The Dark Picket

Sail to The Dark Picket (1–3 passages away)1
Investigate the extinguished Crown lamp-ship on the picket line and pick up Commander Brask's trail.
A Crown beacon-ship drifts silently where the chart says a containment lamp should be burning. Her great ward-lamp is cold, and the gray fog of the Hush laps right up against her hull rail like rising water.

Four survivors huddle on the foredeck wrapped in heavy canvas, while the ship's lamp-log remains chained to the bridge desk. Out in the gray mist, a pale shape is circling back to finish off the vessel.
  • Inspect the chained lamp-log on the bridge.
The schedule of dark hours was written a full week in advance by a headquarters clerk and signed personally by Commander Brask—ordering this beacon extinguished for 'maintenance' at the exact hour the Hush attacked. Your first mate copies down the remaining scheduled blackout hours for the other lamp-ships down the line.

  • [Surgeon] Have crewmate treat the four freezing survivors on the foredeck first.
    Crew: Surgeon
crewmate revives three of the survivors with hot broth, and the fourth—a young lamp-trimmer—whispers hoarsely: "Commander Brask didn't take silver for turning out the lights. I carried his letters. He traded the dark hours for names." The grateful picket master gives you two spare aether flasks from her stores.

You pull back from the drifting hull, leaving the cold beacon-ship to the fog.

A Second Hunter

Right away2
A Free Muster brig sails down the beacon line and hoves to off your quarter. Her captain—a lean, gray-haired forty-year-old named Nerys Kettering—hails you across the gap.

"The Crown wants Brask brought back alive so a show trial can calm the fleet. I lost two Muster ships during his traitorous blackouts, and I want him dead. His paymaster runs the fuel anchorage astern of us, while Brask's own flagship sailed straight into the Hush an hour ago with every lamp blazing. I'm hunting his flagship right now—fly with me or stay out of my way."
  • Let Kettering go and sail to the fuel anchorage to question Brask's paymaster.
Kettering shrugs and turns her brig into the gray fog alone. "Then I'll see you at the end of the line, Captain. Bring wrist irons if you like—I'm bringing chain-shot."
  • Join Captain Kettering and pursue Brask's flagship down its illuminated wake.
Kettering sends a rowboat across with a cask of lamp spirit and two spare flasks. "Light every lantern on your hull! The gray fog recoils from bright ward-light—that's how Brask is cutting a path through it."

  • [Lookout] Have your lookout time the rhythm of the flagship's receding beacon flashes before visiting the paymaster.
    Room: Lookout
Timing the distant flashes in the fog, your lookout realizes Brask's flagship isn't fleeing at all—she is steaming at a measured pace toward a scheduled rendezvous. With her exact heading plotted on your chart, you turn back to question his paymaster.

The Fuel Anchorage

At a port3
Dock at the fuel anchorage and question Commander Brask's paymaster.
The fuel anchorage consists of a ring of crystal barges moored around a small tin office, where Paymaster Benet Tull clutches an account book tightly against his chest.

"He didn't sell the line for silver," Tull blurts out before you even ask, opening the book before you. Beside every scheduled blackout hour is a list of names, crossed off one by one. "Those are the lost crewmen of the Lark Aloft—the ship where Brask's own daughter served as first officer. For every hour he darkens a beacon, the Hush releases a few of her crew alive."
  • Seize the paymaster's book as evidence and demand Brask's rendezvous coordinates.
Tull hands the book over readily. "Forty crewmen are still left in the fog, and the final exchange is tonight at the buoy off the old slipway. Brask will be waiting there with every lamp on his frigate lit." He marks the buoy on your chart.

  • [Quartermaster] Have crewmate audit the fuel requisitions recorded beneath the list of names.
    Crew: Quartermaster
crewmate uncovers the rest of the conspiracy: Brask's flagship requisitioned triple her normal ration of lamp spirit, countersigned by the Crown Provost Marshal himself—meaning high command knew what Brask was doing and let him proceed. Tull marks the rendezvous buoy on your chart and pays crewmate a clerk's fee to take both ledgers off his hands.
    +25 silver
  • Leave the book with Tull and ask only where to find Commander Brask.
Tull marks a buoy off the old slipway deep inside the gray fog. "He'll be there tonight with every beacon blazing—you can't miss him." Before you leave, he tops off your flask racks from the fleet reserve.

