The Signal Rock

Sail to The Signal Rock (1–3 passages away)1
Investigate the signal rock where the ghost-crewed Merrigale last answered a friendly hail.
A Free Muster picket sloop lies shattered against the rock, her signal mast still flying the 'friend in sight' pennant. The Merrigale answered the recognition signals perfectly, flag for flag—and then opened fire at point-blank range.

Wedged beneath the wrecked helm clutching a canvas sea bag is a single survivor with a broken arm. "I'm Bevan Cray," he gasps. "I served as the Merrigale's first mate for nine years before she vanished into the Hush. I volunteered for this picket post just to watch for her return."
  • Bring Bevan Cray aboard and ask him about the Merrigale's patrol pattern.
After drinking a pint of water, Cray sketches her route across your chart table. "She's still sailing her old patrol beat, down to the exact hour, and she still answers watch bells. Worse, she isn't sailing alone: a pale Hollow vessel shadows her a mile astern like a gull following a trawler."

  • Bring Cray aboard and salvage the wrecked sloop's ammunition lockers before dark.
The sloop's ammunition lockers are dry and fully stocked. Helping carry bolt cases with his one good arm, Cray avoids looking back at the shattered helm. "She's still sailing her old patrol route," he tells you. "I can show you where to intercept her."

  • [Surgeon] Have crewmate splint Cray's broken arm before questioning him.
    Crew: Surgeon
crewmate sets and splints the fracture right on the wreck's hatch cover without Cray uttering a single groan. Grateful, the veteran mate maps out every turn and hourly waypoint of the Merrigale's old patrol route from memory.

Two Posters

Right away2
A Crown naval cutter that has been observing the wreck pulls alongside, and Lieutenant Lazlo Pym steps aboard carrying a leather case.

"The crew's families posted a bounty to sink the Merrigale," Pym says briskly, "but Crown Naval Intelligence will pay far more to capture her intact with her Hush-bound crew still breathing. Our Academy savants want to study how the gray fog keeps enthralled sailors manning their stations. We pay an advance upon signing and a bonus upon delivery." Beside you, Cray goes pale. "Captain, she still responds to her watch bell! Let me try waking them with the bell first."
  • Inspect the capture gear in Lieutenant Pym's leather case.
Pym unlatches his leather case on your chart table while Cray walks stiffly to the rail in silent protest.
  • Hear out Bevan Cray's plan to wake the crew with the ship's bell.
Pym snaps his case shut. "You know where to find my cutter when sentiment fails, Captain." He returns to his vessel, which shadows you astern.
  • Reject both schemes and set out to sink the Merrigale cleanly as the families asked.
Lieutenant Pym bows and returns to his cutter. After an hour of heavy silence, Cray steps up to your helm and quietly gives you the Merrigale's patrol waypoints, turn by turn.

The Lieutenant's Case

Right away3
Inside Pym's leather case rests an arm-length barbed harpoon head attached to a coil of gray grounding wire. "Fire this into her Drive housing to cripple her propulsion without sinking the hull." Beneath the harpoon lie forty hoods made of lead-lined glass, folded like napkins.

"The hoods are for the enthralled crew," Pym explains matter-of-factly. "They are useless to the Academy if they wake up—once awake, they remember what they've done and try to kill themselves." He holds out an advance purse awaiting your signature.
  • Sign Pym's contract, take the advance silver, and mount the grounding harpoon on your bow gun.
Pym counts the advance silver onto your table while his armorer fits the barbed grounding harpoon into your bow chaser. "Hull intact, crew breathing. Signal my cutter once she's immobilized."

  • Refuse Pym's ghoulish contract and go speak with Cray at the rail.
Pym closes the case unhurriedly. "My offer stands until she's at the bottom of the sky, Captain." Across the deck, Cray is untying his canvas sea bag with his one good hand.

The Second Bell

Right away4
Using his good hand, Cray pulls a sweater-wrapped bronze bell the size of a bread loaf from his sea bag—its rim hand-carved with the name Merrigale.

"Every Muster ship carries two bells: the main watch bell, and this smaller one for the mess deck. Captain Thessaly Greer rang the watch changes herself for nine years. If she hears her own bell rung in the proper cadence at the change of the watch, I truly believe some part of her mind will wake up and come on deck."
  • Mount the Merrigale's bell beside your helm.
Cray bolts the bronze bell beside your wheel, then sets a leather pouch of silver on the binnacle. "That's my share from her last voyage before the fog took her. I was saving it for her headstone—spend it on ward-lamp spirit instead."

  • [Rigger] Have crewmate hoist the bell high on the main yard so its chime carries across the sky.
    Crew: Rigger
crewmate rigs the bronze bell high on the main yardarm with tarred line, where its clear chime rings out across the clouds like a beacon. Listening with eyes closed, Cray leaves his pouch of saved silver on the binnacle to buy lamp fuel.

