The Collateral Barge

Sail to The Collateral Barge (2–4 passages away)1
Track Alaric Gaunt's trail starting at the Loan Office's collateral barge.
The Loan Office stores everything it seizes from defaulting families aboard a wide barge moored below the foundry steps: weaving looms, carpenter's tools, a wooden cradle, even a pair of child's boots tied together by the laces. Today, the barge's cargo hatches stand wide open and half the neighborhood is carrying their belongings back up the steps. Burned paper ash drifts along the canal. A watchman nursing a bandaged head tells you that Alaric Gaunt—the enforcer they call the Quiet Hand—unlocked the hatches himself using the office's own keys and sailed down the canal cut an hour ago.
  • Ask the families on the steps what Gaunt took and where he is headed.
Most of the townsfolk avoid your eyes and hurry home with their reclaimed goods. Only one person stays put: a tired weaver sitting atop her recovered loom in the middle of the lane to catch her breath.
  • [Lowborn] Have crewmate speak with the families—they will trust someone who is Lowborn too.
    Crew: Lowborn
crewmate shows their crimson-stamped Lowborn papers and helps carry the heavy end of a weaving loom up the stone steps. The mother of the house glances around and lowers her voice. "Alaric didn't steal the master register to sell it. He took it up to the Tithe Stair with a brazier of hot coals. He's calling out names one by one and burning each family's page in front of them so they know the debt is gone for good."

  • Skip the questions and sail straight down the canal cut after Gaunt.
Relieved to let someone else chase the massive enforcer, the bandaged watchman points urgently down the canal.
  • Walk away and leave the Loan Office to hunt down its own enforcer.
As you walk back to your gangplank, you step over the pair of child's boots on the dock—and a small figure darts out from the shadows to reclaim them.
    The questline ends here.

What He Gave Back

Right away2
The weaver introduces herself as Wynn Tarrant, resting her hand on her reclaimed loom and a half-charred sheet of parchment. "Gaunt carried this loom out of my cottage last spring with his own two hands. Yesterday he carried it right back inside, tossed my debt bond into my hearth fire, and never spoke a single word either time." She gazes down the canal. "He's working his way through the Loan Office's master debt register one page at a time—forty families in all. The office's armed sloop came past at noon, asking the lock-keepers for the fastest way to the Tithe Stair."
  • Take the shallow shortcuts to reach the Tithe Stair ahead of the Loan Office sloop.
Using a charred stick, Tarrant sketches the shallow back-channels in the ash on the flagstones—narrow cuts a deep-draft sloop can never navigate.

  • Overtake the Loan Office sloop and sell them the shortcut to the Tithe Stair.
The sloop's captain pays you twenty-five silver from a purse stamped with the Loan Office scales, thanking you with the brisk chill of a merchant paying a courier. Whatever happens at the Tithe Stair, her guns will be waiting there first.

The Second Notice

Right away3
Gaunt's sloop, the Second Notice, glides down the canal under easy sail, tying up at every third mooring post. At each stop, a towering man in a debt-collector's gray coat steps ashore carrying a red-bound register, knocks politely at a cottage door, hands an item back inside, and tears a page from the book. He does not hurry. Every sailor on his deck wears the same gray collector's coat—with the Loan Office brass badge sliced off the sleeve.
  • Run down the Second Notice and board her to take Gaunt and the register.
Gaunt's rogue debt-collectors man their cannons with the same grim discipline they once brought to evictions.

  • Hold back out of cannon range and follow Gaunt to see where his round ends.
Unbothered by your shadow, Gaunt finishes the canal lane door by door. Then the Second Notice steers out of the cut toward the ancient stone steps of the Tithe Stair, where a crowd of debtor families is already gathered.

