The Tailings Slope
Sail to The Pit Nine Tailings (2–4 passages away)1 Hunt the crystal leviathan Old Greyback at the Pit Nine tailings.
Three wrecked ore barges lie torn open on the rock slope below Pit Nine. Above them, a cliffside chute pours glittering gray runoff down the rock face. Old Greyback is feeding at the bottom—a dock-length crystal leviathan grinding its jaws against the stone.
A harpoon brig, the Long Patience, is circling upwind. Her lookouts have spotted you too.

- Leave it for now.You pull back and leave the beast feeding at the base of the cliff.
The Heart-Crystal
Right away2The keg-sized heart-crystal rests in a cargo sling on your deck, humming in resonance with your ship's Drive. The Greywater Company will pay the full bounty for it at port—but as your engineer points out, the crystal itself holds enough raw power to fuel your ship for an entire season.
- Crate the heart-crystal to turn in to the Greywater Company for the bounty.Your crew pack the massive crystal in wet sacking for delivery, sweeping the loose shards into your fuel jars.+4 crystal
- [Gnome] Have crewmate saw off the loose outer facets for fuel before crating it.Crew: Gnomecrewmate carefully saws away every outer facet the Company cashier won't miss, filling your fuel jars before packing the core for delivery.+9 crystal+1 Repair skill XP
- Burn the bounty poster and keep the heart-crystal to fuel your own ship. You toss the Company's bounty poster into the galley stove. Just the loose chips from the heart-crystal pack your fuel jars to the brim.+4 crystal
Two Hunters, One Heart
Right away3Oskar's plan is straightforward: his brig will harpoon the beast and hold it on tether lines while your ship moves in close to shatter the crystal hide over its heart. "It'll lunge at whoever hits it hardest," he calls across. "That means you."
- Move in close and attack the pinned leviathan.Oskar's crew sink three harpoons into the beast's flank. Greyback lets out a deafening screech and whips around on the tether lines, charging straight at your ship.Battle: Crystal leviathan · Close rangeIf you win:+4 crystal
- [Helm 2] Have crewmate keep the beast angled away from the brig while you attack.Crew: Helm 2+crewmate holds your ship where the leviathan must turn its back on the brig to reach you. Oskar's crew sink a fourth harpoon into its hide, then a fifth.Battle: Crystal leviathan · Close rangeIf you win:+4 crystal+1 Helm skill XP
The Night Chute
Right away4At dawn, the night shift comes off duty. The foreman, an Ursine woman named Dagna Greaves, walks out along the pier toward your ship. "You're here for the beast. It never touched a barge until the Company started dumping raw crystal runoff off the cliff at night to dodge refinery fees. They ring the dinner bell every night and then put a bounty on the guest." She spits over the rail. "Block that chute and it'll go back down to the deep seams."
- Ignore her advice—wait for nightfall and kill the beast when it comes to feed.Greaves says nothing more and walks away. That night the runoff pours down the cliff, Greyback rises from the clouds to feed, and your guns are waiting.Battle: Crystal leviathanIf you win:+4 crystal
- Help the night-shift miners block the runoff chute. With forty miners and your cargo winch, it takes most of the night to wedge the chute shut. The crystal runoff backs up into the Company's own settling yard where it belongs, and Greaves's shift shares a hot meal with your crew.+3 provisions
- [Stone mage] Have crewmate permanently seal the rock chute with magic.Crew: Stone caster · Magecrewmate presses a hand against the cliff face, and the stone flows together until the mouth of the chute vanishes completely. There is no wedge to knock out and no seam left to open. The miners cheer until their foreman waves them quiet.−20 mana (the crewmate who acted)+1 Casting skill XP+3 provisions
The Company Cashier
At a port5 Deliver the heart-crystal to the Greywater Company cashier at port.
The Greywater cashier weighs the heart-crystal twice on his heavy scale. "Three ore barges lost," he says. "The directors will be relieved." Behind his desk hangs a wall chart of Pit Nine showing the cliffside runoff chute—stamped with the warning: NIGHT DUMPING ONLY.
- Collect the bounty payment and leave. He pays out the full bounty in silver coin without deducting an exchange fee, calling it a courtesy of the Company. The questline ends here.
