The Cinder-Watcher

At the delivery port1
Deliver the cinder-watcher to her destination port.
Your passenger is an emberkin weather-watcher carrying a chalked slate of ash and wind readings. On the dock, she reads a dispatch and freezes.

"The Cinder Watch station in the next region hasn't sent a weather report in a month," she says. "That station tracks the fire-winds for the entire sector. Someone has to go check on it, and I don't have a ship."
  • Offer to fly her to the silent watch-station.
She chalks the station's bearing directly onto your navigation chart.
  • [Emberkin] Have crewmate ask what else is at the watch-station.
    Crew: Emberkin
"The station master was my mentor," she confides to crewmate. "He kept a fireproof salamander hide hanging above the hearth. If it's still there, the station—or a ship—can be shielded from any fire." She marks the station and the safest approach lanes on your chart.

The Guild's Offer

Right away2
Before you cast off, she turns the dispatch letter over. On the back, the Guild weather office has posted a bounty for any ship willing to hold position inside the local ember wind for a full day so she can record ash readings from deck.

"Taking those readings here would keep the local trade lanes open for a month," she says, "or we can head straight to the silent watch-station in the next region."
  • Skip the local readings and fly her straight to the watch-station in the next region.
She pays you twenty silver in advance and sets her slate beside your galley fire for the voyage.

  • Hold position in the local ember wind first so she can record the Guild's readings.
She marks the nearby ember-wind lane on your chart. "Wet down your sails before we go in—and keep your crew ready with fire buckets."

The Silent Watch-Station

Sail to The Cinder Watch in the next region3
Locate the silent Cinder Watch station in the next region.
The stone watch-station sits atop a black volcanic ridge while hot winds whip cinders across the slope. Its signal flags hang in scorched tatters, the heavy door is barred from the inside, and a flock of gloomwings roosts thickly across the roof.
  • Land below the ridge and send a party in on foot.
    Landfall: The Cinder Watch
  • Attack the gloomwing flock on the roof with your ship's guns before landing.
Disturbed by your approach, the flock of gloomwings launches off the roof into the swirling ember wind to attack your ship!

The Ember Lane

Sail to The Ember Lane (1–3 passages away)4
Hold your ship inside the ember wind while the cinder-watcher records her readings.
Hot ember winds blast off the burning mountain slopes like a furnace. While the watcher stands at your rail recording spark counts on her slate, glowing cinders land in your furled sails and ignite small deck fires. You must hold the your ship steady in the wind until her count is finished.
  • Hold position in the ember wind and have the crew fight the deck fires with buckets.
  • [Deluge Tanks] Run your Deluge Tanks to keep the decks and sails soaked the entire day.
    Room: Deluge Tanks
Your Deluge Tanks pump water across the decks all day long. Every falling cinder hisses out harmlessly on the wet planks while she finishes her readings in safety.
  • [Fire mage] Have crewmate draw the heat out of the falling cinders before they touch the rigging.
    Crew: Fire caster · Mage
crewmate stands amidships and drains the heat from every ember before it hits the deck, turning live sparks into cold ash and honing crewmate's spellcasting.

The Salamander Hide

Right away5
Search the inside of the Cinder Watch station.
Inside the station, a massive dull-red salamander hide hangs above the hearth, extinguishing every stray cinder that drifts near it. On the table lies the late station master's logbook, updated faithfully until the day he died. Your passenger closes the book gently.
  • Ask to take the fireproof Salamander Hide for your ship.
"My mentor would want it protecting a working ship," she says. Hung between your decks, the Salamander Hide smothers fires before they can spread.
    The questline ends here.
  • Leave the Salamander Hide to protect the station and take a cash reward instead.
She hoists fresh signal flags to reopen the station and pays you sixty-five silver from the strongbox's uncollected wages.

Readings Complete

Right away6
Her slate is covered on both sides with fresh measurements. "The ember winds are worse than last year and shifting north. Once the Guild posts these readings, ships can route around the danger."

A Guild weather cutter pulls alongside to collect the slate, while the watcher glances anxiously toward the next region where her mentor's silent watch-station sits.
  • Collect the Guild's seventy-silver fee and let her return to port on the cutter.
The cutter's purser pays you seventy silver for the day's work and your scorched paint, and the watcher transfers aboard the Guild vessel.
