Out of Hiding

At the delivery port1
Land the smuggled family unseen at port.
A Free Captains intelligence agent helps the two children onto the pier first, while their mother, Kessa Arden, pauses at your rail. "My husband Renn is the chief gunnery mage aboard the Crown hunter warship Tempest. He designed her Stormcaller Battery—a triple-barreled air cannon that almost never misses. The Crown held us hostage to force him to serve. Now that we're free, he'll defect—and bring his Stormcaller Battery with him—if a ship meets him at his patrol station."
  • Agree to rendezvous with the warship Tempest and extract her husband.
The agent marks the Tempest's patrol station in the next region and gives you the recognition signal: two green lanterns flashed in a gale.
  • Secretly note the haven's location to sell to a Crown envoy.
You say nothing on the pier, knowing a Crown envoy will pay handsomely for the haven where Kessa and her children are hiding.
  • Take your delivery pay and leave.
The agent pays your twenty-silver smuggling fee as Kessa Arden leads her children up the pier.

A Gunner's Wife

Right away2
Speak with Kessa Arden before sailing for the Tempest's station.
While the agent takes the children up the dock, Kessa lingers at your rail. "I lived aboard the Tempest for eleven years—I know her gun deck better than her own officers do. And Renn won't trust a strange ship on a lantern signal alone. Before I go, I can either sketch the Tempest's blind spots for you, or give you a personal token so Renn knows I'm safe."
  • Have her sketch the Tempest's gun deck and blind spots.
Tracing in spilled flour on your hatch cover, she maps the Tempest's gunports and marks the stern quarter where her lookouts are blind in a gale.
  • Ask for a personal token to prove to Renn that his family is safe.
She slips a dented brass thimble off her finger, engraved inside with his initials. "He made this for me when we had nothing—show it to him and he'll trust you with his life."
  • Skip both and demand a 40 silver advance from the Free Captains' agent.
Grumbling, the agent counts out forty silver on the pier as an advance against the extraction.

The Haven's Secret

Right away3
Decide whether to betray the family's haven to the Crown.
As the agent leads Kessa and her children up the stone steps, the youngest child turns and waves back at your ship. No one on the pier is watching you: you can record the haven's coordinates to sell to the Crown, or tear out the page and go rescue her father as promised.
  • Record the haven's coordinates in your logbook and sail for a Crown port.
You pocket your twenty-silver delivery pay, write down the haven's location, and set course for a Crown envoy.
    +20 silver
  • Wave back to the child, tear out the page, and go extract her father from the Tempest.
You rip the page from your logbook and hurry down the pier to get the Tempest's coordinates and signal code from the agent.

Two Green Lanterns

Sail to The Tempest's Station in the next region4
Rendezvous with the Crown warship Tempest in the next region and extract her gunnery mage.
The massive Crown hunter warship Tempest rides out a howling gale under storm canvas. Two green signal lanterns flash briefly from her gun deck, then go dark. No small boat can survive this wind: you must either cripple the warship in battle, or pull Renn Arden and his cannon barrels straight off her gun deck.
  • Attack the warship Tempest head-on in the gale.
Her first broadside roars past in the gale as you close in to engage.

The Crown Envoy

At a port5
Meet the Crown envoy at port and sell the location of the gunner's family.
The Crown envoy listens with polite detachment. "An artificer who builds weapons like the Stormcaller Battery cannot be allowed to defect to rebels—holding his family was a simple necessity of state. Tell me which haven is hiding them, and the Crown will reward you handsomely."
  • Give her the haven's coordinates for a 40 silver advance.
She records the coordinates and pays you forty silver up front while her clerks prepare the final settlement.

  • Claim you were mistaken and refuse to betray the family.
She caps her pen coldly. "People often are." As you return to the pier, you spot a Crown intelligence clerk tailing you toward your ship.

The Stormcaller Battery

Right away6
Decide who gets the completed Stormcaller Battery.
On your deck stands the complete Stormcaller Battery: three air-driven barrels on a single mount, firing devastating three-shot volleys. Renn Arden looks up at you. "The Free Captains' agent expects this weapon delivered—but I made no promises to them. I only wanted my family back. Where do we mount the gun, Captain?"
  • Mount the Stormcaller Battery on your own gun deck.
Renn bolts the Stormcaller Battery onto your gun deck and drills your crew in its operation, though the Free Captains resent losing the prize weapon.

The Tempest in Pursuit

Right away7
Escape the pursuing warship Tempest.
An hour after the extraction, the Tempest spots the theft and swings around in the gale with all battle lanterns blazing! Renn Arden watches from your stern rail beside his dismantled Stormcaller Battery. "She's faster than us in a gale—I designed her trim myself. Without my battery she only has her bow chasers, but she carries forty royal marines and a captain who'll hang if he loses me!"
  • Turn and fight her.
You swing about to fight the pursuing warship—without Renn's main battery, her firepower is crippled!

The Envoy's Bonus

Right away8
Collect the rest of your reward from the Crown envoy.
The envoy dries her freshly signed warrant. "With his family back in custody, Renn Arden will remain loyally at his post on the Tempest. You can take your remaining reward as eighty silver or a full Battery Deck upgrade at the royal dockyard—and if you also give me the name of the Free Captains' agent who met you, I'll double the silver to a hundred and seventy."

Tailed to the Pier

Right away9
Deal with the Crown intelligence clerk following you on the pier.
A Crown clerk in a gray coat is marching straight toward your gangway with the harbor guard in whistling range, determined to seize your ship's logbook and read the three lines where you recorded the haven's location.
  • Tear out and burn the logbook page before letting him search the ship.

The Firing Table

Right away10
Decide what to do now that Renn Arden has lost his cannon barrels.
By dawn the gale subsides. Renn Arden sits on your hatch cover holding his brass firing table—the brain of a battery whose barrels now lie at the bottom of the sky. "It'll take a foundry and a year to cast three new barrels, and the Free Captains won't be happy with an empty mount," he says quietly. "I only wanted to get back to my children."
  • Deliver Renn to his family and collect 70 silver from the agent.
