Green Over White

Sail to The False Harbour Light (2–4 passages away)1
Track down the wreckers' false harbor lantern in the fog bank.
Fog hangs over the marsh channels as thick as wet wool. Dead ahead shines a two-color lantern—green over white, the official entry signal of the fen port—yet your chart shows nothing beneath that light except a jagged spur of rock. Down in the mist below the lantern, wooden hulls creak against moorings. Wreckers are waiting for an unwary ship to steer straight onto the reef.
  • Steer toward the false light as if fooled by the trap, with your cannons loaded and run out.
You hold your course toward the reef until the black rock looms through the mist, then throw the helm hard over. Two wrecker sloops lunging out from behind the stone spur expecting a crippled hull get a full broadside instead.

  • [Lookout] Have your lookout spot the lantern raft before you come within reef range.
    Room: Lookout
Peering through the mist, your lookout spots the false lantern floating on a small wooden raft tethered to the rock spur. A single cannon shot severs its mooring line. As the raft drifts away downwind, one wrecker sloop chases after the light while the second sails out alone into your waiting guns.

  • Put out all your running lamps and drift silently in the fog to follow the wreckers back to camp.
No merchant ship strikes the reef tonight. Shortly before dawn, a sloop slips out from behind the rock spur, hauls the false lantern aboard, and heads home through the marsh channels—with your darkened ship ghosting silently in her wake.
  • Leave it for now.
You haul off into open water, keeping the false harbor light safely off your beam.

What Came Down in the Fog

Right away2
The surviving wreckers stand on the gravel beach beside their beached hulk with their hands raised in surrender. Their leader, an older woman named Runa Brill, holds out a leather-bound account book before you even ask. "Every ship we lured onto the spur is logged in here—what she carried, and the harbormaster's one-third cut beside it. Harbormaster Osbert Clay sends us the schedules telling us which ships are worth hanging the lamp for. He only posted a bounty on us because the Guild auditors are coming to inspect his port this spring."
  • Carry out the bounty to the letter: burn the wreckers' hulk and take their false lantern as proof.
Your crew salvage twenty silver worth of cargo crates before putting a torch to the hulk, which burns with a fierce blue flame as the stored lamp oil catches. The wreckers' account book goes up in smoke along with the timbers.

  • Take both the false harbor lantern and the wreckers' account book.
Runa Brill hands over the ledger, holding your gaze. "Clay will gladly pay you the bounty for stopping us. Once he does, ask him how much extra he'll pay to buy back that book."
  • [Marine] Have crewmate search the beached hulk thoroughly before you leave.
    Crew: Marine
Prying up a false deck plank, crewmate uncovers twenty-five silver from the wreckers' private stash alongside three letters written by a harbor clerk naming target ships and tide times. You take the letters, the account book, and the false lantern.

The Wreckers' Fire

Right away3
The wrecker sloop leads you through the reeds to a gravel bank where an old hull sits beached beside a driftwood fire. Twenty people—some of them children—are camped around the blaze. Sitting on a crate by the fire is a man in a harbor clerk's gray cloak, counting silver coins out of the wreckers' strongbox into his own leather satchel. Once finished, he walks down to a rowboat alone and pushes off toward the fen port.
  • Open fire on the wrecker sloops while they lie beached on the gravel shore.
Caught flat-footed on the gravel bank, one sloop is smashed before she can push off, while the second claws into the fog with half her crew still scrambling for the rails.

  • Leave the sleeping camp alone and quietly intercept the harbor clerk's rowboat.
You overhaul the rowboat in the mist before the startled clerk can dump his satchel overboard. Inside you find twenty silver—the harbormaster's personal one-third cut of last month's wrecks—along with a schedule of rich merchant ships written in official harbor script.

