The Fog Quay

Sail to The Fog Quay (2–4 passages away)1
Locate the hidden dock inside the dense fog bank.
The fog is so thick your lookout has to call distance by echo. Out of the mist looms a hidden six-berth dock lit by a single hooded lamp, where a gnome feeds mana crystal into a brass boiler that belches clouds of artificial fog. Waiting behind her with their bundles are three Lowborn refugee families.
  • Ask the gnome who the families are waiting for.
"Any ship willing to smuggle them out," the gnome says—just before a heavy lead weight knocks twice against the stone dock from above.
  • Slip back out of the fog and sell the hidden dock's coordinates to the Excise patrol.
You find an Excise patrol cutter just above the fog bank, probing the clouds with a sounding line. Her lieutenant pays you forty silver for the coordinates—and logs your name in his report.

  • [Lowborn] Have crewmate speak with the refugee families first.
    Crew: Lowborn
Seeing that crewmate is Lowborn too, one of the fathers trusts you enough to trace the local Excise patrol lanes on the wet dock stones—just before a heavy lead weight knocks twice against the stone from above.

  • Leave it for now.
You reverse course, and the hidden dock vanishes into the white mist within seconds.

The Excise Sounding Line

Right away2
Get the Lowborn refugee families past the Excise patrol cutter.
The knocking is a heavy lead weight on a sounding line, lowered from an Excise patrol cutter hovering right above the fog bank. The gnome grips the valve on her fog boiler.

"I can pump out thicker fog, but they'll still hear a ship's engines if they're close," she warns. "Either take these three families aboard tonight, or the Excise will find this dock by morning."
  • Bring the three families aboard and slip out quietly beneath the cutter.
The families board in silence. You muffle your tackle and glide out through the mist as the cutter's lead weight swings past your stern.

  • [Gnome] Have crewmate modify the boiler valve to flood the sky with fog before loading the families.
    Crew: Gnome
crewmate widens the valve seat until the boiler roars, blanketing the entire sky in dense fog that blinds the Excise cutter while you load the families safely aboard.

The Lieutenant's Offer

Right away3
Even with your coordinates, the Excise cutter has missed the hidden dock twice in the blinding mist. "Guide us right up to the pier," the lieutenant offers. "We'll pay you a pilot's bonus plus a share of whatever contraband we seize."
  • Guide the Excise cutter down to raid the hidden dock.
You hang a stern lantern over your taffrail and lead the Excise cutter slowly down into the fog bank.
  • Refuse to guide him, then slip back down into the fog to warn the refugees.
Leaving the lieutenant to fumble with his sounding line, you dive back into the fog bank by echo and dock at the pier to warn the families.

The Grandmother's Gift

At the delivery port4
Deliver the refugee families to a safe port.
As soon as you dock, the refugee families hurry ashore into the lower streets. Only an elderly grandmother lingers on your gangplank, holding a spare brass Fog Kettle under her shawl and a pouch of coins collected by the families.

"The dock-keeper told me to offer you either the kettle or the coin," she says. "After what you did for us, I say take both."
  • Accept both the Fog Kettle device and the forty-five silver.
You take the brass Fog Kettle—which generates a protective fog bank in combat—along with the forty-five silver the families collected.

Safe for the Season

Right away5
With the patrol cutter driven off, the hidden dock is safe. The gnome pulls a spare fog boiler from under a tarp.

"The three families still need transport to port," she says. "I can give you this spare Fog Kettle now, or I can pay their passage with you—I can't afford both, because their fare buys the crystal that keeps this dock hidden."
  • Take the Fog Kettle device for your ship and leave the families for the next vessel.
You take the brass Fog Kettle—which boils mana crystal into a protective fog bank during battle—and leave the families to wait for the next smuggler.

  • Leave her the kettle and transport the three families to safety.
The three families come aboard in safety, bringing along three extra crates of bread and dried fish for your galley.

Two Ships in the Mist

Right away6
Lead the Excise cutter to the hidden dock in the fog.
Spotting two hulls descending through the mist instead of one, the gnome throws her fog boiler wide open, swallowing the pier in white vapor as the families scramble to grab their children.

The Excise lieutenant curses from the cutter behind you: "You found the pier once! Put us alongside it!"
  • Bring the Excise cutter right alongside the pier to complete the raid.
The Excise marines march the Lowborn families aboard the cutter in chains. The lieutenant pays you fifty silver and hands over the confiscated Fog Kettle as your share of the seizure.