The Tithe Stair

Sail to The Tithe Stair (1–3 passages away)4
Catch up with Alaric Gaunt at the Tithe Stair.
The Tithe Stair is a wide flight of ancient stone moorings climbing a terraced hillside, and tonight a debtor family waits on every single step. At the summit stands Alaric Gaunt beside a glowing iron brazier, reading one name at a time from the master debt register. With each name called, he tears out a page, drops it into the coals, and sends another family home debt-free. Hovering off the bottom of the stair lies the Loan Office patrol sloop, the Final Demand. Through a brass speaking trumpet, her captain is reading an official warning: every burned page remains a binding legal debt, and the Loan Office will collect in full.
  • Attack Gaunt's sloop and seize both the man and the debt register for the bounty.
Spotting your gun ports open, Gaunt's gray-coated crew cast off from the steps to intercept you, while Gaunt himself continues tearing pages into the brazier without looking up.

  • Position your ship between the Loan Office sloop and the steps to protect Gaunt and the families.

  • Signal the debtor families on the steps to slash the Loan Office sloop's mooring cables before you open fire.
Forty pairs of hands swarm out of the darkness and hack through the Final Demand's anchor lines. Caught in the current, the sloop slews broadside against the stone steps with her captain still shouting into her trumpet—giving your gunners a clean raking shot straight into her stern.

  • Leave it for now.
Gaunt still has plenty of pages left to burn; the stone stair isn't going anywhere.

The Quiet Hand

Right away5
Shackled in irons on your main deck, Alaric Gaunt sits quietly with his massive hands resting open on his knees. On your chart table lies the Loan Office's master debt register, thirty pages thinner than when he stole it. He has spoken only four words since your marines brought him aboard—"Mind the cradle, there"—when they cleared the barge. Now he looks up at you. "For nine years I knocked on doors for that office. Open the register to any page you like. Half the debtors listed in it are dead, and the office passed the balance down to their children." He glances meaningfully at your galley coal stove, then back at your eyes.
  • Deliver both Gaunt and the remaining debt register to the Loan Office for the full bounty.
Gaunt gives a single slow nod. Nine years ago he would have made the exact same choice, and he holds no grudge against you for it.
  • Throw the debt register into the galley stove, and turn Gaunt in alone for half price.
The heavy parchment pages burn slowly in the coals. Gaunt watches the fire until the last leaf curls into ash, and for the first time his broad shoulders seem to lose their weight. "Half a bounty," he rumbles softly. "You'd make a poor debt collector, Captain."
  • Unlock Gaunt's irons and take him to the Tithe Stair so he can finish burning the register.
Rubbing his chafed wrists, Gaunt picks up the debt register and asks to be put ashore at the Tithe Stair. A crowd of anxious families is waiting on the stone steps when you tie up. Lighting the brazier, he begins reading from the top of the next page.
  • Ask Gaunt what other Loan Office locks his keyring opens.
He pulls a heavy iron keyring from inside his gray coat and sets it on the planks. "The Counting Barge—where the Loan Office vaults all the silver those ledger pages squeezed out of the lanes. One reinforced clerks' hatch at the waterline, one master key, and a twin-gun battery mounted on the roof."

Forty Pages

Right away6
By the small hours of the morning, the iron brazier is brim-full of gray ash and the steps of the Tithe Stair stand empty. Gaunt tosses the debt register's bare leather covers onto the embers and warms his scarred hands over the heat. "Now there isn't a single legal debt left for them to collect—which means my head is only worth the hanging. If you want real silver, the Loan Office keeps every coin those forty pages earned locked inside the Counting Barge. And I still have the master key." He states it with the quiet certainty of a clerk reading out a final balance.
  • Sail with Gaunt to raid the Loan Office's Counting Barge.
With practiced precision, Gaunt charts the back-channel route to the flooded quarry and marks the exact hour the barge's night watch changes.

  • Leave the Loan Office's barge alone and offer Gaunt a permanent place in your crew.
He weighs your offer for as long as it takes the embers in the brazier to die. Then he drapes his gray collector's coat over the stone balustrade and steps aboard your ship in his shirtsleeves.

  • Put Gaunt in chains now that the register is ash, and turn him in for the half-bounty.
Without a word of complaint, Gaunt holds out his wrists and even shows your marines which way the iron key turns. "Half price, with no ledger," he notes wryly. "The chief clerk is going to hate paying you."