The Portmaster's Desk

At a port4
Deliver the wreckers' false lantern to Harbormaster Clay to claim the bounty.
Harbormaster Osbert Clay maintains a spotless office overlooking the port's real entry beacon. He turns the wreckers' green-and-white lantern over in his hands and smiles like a man finally rid of a nagging toothache. "Wiped them all out, did you? Splendid. The fen channels are safe for honest commerce once more." He reaches for the port strongbox, never once asking if you found any paperwork on that gravel beach.
  • Say nothing about the ledger and collect the posted bounty.
Clay counts out the bounty in crisp Crown silver and shakes your hand warmly with both of his. Come spring, the Guild auditors will find a spotless ledger and a heroic harbormaster.

  • Drop the wreckers' account book onto his desk and name your price for keeping quiet.
Clay turns as pale as his own ledger paper. He pays out the official bounty first—since refusing it would raise eyebrows—and then counts out thirty-five silver from his private purse to buy back the incriminating book.

  • Keep the account book in your coat, walk out to the pier, and ring the harbor fog bell.
Clay is still holding the wreckers' lantern when the bronze fog bell begins to clang. By the tenth stroke, every river pilot and barge crew in port has crowded onto the pier—just in time to hear you climb onto a mooring post and read the harbormaster's one-third wrecking cuts aloud.

The Fog Bell

At a port5
Bring the captured harbor clerk back to the fen port.
The fen port is just stirring to life as your ship ties up at the pier. Having had the entire voyage to ponder his fate, the captured clerk has decided to be cooperative. "Harbormaster Clay will pay handsomely at his back door to get me back quietly. Or... you can ring that." He nods toward the great bronze fog bell at the end of the dock. "The harbor pilots lost one of their own brothers to the false light last autumn. Ring that bell, and they'll listen to every word I confess—and then they'll march straight up the hill for Clay."
  • Ring the fog bell and stand the clerk on a mooring post to confess to the pilots.
As the bell echoes across the harbor, a crowd gathers fast. Standing on the mooring post, the clerk recites ship names, dates, and Clay's one-third cuts in the flat, methodical voice of a man reading a freight manifest. Before he even finishes the list, twenty furious harbor pilots are marching up the hill toward the port office.
  • Take the clerk to the back door of the port office and sell him back to Clay quietly.
Harbormaster Clay pays you fifty-five in Crown silver at his back door, and the clerk scurries inside past him without a word. Out on the notice board, the bounty poster stays pinned up—and out in the marsh, the false lantern keeps burning.

The Port Chest

Right away6
Osbert Clay doesn't wait around for the angry pilots to reach his door. Bolting out his back entrance with the harbor treasury chest tucked under one arm, he sprints down the stone steps to the port's revenue cutter—which still answers to his orders for another fifteen minutes. The cutter chops her mooring lines with her gun ports already open.
  • Intercept the harbor guard cutter and stop Clay from escaping with the treasury chest.
Desperate to break clear of the harbor mouth, the guard cutter opens fire on your ship first.

  • [Gunner] Have crewmate shoot away the cutter's rudder as she clears the pier.

  • Let Clay flee into the fog—the harbor pilots already have the proof they need.
The guard cutter vanishes northward into the fog bank carrying Clay and the port strongbox. Standing on the pier, the harbor pilots watch her disappear, then turn back toward the port's true entry light.

The Pilots of the Fen

Right away7
The harbor pilots take over the port office without breaking a single pane of glass. By noon, a permanent pilot watch is posted day and night atop the true entry beacon, and an armed launch has been dispatched to the gravel beach to bring the wreckers in for trial. Cap in hand, the senior harbor pilot walks down to your gangplank.
  • Accept the pilot house's prized brass telescope as your reward.
For sixty years, the long brass Starglass hung in the harbor pilot house, cutting through marsh fog like a knife. The senior pilot bolts it to your Lookout rail with her own hands.

  • Claim a ten-percent finder's share from the recovered harbor treasury chest.

  • Ask only that the port shipwrights repair your hull and restock your larder.
