The Ship's Surgeon

At the delivery port1
Deliver the contraband surgeon's chest.
The buyer is a warship's surgeon named Ilse Varga, whose own fingernails bear the silver tint of Dust exposure. "It's for our ship's fire mage, Joss Hallet," she whispers urgently. "He maintains our warship's battle wards, and he can't channel without Dust anymore. If the crew find out he's using again, the Articles require them to vote him off the ship—leaving us defenseless. Can your ship take him somewhere quiet to detox for a month?"
  • Agree to take the addicted mage aboard and help him detox.
Relieved, she locks the medical chest and hurries back to her warship to fetch him after dark.
  • [Surgeon] Have crewmate examine the mage and advise Ilse on tapering him off safely.
    Crew: Surgeon
crewmate outlines a gradual tapering regimen to ease Dust withdrawal without shock. Grateful, Ilse copies every step into her medical journal and pays you thirty-five silver from her ship's chest before bringing Joss aboard.

  • Board her warship and report the smuggled Dust to her captain.
Leaving Ilse standing frozen by the open chest, you climb the warship's gangway and ask to see her captain.
  • Collect your 15 silver delivery pay and stay out of it.
She counts out fifteen silver without meeting your eyes and hurries away with the chest.

Withdrawal

Right away2
Get the addicted mage Joss Hallet through his first night of withdrawal.
After dark, Ilse brings Joss Hallet aboard wrapped in a blanket, pale and trembling, along with the chest of Dust. "You have a month to get him clean before our warship returns from patrol," she says. By midnight, Joss is shaking so violently his bunk frame rattles, and the cabin lamp flame bends toward him with every ragged breath.
  • Dump the Dust overboard and sit with him through cold-turkey withdrawal.
You heave the Dust over the rail and hold him down through twelve brutal nights of fever and curses, while Ilse leaves twenty-five silver on your table for his passage.
+25 silverNew job: A mage, very ill
  • Use your surgeon's tapering regimen to wean him off the Dust gradually.
Measuring out smaller pinches each day on the galley scales, you bring him through withdrawal cleanly without shock, and Ilse leaves twenty-five silver for his care.
+25 silverNew job: A mage, very ill
  • Send him back to his warship before dawn and report the whole affair to his captain.
Unwilling to risk an unstable fire mage aboard your ship, you have him carried back across before dawn and inform his captain.

Before the Crew

Right away3
Address the warship's crew before they vote on Joss Hallet.
Captain Bram Holloway, a broad-shouldered Ursine, hears your report and rings the assembly bell. Forty sailors gather on the main deck around Joss Hallet and Surgeon Varga. "Under the Free Captains' Articles, the accuser speaks first," Holloway announces. "Tell the crew what you delivered, and for whom."
  • State the simple facts of the delivery and collect 30 silver.
You state the facts plainly in two sentences, and Captain Holloway pays you thirty silver for reporting the contraband.
    +30 silver
  • State the facts, but defend the surgeon for trying to keep the ship's wards running.
You explain that Ilse only bought the Dust to keep their battle wards up through the campaign, leaving half the crew staring guiltily at their boots.

  • [Mage] Have crewmate explain to the sailors what it costs a mage to hold wards on an empty mana pool.
    Crew: Mage
crewmate describes the physical agony of maintaining a warship's wards night after night on an exhausted pool. The sailors listen in respectful silence, and Captain Holloway pays you thirty silver.

One Month Clean

At the delivery port4
Bring the recovering mage Joss Hallet to a quiet port to finish his detox.
By the time you reach the quiet port a month later, Joss's head is clear and he has taken to fixing your galley stove out of boredom. "My old crew will never take me back after missing a patrol," he says, holding up his silver-stained fingers. "How shall I repay you for pulling me through?"
  • Recruit Joss Hallet onto your crew and take his 30 silver fare.

Voted Ashore

Right away5
See the result of the warship's vote.
That night the crew vote by dropping tokens into a bucket. Rules are rules: Joss Hallet is voted off the ship, and Surgeon Varga resigns to go ashore with him. By dawn their warship has sailed without a ward-mage or a surgeon, leaving the two of them sitting on their sea chests at the end of the pier.
  • Leave them to it.
You sail on, and the fleet paymaster sends thirty silver in recognition of your honest testimony.
