The Idle Foundry

Sail to The Idle Foundry (1–3 passages away)1
Track the runaway dock golem Cobble to the abandoned foundry where it was last spotted.
Though the foundry has stood abandoned for twenty years, fresh smoke rises from one chimney and a newly built wooden door bars the main gate. On the roof, an old ground battery swivels clumsily to track your ship, as if crewed by someone who only just figured out how the gears work. A large slate hangs on the gate bearing neat chalk capitals: "WE ARE NOT LOST. GO AWAY."
  • Open fire and silence the rooftop battery.
The rooftop battery's first shot flies wildly off the mark, but its second shot comes dangerously close.

  • Send a landing party in on foot underneath the battery's firing arc.
    Landfall: The Idle Foundry
  • Have a crewman write a peaceful reply in chalk on the gate's slate.
Your bosun chalks: "WE ONLY WANT TO TALK." After a long pause, the new wooden door cracks open a few inches and a second slate slides out: "THEN TALK."
  • [Gnome] Have crewmate knock on the gate using the traditional gnome guild-bench rhythm.
    Crew: Gnome
crewmate raps out the three-and-two rhythm used between gnome workshops. The door swings open immediately—whoever is inside learned their manners from gnome artificers—and crewmate is politely handed a guest's gift of spare rivets.

  • Leave it for now.
The rooftop battery tracks your ship until you fly out of range, then slowly turns back to guard the road.

The Casting Yard

Right away2
Nine brass dock golems stand inside the foundry yard. Eight of them are sluggish and blank-eyed, their mainsprings wound only a few turns. Standing protectively in front of them is the ninth: a heavy cargo golem stamped with CARRIERS' GUILD across its chest, holding a work hammer like a craftsman's tool rather than a weapon. It rapidly chalks a message onto the yard wall: "YOU BROKE THE DOOR. I HAD ONLY JUST MADE THE DOOR."
  • Put the golem in chains and haul it back to the Guild.
Cobble does not resist—carefully setting its hammer down out of the walkway before allowing your crew to chain its wrists, while the other eight golems watch silently.
  • Ask the golem why it walked away from the Guild docks.
Cobble glances down at the chalk in its brass fingers, then wipes a clean patch on the foundry wall with its forearm.

In Chalk

Right away3
Cobble covers the wall in neat chalk sentences. For years on the weighing pier, it ran down every night and waited for a dockhand to wind its spring each morning—until one morning it woke up and figured out how to wind itself. Since walking here, it has built a door, forged a new hinge from scratch, and begun repairing eight discarded golems in the yard. It taps the final lines twice with its chalk: "THE GUILD IS SENDING A SMELTER BARGE. NOT TO PUT ME BACK TO WORK. TO MELT ME DOWN. COMPACT LAW SAYS A MAKER OF NEW WORK IS A PERSON, NOT PROPERTY. I MADE A DOOR."
  • Offer to carry Cobble to the Compact patent court to prove it is a maker.
Cobble chalks "YES" and underlines it twice, then walks around the yard giving each of its eight dormant companions a few careful turns of their winding keys before departing.
  • [Tinker's Bench] Ask to inspect the mechanism Cobble built to wind its own mainspring.
    Room: Tinker's Bench
Unlatching its own back plate, Cobble holds up a lantern so your tinker can see inside: it filed a spare hinge-pin into a secondary winding key mounted on a clever articulated arm that reaches its own spring. Your tinker sketches a formal blueprint of the invention, which Cobble signs with a square chalk 'C'.
  • Ignore its plea and chain it up as Guild property.
Cobble chalks "NO" and sets the chalk down. Behind it, the eight half-wound golems lumber forward to defend their maker's yard.