The Loan Office

At a port7
Deliver Alaric Gaunt and the master debt register to the Loan Office at port.
The Loan Office consists of a heavy brass teller's grille, a call bell, and a hard wooden bench for petitioners waiting to have their pleas refused. At the sight of the master debt register, the chief clerk hurries out from behind the brass bars—something he never does for mere people. He counts the remaining parchment pages twice, letting out a sharp hiss over the thirty torn stubs. Standing where delinquent debtors usually stand, hat in hand, Gaunt calmly reads the foreclosure notices pinned to the wall as if he hadn't nailed up half of them himself.
  • Hand over both Gaunt and the debt register to collect your full bounty.
The chief clerk pays out the full bounty in freshly minted silver and has you sign a receipt in a black ledger. Two armed guards march Gaunt through the brass grille—and through an inner iron door that has no handle on the inside.
    The questline ends here.
  • [Quartermaster] Have crewmate loudly calculate how much interest those thirty burned pages were worth.
    Crew: Quartermaster
In a clear voice that carries across the waiting room, crewmate totals up the compound interest on thirty vanished family debts—and suggests what the Loan Office might pay to keep that figure from being repeated in every tavern in port. Tight-lipped, the chief clerk pays the full bounty plus thirty silver for your silence.

Half for the Man

At a port8
Deliver Alaric Gaunt to the Loan Office without the master debt register.
When the chief clerk hears the words "no register," he freezes in place like an accountant staring at a column of figures that refuses to balance. Forty generational family debts have vanished into smoke, with not a scrap of parchment left to prove a penny was ever owed. "The terms on the poster are explicit," he says stiffly. "Half pay for the man alone." He glares at Gaunt the way he would glare at a cracked vault door; Gaunt gazes back at him the way he used to look at cottage doors.
  • Take the half.
He counts out the half-bounty coin by coin, parting with each piece as if it drew blood, while Gaunt walks through the brass grille without needing to be pushed.
    The questline ends here.
  • Point out that the poster asked for Alaric Gaunt—who is standing right here—and demand the full bounty.

The Counting Barge

Sail to The Counting Barge (1–2 passages away)9
Locate the Loan Office's armored Counting Barge.
Moored in the center of a flooded stone quarry sits the Counting Barge, her hull armored in iron shutters and crowned by a twin-cannon roof battery. Every boarding ladder is hauled up tight. Gaunt points to a low iron hatch set near the waterline, well below the depression angle of the roof guns. "That's the clerks' entrance. They change the guard at midnight and count silver until dawn. I hated coming here even when I worked for them."
  • Run out your cannons and silence the barge's roof battery by force.
Iron gun shutters clang down along the entire length of the barge as her heavy roof cannons swing around to meet you.

What the Pages Earned

Right away10
Inside, the vault is more compact than the register's forty pages made it seem. Heavy canvas bags of silver sit stacked on shelves, each tagged with the name of a canal lane, alongside racks of pawned trade tools. Dominating the center of the chamber stands the barge's master interest clock: a man-high brass escapement that has never lost a single second in thirty years, because compound interest is calculated by its beat. Standing in the doorway, Gaunt refuses to touch a single coin. "I carried it in here once," he says quietly. "I won't carry it for myself."
  • Unbolt the precision brass clock movement to time your gun batteries, and let Gaunt return the silver to the families.
Your engineers dismantle the master clock gear by gear. Coupled to your gun deck, its precision escapement times every reload to the second, while Gaunt takes a skiff to return the tagged silver bags to the canal lanes himself.
    The questline ends here.
  • Take the silver.
Your crew haul a hundred and forty silver out of the vault in tagged canvas bags while Gaunt silently reads the family names on every label as they pass. Come morning, Gaunt is gone—having taken the rack of pawned tools and your rowboat.

  • Let Gaunt return the silver bags to the families, and claim the Loan Office's master bullion scales for your ship.
Gaunt loads the tagged coin bags into a skiff to make the final door-to-door round of his life. You claim the office's master brass bullion scales—balanced true to a single grain so no port merchant can ever shortchange you again—and the grateful families send fifty silver down to your dock in thanks.
