The Wrong Man

At a port1
Dock at the haven that buried an innocent man and pick up Captain Stroud's trail.
A fresh grave sits on the windward side of the haven, and the widow Corra Dray still keeps the document that put her husband in it. She spreads the warrant across her table: heavy official parchment, neat calligraphy, a genuine court seal pressed in red wax, and the name of a quiet net-mender who never left this rock in his entire life. "Stroud showed this warrant to the guards, and they stood aside while he killed my husband. He collected the bounty at the next haven down the line—and then had the nerve to come back and tip the gravedigger."
  • Borrow the warrant and sail to the next haven to ask who paid Stroud's bounty.
She wraps the warrant carefully in oilcloth for you. "Bring it back when you're done—it's the only document I own with my husband's name spelled right."
  • [Quartermaster] Have crewmate examine the red wax court seal on the warrant.
    Crew: Quartermaster
crewmate warms the wax and lifts the seal intact from the page. "This isn't a forgery. It was stamped by a genuine Articles court seal block—meaning someone sitting on the court itself is issuing these warrants." Corra goes dead still. crewmate keeps the wax impression as evidence, and the widow insists on giving you a jar of her late husband's savings.

  • Have the haven guard post a bait bounty for a fictional deserter and wait for Stroud's hunters to show up.
The guard captain likes the trap. By nightfall, a fresh notice hangs on the board for a deserter who doesn't exist—last spotted aboard a small merchant hull that looks suspiciously like your ship with her gun ports closed.

Your Own Name

Right away2
At the next haven's payout office, the clerk remembers Captain Stroud well: polite, immaculate, and always in a hurry. He also remembers the warrant—because another one arrived by the exact same courier yesterday with the bounty fee already deposited in advance. He spins the new warrant around on the counter. It names your ship for smuggling, flying false colors, and murdering a crewman in a brawl—every word a lie, yet stamped with an official court seal. Just outside the harbor, a bounty hunter you've never met is already shortening sail to intercept you.
  • Sail out of the harbor and fight Stroud's hired hunter.
The ship waiting outside is one of Stroud's subcontracted hunters—carrying a fresh copy of your false warrant nailed to her mast.

The Deserter Who Was Not

Right away3
For two days nothing bites. On the third morning, two ships sail in from the east flying Stroud's blue pennant—a subcontracted bounty hunter and her armed escort. They carry a freshly stamped warrant for the fictional deserter you invented in a tavern four nights ago. The parchment is only three days old, and the wax seal is completely genuine: someone sitting on the Articles court is stamping murder warrants to order.
  • Drop your disguised gun ports and engage both bounty ships.
The lead hunter pulls right alongside before realizing you are armed, while her escort ship scrambles to bring her guns to bear.

  • [Marine] Hide crewmate and a boarding party beneath the deck tarpaulins to ambush the lead ship.
    Crew: Marine
As the first bounty ship grapples your rail, crewmate bursts out from beneath the cargo bales with six marines—cutting down half her deck crew before her escort vessel even realizes it's a trap.

The Hired Hunter

Right away4
The captured captain, Dagny Holt, is sick of working for Stroud. "He pays by the head and asks no questions, so I didn't ask any either. The warrants arrive by courier, already sealed by a powerful friend of his in high places whose name I never learned." She sets her account book on your table. "Between jobs, Stroud anchors at a dismasted counting hulk with his flagship and an escort vessel. I can mark its location on your chart—or row out in a skiff and invite him to parley. He loves to talk."
  • Have Holt mark the counting hulk on your chart and release her ashore.
Holt marks Stroud's anchorage and patrol lanes on your chart, then asks to be put ashore before the shooting starts.
    Reveal 2 waypoints
  • Send Holt in a skiff to invite Captain Stroud to a parley under truce.
Holt rows out in your skiff. Within the day, Stroud sends back a polite reply on fine stationery proposing a truce meeting: a neutral rock, a set hour, one ship each, with all guns housed.

The Counting Hulk

Sail to The Counting Hulk (2–4 passages away)5
Track Captain Stroud to the dismasted counting hulk where he anchors between jobs.
The counting hulk is an old dismasted Guild tally ship chained to a sea-stack. Moored right beside her is Stroud's immaculate white flagship, the Just Reward, shadowed by an armed escort ship. Warm lamplight glows through the hulk's stern cabin windows where Stroud keeps his records, and their lookouts haven't spotted you yet.
  • Launch a surprise attack on Stroud's ships at their moorings.
The escort ship slips her cable first and charges out to buy time while Stroud's flagship, the Just Reward, calmly unfurls her sails behind her.

  • Leave it for now.
You hold position in the cloud bank while the lamp in the hulk's stern cabin burns late into the night.

Guns Housed

Right away6
Fifty years old, immaculately dressed, and smelling faintly of soap, Captain Emeric Stroud sets up a folding table and two chairs on the neutral rock. "Captain, you have already cost me a subcontracted ship, so I take you quite seriously. I can burn the warrant bearing your name right here and pay you handsomely to sail north. Or I can give you a far bigger prize than myself: the name of the Articles court judge who stamps my warrants. I merely collect the heads—she is the one who chooses who dies."
  • Accept Stroud's bribe, watch him burn your warrant, and sail away.
Stroud burns your warrant in a porcelain saucer, counts out neat stacks of silver, and folds up his table—leaving him free to fill another innocent grave at the next haven down the line.