- Demand hush money for keeping quiet about the illegal night dumping at the chute. The office goes dead silent. The cashier pays the posted bounty at once, slides an extra pouch of silver from an unmarked drawer across the counter, and asks you to lower your voice.+30 silver+1 heatThe questline ends here.
Cutting the Heart
Right away6The heart-crystal is too large for a standard fuel jar and too volatile to leave hanging in a sling. Your crew gather around it with a saw and a copper funnel. Left whole in a custom cradle, it can continuously trickle-feed your Drive. Cut into pieces, it will fill every fuel jar aboard and leave prime facets to sell.
- Mount the intact heart-crystal on a copper funnel to continuously feed your Drive.Your crew build a reinforced cradle beside the fuel racks and run a copper conduit straight to the Drive, allowing the heart-crystal to power the ship directly on long flights.Fitting: Crystal Funnel+4 crystalThe questline ends here.
- Saw the crystal into fuel chunks and sell the finest facets at port.It takes a full day and two saw blades to break it down. The chunks pack your fuel jars full, and a jeweler at the next port pays handsomely for the clear facets without asking where they came from.+14 crystal+45 silverThe questline ends here.
- [Gnome] Have crewmate shave a fuel slice off the grain while keeping the core intact for a funnel.Crew: Gnomecrewmate studies the crystal lattice for an hour before sawing off a single clean slab that fills your fuel jars, then mounts the still-humming core onto a copper Drive funnel. The questline ends here.
Seventy-Thirty Split
Right away7Greyback lies dead across the tailings slope. Before the dust settles, Oskar winches the warm, keg-sized heart-crystal onto his own deck. "My harpoons held it," he calls across, his crew still hefting their irons despite the gashes in his hull. "Seventy percent for me, thirty for you, and I turn it in to the Company."
- Accept the thirty-percent share and leave.Oskar pays your cut out of his own pocket on the spot. The Long Patience turns toward the Company office with the heart-crystal secured on her deck.+30 silverThe questline ends here.
- Open fire on the Long Patience and take the heart-crystal by force.Oskar grins grimly and signals his gunners. "Looks like we hunt twice today."Battle: Bounty hunters · Close rangeIf you win:+15 silver
- [Quartermaster] Have crewmate demand an even fifty-fifty split.Crew: Quartermastercrewmate tallies up the cost of Oskar's harpoons, your ammunition, and the hull damage both ships took, making a sharp case for an even split. Oskar grumbles and shakes on it. Both ships dock at the Company pier side by side and collect half the bounty each. The questline ends here.
The Mine-Guard Cutter
Right away8The Company notices the blocked chute before noon. An armed mine-guard cutter drops down the cliff face with her gun ports open. A clerk at her rail reads out charges of sabotage and trespassing, demanding the names of the night-shift miners. Greaves's crew stand firm along the pier with their picks and refuse to give a single name.
- Move your ship between the guard cutter and the miners to fight her off.The clerk stops reading as your hull blocks his line of fire. The cutter's opening shot screams over the miners' heads and smashes into your rail.Battle: Excise cutter · Close rangeIf you win:+20 silver
- Challenge the clerk to prove a chute was ever there. He stares at the seamless cliff face through his spyglass. With no wedge, no chute, and no visible sabotage to report, the cutter hovers offshore signaling for orders until her captain finally gives up and departs.
- Abandon the miners and ambush the leviathan tonight at the dry chute. You pull back and leave the miners to the guard cutter. That night, Greyback rises to a dry chute, slow and confused, and your guns are waiting.Battle: Crystal leviathanIf you win:+4 crystal
Back to the Deep Seams
Right away9After three nights without runoff, Old Greyback stops rising to the cliff. On the fourth morning, your lookout spots its long gray silhouette sinking deep into the clouds toward the lower seams. The Company's bounty goes unclaimed, but the grateful night-shift miners come out to the pier with a reward of their own.
- Accept the miners' crystal-dowsing rod and a sack of ore.Greaves hands over a forked copper rod worn dark from years of use, capable of detecting crystal veins through solid rock, along with a heavy sack of clean ore.Fitting: Crystal Dowser+8 crystalThe questline ends here.
- Recruit an experienced miner who wants to leave the Company.A broad-shouldered Ursine hauler steps forward immediately, eager to trade the mining pits for the open sky. His shift sends him aboard with a sack of clean crystal ore.New crewmate: Ursine, Deckhand+4 crystalThe questline ends here.
