The Bridge of Frost

Sail to The Twin Spires (2–5 passages away)1
Locate the ice bridge between the Twin Spires while the deep freeze holds.
Three nights of hard frost have locked a massive span of blue ice between the Twin Spires. Frozen deep inside the translucent ice hangs a sixty-year-old clan warbird, masts and all, like an insect in amber. Once the noon sun hits the spires, the ice bridge will begin to thaw and crack.

Sixty Years in the Ice

Right away2
Search the frozen warbird's hold before the ice bridge gives way.
The warbird's cargo hold is dry and dead silent. Lashed to her keel beam is a massive glacier-lance weapon forged of ancient, unmelting ice. Beside it rests a carved black-wood otter totem inscribed with the name of Stillwater Aerie. Overhead, the ice bridge groans and begins to drip—you only have time to haul out one prize before the ship drops!
  • Haul up the ancient glacier-lance weapon.
It takes six crewmen in heavy gloves to wrestle the freezing weapon free. Clan shipyards won't mount ancient ice weapons, so you'll need a charter shipyard in the next region to fit it.
  • Take the black-wood otter totem to return to Stillwater Aerie.
You tuck the carved otter totem under your arm just as the ice bridge groans and drops the trapped warbird another foot.

The Crystal Shaft

Right away3
Halfway up the ice shaft, the ancient glacier-lance begins radiating unnatural cold, growing thick new frost across the tunnel walls and threatening to seal you in! Below your feet, the warbird lurches downward in the cracking ice, and the six crewmen hauling the weapon can no longer feel their fingers.
  • Keep hauling by hand and trust your crew's heavy gloves.
  • [Ice mage] Have crewmate suppress the glacier-lance's freezing aura during the climb.

The Ice Bridge Cracks

Right away4
A crack splits the ice bridge from spire to spire like a cannon shot, and the warbird drops another foot! Scrambling toward the exit hatch with the totem, you pass the frozen captain still seated at her chart table under a glaze of ice. A purser's strongbox is frozen to the deck beside her boots, and a knotted otter-clan name cord is tied around her wrist.
  • Untie the knotted name cord from the captain's wrist to bring home to her clan.
You slip the knotted wool name cord intact from her wrist and scramble up the shaft seconds before the hold floor gives way.
  • Hack the frozen purser's strongbox free with an axe before escaping.
  • [Lutrine] Have crewmate untie the captain's name cord and speak the otter-clan rites for the dead.
    Crew: Lutrine
crewmate carefully unties the wrist cord and speaks the traditional river-clan blessing over the fallen captain, spending a perilous extra minute that Stillwater Aerie will deeply honor.

The Weapon Wright

At a port in the next region5
Take the ancient glacier-lance to a weapon wright in the next region to mount it.
The weapon wright—a frost-scarred lutrine engineer—circles the ancient ice weapon twice in awe. "I haven't seen true glacier-ice in thirty years. I can mount it on your gun deck so it fires twin freezing spears each volley, or I can buy the weapon off you right now for silver."
  • Have her mount the glacier-lance battery on your gun deck.
She mounts the ancient lance in a cold-iron cradle on your gun deck, where a permanent rime of frost spreads across the surrounding planks.

Stillwater

Sail to Stillwater Aerie (2–4 passages away)6
Return the carved black otter totem to Stillwater Aerie.
Stillwater Aerie is built around a steaming geothermal spring high in the snows. When you place the black-wood otter totem in the hands of the clan elder, Old Pell, he sinks to his knees. "That was my mother's warbird—we burned an empty funeral pyre for her sixty years ago." Rising to his feet, he says, "Stillwater pays its debts. Name what your ship needs."
  • Ask for a supply of Stillwater's famous hot-spring healing balm and silver.
They load a dozen sealed crocks of pine-and-mineral healing balm into your ship along with a purse of fifty silver.

  • Present Old Pell with the knotted name cord from his mother's wrist.

The Collector's Agent

At a port7
Find a private collector at a port to buy the black otter totem.
A sharp-dressed vulpine broker examines the carved black otter totem twice and quotes a price from her catalog. "Clan totems almost never reach the private market—they either go home to their kin or burn on a pyre. My wealthy client will pay handsomely in silver for a sixty-year-old relic, or trade you an artificer's weather-bell from his collection."
  • Sell it.
She pays out one hundred and twenty silver—though within a month, every otter clan on the coast hears which ship sold Stillwater's sacred dead.

  • Have second thoughts and take the totem home to Stillwater Aerie instead.
She snaps her catalog shut. "Then you're a poor merchant with a clean conscience." Since it costs her nothing, she marks Stillwater Aerie's location on your chart.

The Funeral Pyre

Right away8
Sixty years late, the clan burns the black otter totem atop a wooden raft in the center of the hot spring while the entire aerie keeps vigil until dawn. At first light, Old Pell brings out an instrument wrapped in oiled leather. "My mother read the weather for three clans. The morning she flew into that freeze, she left her sky-orrery on its hook—saying a frost that hard needed no forecast."
  • Accept the sky-reader's brass orrery for your helm.
Crafted of brass and bone rings that shift with the barometer, the orrery hangs beside your wheel and reveals safe paths through hail and frost.
    The questline ends here.
  • Leave her mother's orrery hanging in the aerie and accept their healing balm and silver instead.
Moved by your respect, Old Pell hangs the orrery back on its hook, loads a dozen crocks of healing balm and fifty silver aboard your ship, and praises your name to every clan roost on the coast.
