Living Timber

Right away1
A battered sloop drifts across the lane with tattered sails—yet every cannon hole in her hull has knitted itself shut like living bark over a wound. Down in the bilge lies an exhausted wild Mender named Wren Calloway, her palms pressed flat against the keel.

"The ship was bleeding to death," Wren whispers, drained nearly to a ghost. "I didn't know flesh-mending magic would work on oak planks—and now I can't let go."
  • Bring Wren aboard your ship so she can rest.
Light as a feather, she marks a hidden Menders' sanctuary on your chart with a trembling hand—and the moment her palms leave the sloop's keel, the old cannon wounds along the wreck's hull begin splitting open!
  • [Wild caster] Have crewmate sit and meditate with her.
    Crew: Wild caster
crewmate teaches her the core discipline of wild magic: how to release a working safely. Helping her let go deepens crewmate's own Control, and Wren marks the Menders' sanctuary on your chart.
    +1 Control
  • Take her to an Undertow port—their engineers pay well for wild Menders.
A Mender who can fuse split oak can repair the Undertow's massive drain-engines. You plot a course for a port where their recruiter operates.
  • Leave her a crate of rations and water, and fly on.
She does not even lift her hands from the keel as you depart.

Seams Splitting Open

Right away2
Rescue the sloop's crew or cargo before the hull splits apart.
With Wren's magic withdrawn, every cannon scar on the sloop's hull rips back open at once! Three injured sailors on her deck shout for a lifeline, while six casks of refined crystal sit in her flooding hold. She will break apart in minutes.
  • Rescue the three injured sailors first.
Your crew haul all three sailors safely aboard just before the sloop plunges into the clouds with her cargo, and her grateful first mate presses twenty silver into your hand.

  • Winch the six casks of crystal out of her hold first.
  • [Boarding Harpoon] Brace the sinking sloop with your harpoon winch to save both crew and cargo.
    Room: Boarding Harpoon
Your harpoon cable holds the splitting hull together just long enough to rescue all three sailors, haul across all six casks of crystal, and collect twenty silver from the grateful mate!

The Undertow's Price

At a port3
Bring Wren Calloway to the Undertow recruiter at port.
The Undertow recruiter wraps a blanket around Wren's shoulders, eyeing her like prized timber. "We'll feed her and train her, and she'll keep our Cistern drain-engines running—whether she likes the work or not. What do you want for delivering her?"
  • Demand silver, and take 30 silver up front before her trial.
She pays you thirty silver on account. "You'll get the rest once our chief engineers test her on the drain-engine below the docks."
    +30 silver+1 The Undertow standing
  • Ask how hard the work will be on her before agreeing.
"Easier than trying to heal a sinking sloop alone," the recruiter replies, giving you two crates of ship's rations and leading you down to the hidden dockside workshop.
    +2 provisions
  • Change your mind—refuse the deal and take Wren to the Menders' Refuge instead.
Wren exhales in relief as you walk out on the Undertow recruiter and set course for the sanctuary.

Drained to the Bone

Right away4
Care for Wren Calloway during her first days aboard.
Wild casters pay for magic with their own vitality, and healing an entire ship nearly killed Wren. Even unconscious in her bunk, her fingers instinctively reach out to touch your hull planking—knitting sprung seams shut in her sleep while draining the last of her life.
  • Bind her hands in soft blankets so she can sleep without draining herself.
Wrapped away from the wood, she sleeps deeply for two days and wakes ravenous and restored.
    −1 provisions
  • Let her hand rest against your hull planking so she heals your ship in her sleep.
By morning every damaged seam along your starboard hull has knitted shut, leaving Wren pale as candle wax.
    +5 hull
  • [Surgeon] Have crewmate nurse her back to strength and keep her away from the hull timber.
    Crew: Surgeon
crewmate keeps her warm, fed, and safely away from the planking; by the second day she is sitting up and teaching crewmate how a Mender knits torn tissue, healing your wounded crew.

The Split Engine Housing

Right away5
Watch the Undertow engineers test Wren on their cracked drain-engine.
In a secret cavern beneath the docks stands a cottage-sized drain-engine whose massive oak housing is split from top to bottom. Six Undertow engineers watch eagerly as their foreman points to the crack. "Knit that oak housing shut, and we'll pay your captain in full." Exhausted, Wren stares at the massive split and then at her trembling hands.
  • Order her to mend the split housing right now.
Wren presses both palms to the oak; the massive crack seals shut like a healing wound, and she collapses unconscious onto the stone floor into the engineers' arms.
  • Insist they let her rest and eat for a week before taking the test.
After one look at her pale face, the foreman agrees. Fed for a week at their table, Wren mends the split housing without collapsing, and the foreman pays you twenty silver to cover your port fees.
    −2 provisions+20 silver
  • [Wild caster] Have crewmate share half the magical strain with her during the test.
    Crew: Wild caster
crewmate places a hand over Wren's and absorbs half the physical toll as the oak housing knits shut, earning crewmate casting experience while keeping Wren on her feet.

Ambush at the Sanctuary

Sail to The Menders' Refuge (2–5 passages away)6
Carry Wren Calloway to the Menders' Refuge.
Six stone huts cling to the sanctuary rock—but moored at the pier is an elite Crown bounty cutter! Her captain holds an arrest warrant for an unregistered wild caster who "tampered with a vessel," and he moves in to search your ship.
  • Open fire and drive the bounty cutter off the sanctuary rock.
The bounty captain shouts out the charges from his warrant as his gun crews open fire.

  • Bribe the bounty captain 50 silver to tear up the warrant.

He tucks the warrant into your fifty-silver purse and sails away whistling.
  • Turn Wren Calloway over to the bounty hunter for 90 silver.
He pays you the ninety-silver bounty and leads Wren away in irons without her looking back once.

You keep the sanctuary rock between your hull and the cutter while waiting for an opening.

Blood Money

Right away7
Collect your final payout from the Undertow recruiter.
With a guard posted at the workshop door and Wren sitting exhausted on a cot behind the repaired engine, the recruiter counts out your reward. "Our engineers are satisfied. Do you want ninety silver in cash, or a crystal-recovery funnel bolted under your keel with six crystals?"
  • Demand silver.
She pays you ninety silver from an iron strongbox as her guards lead Wren away into the tunnels.

  • Take the crystal funnel fitting and 6 crystals.
Their mechanics install a fuel-saving crystal funnel beneath your engine and pack six crystals into your fuel bins.

  • Shove the money back and take Wren out of there to the Menders' Refuge!

The Mending Gift

Right away8
Deliver Wren Calloway safely to the Menders ashore.
After a week of care among the sanctuary healers, Wren is back on her feet. Walking the length of your keel with one palm against the wood, she smiles. "I know how to pace the magic now—giving just a drop a day so the timber heals itself without draining me." Behind her, the sanctuary elder adds: "Or she could sign onto your crew and put her gift to work in the sky."
  • Have her enchant your hull so its planks slowly regenerate on every voyage.
She infuses a steady, self-sustaining mend into your keel, allowing your hull planking to knit small wounds shut after every passage.
    The questline ends here.
  • Offer her a place in your crew.
Wren signs onto your crew as a wild Mender and reinforces your hull planking on her first night aboard.

  • Because you let her rest on the voyage, ask her both to enchant your hull AND join your crew!
Arriving at the sanctuary with her strength preserved, Wren has enough power for both: she enchants your hull to regenerate between voyages and signs onto your crew!
