The Keeper of the Pass

Sail to The Gale That Never Drops (2–5 passages away)1
Find the mountain pass blocked by the nine-year gale and the storm-caller holding it.
A roaring wall of wind blocks the mountain pass. Behind it, in a pocket of calm air, stand a dozen village huts and an exhausted woman sitting on a wooden stool: Maren Oake, a wild storm-caller whose magic is slowly burning through her own body.

"For nine years I've held this gale to keep the Crown's mage-hunters out," she says. "My strength is spent—I cannot hold it through another winter."
  • Ask how you can help her restore her strength.
"Nine years ago I raised a massive storm over the Sill, in the next region, and left half my power bound inside it," she explains. "Carry me there so I can reclaim my storm, and I'll have the strength to shield this pass again."
  • [Wild caster] Have crewmate sit and meditate with her.
    Crew: Wild caster
crewmate sits beside her in the calm eye of the pass, learning how she channels the wind without fighting it. Rested a little, she asks for passage to the Sill in the next region to reclaim a storm she left burning there.
    +1 Control
  • Leave the pass and sell her location to the Undertow syndicate.
A wild storm-caller who can command the weather is worth a fortune to the Undertow engineers building the Cistern. You set course for a port where their recruiter operates.
  • Leave it for now.
You pull back out of the pass as the roaring gale seals the gap behind you.

The Villagers' Purse

Right away2
Take Maren Oake aboard and depart the mountain pass.
As Maren rises from her stool, the nine-year gale falters and drops. The villagers gather at your gangway, and an elder holds out a leather pouch of small coins—nine years of savings from a dozen poor households. "For her passage, Captain. We know what it costs to run a ship."
  • Accept the villagers' 35 silver fare.
The pouch holds thirty-five silver in worn coins. Maren says nothing, looking back once at the huts as your ship clears the pass.
    +35 silver
  • Refuse their savings—the villagers need the coin more than you do.
The elder slowly tucks the pouch away in gratitude. Maren watches quietly, and word of your generosity spreads quickly through the Free Reaches.

The Undertow Recruiter

At a port3
Find the Undertow recruiter at port and sell the storm-caller's location.
The Undertow recruiter hastily covers a blueprint of the Cistern as you approach her tavern table. She listens eagerly to your account of Maren Oake. "We won't try dragging a storm-caller in by force—instead, we'll capture the storm she left over the Sill so she has to come to us. What do you want for helping our bottlers harvest her tempest?"
  • Demand silver.
She pays you fifty silver up front. "You'll get the rest once our crew bottles her storm over the Sill in the next region."

  • Ask for one of her bottled storms up front.
She slides a swirling leadglass storm bottle across the table. "One of Maren's old bottles. Escort my bottlers to the Sill in the next region to fill twelve more, and we'll pay you the balance in silver."

The Storm Over the Sill

Sail to The Storm over the Sill in the next region4
Carry Maren Oake to the storm burning over the Sill in the next region.
Maren's old storm still rages over the Sill ridge, glowing emerald-green at its core. Circling its outer edge is an armed Crown weather cutter with brass measuring booms rigged out. Spotting your approach, the cutter's captain hails you: "We've waited months for the storm-caller to come back for this tempest! Hand her over alive and collect the Crown's bounty!"
  • Fight the Crown cutter inside the thunderstorm.
Maren closes her eyes as lightning crashes down around both ships.

Harvesting the Storm

Sail to The Storm over the Sill in the next region5
Escort the Undertow's bottlers to the storm over the Sill in the next region.
At the Sill, the two Undertow specialists extend long poles tipped with leadglass bottles into the green heart of the storm. Suddenly, a patrolling Crown weather cutter rounds the cloud bank and hails you: "This tempest is under royal survey! Haul those poles in immediately!"
  • Attack the Crown weather cutter to protect the bottlers.
Thunder crashes around both hulls as you engage the Crown cutter while the bottlers keep working.

The Green Eye

Right away6
Hold your ship steady inside the eye of the storm.
Inside the emerald eye of the storm, the air hums with raw power. "Hold the ship dead still while I draw the tempest back into myself," Maren calls out. Walnut-sized hailstones—each formed around a shard of pure crystal—hammer your deck as fierce crosswinds try to shove your hull out of the eye.
  • Brace the helm and weather the hailstorm.
Your hull takes a beating from the hail and a yardarm cracks under the strain, but your crew sweep up four crates of raw storm-crystal from the scuppers while Maren finishes her work.

The Crown's Bounty

Right away7
Collect your bounty from the Crown weather cutter's captain.
Two Crown marines escort Maren below decks in irons. Pleased with the capture, the cutter's captain turns to you. "The Crown pays well for rogue storm-callers. Take a hundred and ten silver, or take forty silver and my spare masthead weathervane."
  • Take the silver.

A Storm in Twelve Bottles

Right away8
Decide what to do with the twelve bottles of Maren's storm.
Twelve glowing leadglass bottles stand racked on your deck, and the sky over the Sill is now completely bare. "Maren will feel her storm vanish from fifty miles away," the senior bottler remarks. "She'll have no choice but to come work for the Cistern to get it back." He holds out your final silver payout.

Strength Reclaimed

Right away9
Claim your reward from Maren Oake.
