arm and question him.Crew: SurgeonWhile crewmate splints his arm, the mercenary spills everything he knows—which tavern the steward used, what cloak he wore, and which approach lanes the two house yachts will take to the Boundary Stone.Reveal 2 waypoints
- Take his coin purse and leave him clinging to his timber. You pocket thirty unmarked silver coins from his belt and leave him adrift on the keel timber for a patrol to find.+30 silver
The Boundary Stone
Sail to The Boundary Stone (2–4 passages away)3 Carry the unsigned peace treaty to the Boundary Stone.
Two armed house yachts hover on opposite sides of a floating boundary monolith, each waiting for a herald who will never arrive. Lady Vey signals you first: she is ready to sign the treaty and will reward whoever forces Lord Orme to sign as well. Lord Orme signals second: he refuses to sign and will pay handsomely if you hand the scroll over to him to destroy.
- Side with Lady Vey and attack Lord Orme's yacht to force his signature.Lord Orme answers by powering up his yacht's Casting Room for battle.Battle: Household ship
- Sell the treaty scroll to Lord Orme and fight off Lady Vey's yacht.Orme burns the treaty at his rail in full view of Lady Vey. Her yacht immediately turns its guns on you while Orme hangs back to let you take the brunt of her fury.Battle: Household ship
- [Noble-born] Invoke the ancient noble law of witness to compel both houses to sign.Crew: Noble
- Put the captured mercenary on the Boundary Stone between both yachts to point out who hired him.The mercenary points at a steward on Lord Orme's deck—and then points at Lady Vey's steward as well. Both stewards go pale: it turns out both houses secretly hired the exact same ambush crew through the same tavern, each hoping to blame the other for breaking the peace.
- Leave it for now.Neither yacht moves as you pull away; after forty years of feuding, they can wait a little longer.
Signed and Sealed
Right away4The peace treaty is now signed and sealed by both houses. By custom, however, it does not become binding law until it hangs in the great hall of the house that petitioned for peace. With her own herald dead, Lady Vey entrusts the treaty to you to carry to her hold—but before you cast off, Lord Orme's boat master rows over with a quiet bribe: his lord will pay handsomely if that signed scroll never reaches her hall.
- Reject the bribe and deliver the signed treaty to Lady Vey's hold. You send Orme's boat master back empty-handed, and Lady Vey's yacht escorts you toward her hold with her house banners flying.
- [Quartermaster] Demand an official herald's courier fee from Lady Vey first.Crew: Quartermastercrewmate quotes the official herald's fee schedule from memory. Lady Vey pays out forty silver without complaint, and you send Orme's boat master away empty-handed.+40 silver
- Betray Lady Vey and hand the signed treaty over to Lord Orme's boat master. The boat master slips the scroll inside his coat while Lady Vey's yacht is already too far ahead to see the handoff. He directs you to Lord Orme's hunting tower to collect your payout.
Lord Orme's Payout
Sail to Lord Orme's Hunting Tower (1–3 passages away)5 Collect your payment from Lord Orme at his hunting tower.
Lord Orme receives you in a hall hung with stuffed skywyrm heads, thoroughly pleased with himself. "Forty years of war, and good for forty more—nothing keeps a hold sharp like a feud!" He gestures toward a chest of silver and a deck gun crewed at his battery rail, offering to pay you in coin or artillery.
- Take the chest of silver. (150 silver)His steward counts out one hundred and fifty silver twice in full view of the hall.+150 silverThe questline ends here.
- Take a ship's weapon from his battery along with a smaller purse. His gun crew unbolts a heavy weapon from his rampart and winches it onto your deck, and Orme adds fifty silver so no one can call him stingy.Weapon: a random weapon+50 silverThe questline ends here.
- [Gunner] Have crewmate pick out the best gun—and steal the ranging sights off the next one.Crew: Gunnercrewmate inspects the battery rail, selects the finest weapon, and quietly unbolts a masterwork ranging sight from the adjacent gun while Lord Orme is boasting.Weapon: a random weaponRelic: Precision RangefinderThe questline ends here.
Both Houses Exposed
Right away6With the hired ambush survivor standing on the Boundary Stone between them, neither lord dares ask aloud who paid him first. Both sign the treaty in a hurry—and then each sends a boat to your ship in secret to buy your silence and make sure the witness never reaches a Guild court.
- Take hush money from both houses and keep quiet. (160 silver)You collect two heavy purses from two boats that pointedly ignore each other, then drop the mercenary off safely at the next port with his fare.+160 silverThe questline ends here.
- Refuse their bribes and bring the witness to the Guild court. The Guild court fines both noble houses heavily for murdering a herald on a Guild sky lane. Instead of coin, the court awards your ship a Guild Master's Seal that boosts payment on all future shipping contracts.Relic: Guild Master's Seal+1 The Guild standingThe questline ends here.
- [Marine] Have crewmate recruit the mercenary into your crew while taking reduced hush money.Crew: MarineKnowing neither noble house will let him live long ashore, the mercenary looks to your ship. crewmate vouches that he can hold a deck in a fight, so he signs onto your crew as a marine—and you still pocket one hundred silver in hush money from the two stewards.New crewmate: Marine+100 silverThe questline ends here.
Lady Vey's Reward
At a port7 Call at Lady Vey's hold to claim your promised reward.
The signed peace treaty now hangs framed in Lady Vey's great hall. A compact woman with a soldier's bearing, she meets you on the dock. "My yacht wore wyrm-scale armor plating through forty years of war with Lord Orme. With the feud ended, she no longer needs it. Take the wyrm-scale plating for your own hull, or take your reward in silver from the household treasury."
- Claim the wyrm-scale armor plating for your hull. Her shipwrights bolt the overlapping wyrm scales along your hull, giving your ship a one-in-five chance to deflect incoming shots completely.Relic: Dragonscale PlankingThe questline ends here.
- [Warden] Ask for a week of training and thread at her keep's ward loom instead.Crew: Wardencrewmate spends a week training with her master weaver and returns with a full frame of high-grade ward thread, upgrading your Ward Loom, sharpening crewmate's skill, and leaving forty silver besides.Upgrade: Ward Loom+1 Wards skill XP+40 silverThe questline ends here.
- Take the 70 silver. You collect a heavy chest of one hundred and forty silver—a bargain for Lady Vey compared to forty years of war.+140 silverThe questline ends here.