  • Trade Stroud his freedom in exchange for the corrupt judge's name.
Stroud writes the name neatly on a slip of fine paper and blots it dry: "Judge Odile Farrant, Third Chair of the Articles Court. Her ship is the Fair Hearing." Folding his table under his arm, he tips his hat. "You won't see me again, Captain. I know when a business venture has run its course."
  • Break the truce on the spot and arrest Stroud right here.
You kick the folding table over as Stroud reaches for his coat pistol. Out over the water, both ships run out their cannons simultaneously—though breaking a parley flag will cost you respect across the free havens.

Stroud in Irons

Right away7
Sitting in your brig with his coat neatly folded beside him, Stroud adjusts his wrist irons. "Off to the Articles court, I presume? I should mention that a close friend of mine sits as a judge on that very bench—and prisoners have been known to slip out of haven jails." He lets the threat hang in the air. "Of course, if you took me back to the widow Corra Dray's haven, they would hang me tonight. It all depends on whether you want the official bounty fee, Captain, or actual justice."
  • Deliver Stroud alive to the Articles court to claim the posted bounty.
Stroud inclines his head politely, like a gentleman whose dinner reservation has just been confirmed.
  • [Marine] Have crewmate interrogate Stroud until he names his accomplice on the court bench.
    Crew: Marine
crewmate doesn't lay a finger on him. Instead, crewmate sits opposite the cell bars and reads the names of his nine murdered victims aloud from his ledger, over and over. On the fourth reading, Stroud cracks: "Judge Odile Farrant, Third Chair." With her name in hand, you set course for the court.
  • Deliver Stroud to the widow Corra Dray's haven for frontier justice instead.
For the first time since you met him, Captain Stroud has nothing to say.

Forty Names

Right away8
The stern cabin is a bureaucrat's paradise: neatly ruled account books, a copying press, and a column of forty names with a bounty fee recorded beside each. Nine of the names are marked with a small cross—innocent victims who were never posted on any bounty board. Tucked behind the press sits a genuine Articles court seal block with its judge's name carved into the handle. Through the stern window, you spot a skiff rowing over from the Just Reward: Stroud has seen your lantern.
  • Wait inside the cabin with the incriminating account book open on his table.
Stroud steps into the cabin alone, removes his hat, and glances from the open account book to your face. "Ah," he murmurs—then dives back out the stern window with surprising speed for a fastidious man, reaching the Just Reward as she casts off for battle.

  • Seize the account books, the court seal block, and his strongbox, then slip away before he boards.
You slip out through the hulk's bow port just as Stroud's skiff bumps against the stern. You send the incriminating records and seal block to the Articles court by honest courier—and keep the strongbox's silver for yourself, leaving Stroud to be hunted down by the court's own marshals.

The Third Chair

Right away9
Anchored off the court rock beside an armed escort rests the Fair Hearing, where Judge Odile Farrant is strolling her quarterdeck. All you hold is a slip of paper written by a fugitive bounty hunter, without Stroud himself to testify. If you challenge a sitting Articles judge to trial by combat, you had better win—because the court will believe whichever captain sails back to the pier.
  • Hoist the challenge signal and call Judge Farrant out to fight before the harbor.
You hoist the ancient accusation pennant—captain challenging captain—bringing every ship outside the harbor to a halt to watch. After a long pause, Judge Farrant orders her escort vessel to attack ahead of her flagship.

  • Present Stroud's note and the lifted wax seal from Corra Dray's warrant to the court clerk.
The chief clerk matches the wax impression from the murder warrant directly to Judge Farrant's official seal block. Arrested on the courthouse steps without a shot fired, Farrant forfeits her purse to pay your reward, the bench quietly hands you her master forgery kit, and the widow Dray receives her husband's cleared warrant back.

  • Blackmail Judge Farrant by selling Stroud's incriminating note back to her in private.

Three Chairs

At a port10
Deliver Captain Stroud alive to the Articles court.
Three senior captains sit in judgment beneath the Articles banner. As Stroud bows to the bench, the stern woman occupying the Third Chair carefully avoids looking at him. The presiding judge reads the warrant aloud: "Delivered alive as posted. The court pays your bounty and will try the prisoner in due course." Stroud catches your eye with a faint smirk—knowing 'due course' leaves plenty of time for an accomplice to unlock his cell.
  • Take the pay.
The court clerk counts out your silver and leads Stroud toward the haven jail—where his friend on the bench will doubtless arrange a quiet escape before the new moon.

  • Expose Judge Odile Farrant in open court as the accomplice who stamped Stroud's false warrants.
You announce before the entire hall that the Third Chair stamped Stroud's murder warrants. Before Farrant can object, the clerk compares her official seal block to Stroud's documents and confirms the match. Bolting out a side door, Odile Farrant races for her warship as she cuts her mooring lines.

The Windward Side

At a port11
Deliver Captain Stroud to the haven where he murdered Corra Dray's husband.
The entire haven gathers silently on the pier as you bring Stroud ashore. Standing at the front with the false warrant in her hand, the widow Corra Dray watches Stroud stare down at his boots. The guard captain speaks to you in a low voice: "We can hang him ourselves tonight beside her husband's grave. Or you can hold him aboard your ship under guard for three days until an Articles judge arrives to make the execution legal—though Stroud's allies will surely hear and come to rescue him before then."
  • Hand Stroud over to the haven townsfolk to hang tonight.
Stroud is hanged at dusk beside the windward grave, and Corra Dray burns the false warrant over the ashes. Though the poor haven has little silver, the townsfolk carry the ancient oak feast-table from their hall aboard your ship as a gift of honor.

  • Hold Stroud under guard aboard your ship for three days so he can be tried and executed legally under the Articles.