  • Decline to hang the bell—you are here to sink the ship and put her crew to rest.
Cray wraps the bronze bell back up in his sweater. "Then sink her cleanly in a fair broadside," he asks quietly. "Don't shoot her in the back."

Muster Red

Sail to The Merrigale's Beat (1–3 passages away)5
Lie in wait along the Merrigale's old patrol route.
Right on the hour Cray predicted, the Merrigale sails up her old patrol lane—a Free Muster brig flying red colors with her sails trimmed for inspection and her signal mast hoisting 'friend in sight.' Not a single sailor is visible along her rail, and a mile astern, a pale Hollow vessel shadows her wake without any flag at all.

Gripping your rail with his good hand, Cray whispers, "That's Captain Greer at the wheel—I'd know the way she holds a course anywhere."
  • Return her friendly signal, then open fire to sink her.
The Merrigale unleashes a broadside in the exact same heartbeat, while the pale Hollow vessel astern unfurls full sail to join the fight.

  • Fire Lieutenant Pym's grounding harpoon into the Merrigale's Drive housing.
The barbed harpoon punches deep under her stern quarter and the grounding wire hums taut, crippling her propulsion—though her enthralled gun crews still return fire as the Hollow ship astern charges in.

  • Ring the Merrigale's bronze watch bell across the water.
  • Leave it for now.
You let the ghost-crewed brig sail past along her patrol route, knowing she will return at the exact same hour tomorrow.

At Their Stations

Right away6
Boarding the crippled Merrigale, your crew find every single sailor standing motionless at their battle stations. No one resists or even looks up: a gunner mechanically sponges out a cannon that has already been blasted off its carriage, while at the wheel, Captain Thessaly Greer quietly repeats the order to come about over and over.

When Bevan Cray steps right in front of her, she stares straight through him.
  • Lead her enthralled crew safely onto your ship and scuttle the Merrigale as posted.
Docile as exhausted children, the enthralled sailors let your crew lead them aboard before you scuttle the Merrigale with her red banner flying. Back at the beacon line, the grieving families pay your bounty in full—though few can bear to look into the blank eyes of the loved ones you brought home.

  • Signal Lieutenant Pym's naval cutter to come take custody of the ship and crew.
Having shadowed you just over the horizon all day, Pym's cutter answers your signal flare immediately.
  • Give Bevan Cray an hour to try waking them with the mess bell before deciding.
Pulling the bronze bell from his sea bag with his good hand, Cray stands beside Captain Greer's wheel and watches the ship's hourglass until the exact change of the watch.

Forty Hoods

Right away7
Lieutenant Pym boards the Merrigale with a squad of Crown marines carrying the forty lead-glass hoods, gently slipping them over the heads of the unresisting sailors one by one.

"The Academy thanks you for this priceless specimen, Captain," Pym says, offering you a purse even heavier than the promised payout. But when he steps toward the wheel with the final hood, Bevan Cray blocks his path with the bronze bell raised in his hand.
  • Take Pym's silver and pull Cray out of the way.
Cray does not fight your crew as you pull him back. The Merrigale is towed away toward the Crown Peak with her forty hooded sailors sitting in silent rows on deck—leaving the families' bounty unclaimed and their loved ones gone forever.

Eight Bells

Right away8
Cray strikes eight bells in the exact cadence Captain Greer used for nine years. At the wheel, the broad-shouldered woman freezes, and her hand rises slowly to her face.

"Mr. Cray... you're late for the watch," she whispers—before seeing the state of her deck and dropping to her knees. Around her, half her crew are waking from the Hush's grip. Sitting on her scarred deck planking, Thessaly Greer counts her surviving sailors twice. "I remember everything we did while the fog had us, Captain. What does your bounty poster demand?"
  • Scuttle the empty Merrigale to satisfy the bounty and bring Captain Greer and her awakened crew home to their families.
Captain Greer opens her own ship's sea-cocks with her bare hands, watching the empty Merrigale settle into the clouds with her red banner flying. Back on the pier, the families count out your bounty to the last coin—and then drop the silver in shock as their living sons and daughters walk up the dock steps behind you.

  • Scuttle the empty Merrigale for the bounty and invite first mate Bevan Cray to join your crew.
The empty Merrigale goes down with her colors flying, and the families pay your bounty on the pier as Captain Greer leads her survivors ashore. Watching her go, Cray turns back to you: "She doesn't need a first mate on dry land, Captain—do you have room for a veteran rigger?"

  • Forgo the bounty and let Captain Greer keep the Merrigale to hunt the Hush ships that enthralled her.
Rising to her feet, Captain Greer swears to ring wake-bells for the other lost ships still trapped in the Hush. In gratitude, her crew transfer the Merrigale's master-wound capstan springs into your gun deck—holding your cannons at full draw—before Greer and Cray sail back into the gray fog together.