Tull clutches the account book tightly against his chest as you step back out.

The Lit Wake

Right away4
Deep inside the Hush, the wake of Brask's flagship forms a narrow corridor of clear air that is slowly closing behind her. Ahead of you, Kettering's brig races down the lane with every lantern blazing—until a Crown picket cutter looms across the passage with her gun ports open.

"Halt by order of Commander Brask!" her young lieutenant hails. "No vessel passes this point!" Kettering doesn't even slacken sail.
  • Ready your guns and fight past the picket cutter alongside Kettering.
The picket cutter fires her port broadside at Kettering's brig, then pivots to bring her starboard battery to bear on you.

  • Call out to the young lieutenant and ask what Commander Brask is trading the blackouts for.
The young officer hesitates, then answers truthfully: "Our own captured sailors—the Hush gives back a few for every dark hour." Seeing Kettering already past him, he stands down his guns and gives you the exact bearing to the rendezvous buoy.

The Exchange Buoy

Sail to The Exchange Buoy (1–3 passages away)5
Reach the exchange buoy inside the Hush where Commander Brask is holding his rendezvous.
Commander Brask's frigate, the Vigilance, rides at the buoy inside a glowing dome of clear air created by dozens of blazing ward-lamps. Lashed directly alongside her hull is a pale Hollow tender. One by one, dazed, gray-faced sailors are being helped up the ladder onto the frigate's deck like sleepwalkers while a tall officer counts each survivor aboard.

Brask has spotted your ship, yet he makes no move to flee.
  • Attack immediately while the Hollow tender is still lashed alongside the Vigilance.
The Vigilance severs her lines to the tender and swings around to fight—while the Hollow vessel turns to attack you as well.

  • Slip in unseen during the scheduled blackout hour with your own lamps darkened.

  • Hold fire and call out to Commander Brask to hear what he has to say.

  • Leave it for now.
You hold your distance while the ward-lamps of the Vigilance burn brightly against the surrounding fog.

The Commander in Irons

Right away6
Commander Brask sits quietly in your brig with his hands resting on his knees. Out in the illuminated lane, both Captain Kettering's Muster brig and the Crown Provost Marshal's prisoner transport have caught up with you.

"Your Crown warrant demands him alive," Kettering calls across the water, "but if you hand him over to my ship instead, the Free Muster will pay you a handsome bounty—and no one ever needs to know which of us pulled the trigger."
  • Deliver Brask alive to the Crown Provost Marshal as your bounty contract requires.
Crown marines escort Brask aboard the transport in silence while Kettering glares from her rail before wheeling her brig away. The Admiralty gets its court-martial, and the beacon crews along the line sleep easier.

One More Hour

Right away7
Sixty years old and hollow-eyed from sleeplessness, Commander Brask climbs aboard your deck holding his uniform hat in his hands.

"Forty of my sailors—including my own daughter—are still aboard that Hollow tender's mothership. She arrives at this buoy within the hour to collect her final payment: four more darkened beacons. I have no intention of paying. Once the last of my people climbs aboard the Vigilance, help me sink that Hollow mothership—and I swear on my honor I will walk into your brig voluntarily."
  • Wait until the last captive is aboard, then fight alongside Brask to destroy the Hollow mothership.
Looming out of the gray fog like a pale cliff face, the Hollow mothership closes on the buoy behind her tender. The instant the last dazed sailor climbs onto the Vigilance's deck, Brask's frigate opens fire alongside you.

Forty Names

Right away8
The gray fog has retreated. Across on the Vigilance's deck, forty rescued sailors sit wrapped in blankets, slowly remembering their own names—including a young first officer with Brask's jawline who cradles a hot mug in both hands.

Keeping his word, Commander Brask rows back to your ship and holds out his wrists for your irons. "I made a promise, Captain. The beacon crews who died in my blackouts had daughters too." Down the lane, the Crown Provost Marshal's transport is approaching to take custody.
  • Lock the irons on Brask's wrists and hand him over to the Provost Marshal as posted.
Brask walks up the transport's gangway with his head held high. Counting out your full bounty, the Provost Marshal glances across at the forty rescued sailors on the Vigilance. "They will be called to testify at his trial as well," he admits quietly.