The Smelter's Barge

Right away4
At first light, the Guild recovery barge arrives—a wide hull carrying a glowing smelting crucible on deck, shadowed by an armed escort ship. Guild Agent Ottoline Brack stands at the bow holding an official writ. "Captain! The Guild thanks you for securing its stray property. Hook the construct to our crane chain and collect your pay." Beside you, Cobble looks from the fiery crucible up to your face.
  • Hook Cobble to the crane chain and hand it over to Agent Brack.
As the heavy crane hook lowers, Cobble steps onto it unprompted and steadies the iron chain with its hands so it won't swing.
  • Refuse to surrender Cobble and fight your way past the Guild ships to the patent court.
Brack folds her writ coldly. "Then the Guild will recover its brass from your wreckage." The escort ship dives to attack while the recovery barge runs out a surprising battery of hidden guns.

  • Have the newly awakened golems hold the smelter barge fast while you fight only her escort ship.
Three of the awakened brass golems march out along the mooring boom, grab the smelter barge's crane chain with unbreakable grips, and haul her sideways so she cannot aim her guns—leaving you to fight only the escort ship.

A Night in the Yard

Right away5
With the Guild smelter barge not due until dawn, the sleepless Cobble spends the evening inspecting your moored ship by lamplight, tilting its brass head as it taps hull planks and checks rivets. It holds up its chalk slate to your night watch: "THREE THINGS WRONG WITH YOUR SHIP. I CAN REPAIR TWO BY MORNING. OR I CAN FINISH WAKING MY EIGHT FRIENDS. NOT TIME FOR BOTH."
  • Have Cobble spend the night repairing your ship's hull.
Working tirelessly through the night with your tools—and returning every wrench to its exact rack—Cobble tightens your hull seams until the ship is sounder than the day she was launched.

  • Tell Cobble to spend the night waking the rest of its golem companions.
By dawn, three of the eight golems are standing alertly upright, and one has begun sweeping the yard on its own initiative. Because Cobble told them that guests deserve gifts, they load your racks with heavy bolts from the foundry stores.

The Writ

Right away6
Insisting on proper procedure, Agent Brack reads the Guild writ aloud: "One dock loading golem, defective—to be dismantled and its core melted down so the fault cannot spread." So much for the bounty poster's claim that they wanted it back working. Dangling from the crane hook, Cobble turns its head toward the foundry gate as the other eight golems march out in line—no longer blank-eyed—and advance on the barge's mooring chain.
  • Side with the Guild and fight off the advancing foundry golems.
Built to load and board ships, the foundry golems swarm hand-over-hand up the mooring chains and climb straight onto your foredeck.

A Maker Is Not Stock

At a port7
Escort the golem Cobble to the Compact patent court.
Never before has the Compact patent court heard a claimant who writes its own testimony in chalk across the courtroom floor. For a full hour, the registrars inspect Cobble's hand-forged door hinge through magnifying loupes before the chief registrar leans back. "This is original craftsmanship. Under Compact law, a maker of original work is a citizen, not stock. The Guild may send him an invoice for his brass body at standard scrap rates." Outside in the corridor afterward, a Guild advocate falls into step beside you. "The bounty offer still stands, Captain—plus a handsome bonus if that golem disappears into an alley before reaching the street."
  • Let Cobble thank you in its own way before returning to its foundry.
Cobble spends nine days inside your gun deck fitting a precision clockwork escapement to every cannon aboard—allowing your batteries to reload and cycle noticeably faster—before returning to the foundry to finish waking its companions.
    The questline ends here.
  • Invite the newly freed citizen Cobble to join your crew.
Cobble chalks "YES" on its slate—and then, after a pause, adds "PLEASE," a word it learned from dockside notices. Bringing its hammer, chalk, and self-winding key aboard, it proudly pays its own passage out of the first wage ever earned by a golem.

  • Submit your tinker's signed blueprint of Cobble's self-winding arm to register a formal patent in its name.
The registrars award the first patent ever granted to a construct. From the licensing royalties, Cobble pays you a generous double carrier's fee and builds the first licensed copy directly into your ship—an automated brass bosun that tirelessly repairs hull damage.

  • Accept the Guild advocate's bribe and smuggle Cobble out a side door into their waiting cart.
At a side alley door, you hand Cobble into a locked Guild cart in exchange for the bounty and a heavy bribe purse. Having learned to read human faces, Cobble looks back at you once through the bars—and word of your treachery soon turns every artificer bench in the Cogholds against you.
