The Tide Reader
At the delivery port1 Deliver the sealed tide tables to the buyer.
The buyer is a gray-haired scholar with spectacles perched on her nose. She breaks the wax seals immediately. "A mountain lake has no natural tides. This one was given artificial tides by an Old Kingdom pumping engine on its bed. Only when the wind dies completely does the water lie flat enough to spot the copper observatory dome beneath the surface. According to these tables, the next dead calm is only days away."
- Ask the scholar for the bearing to the mountain lake. She copies out the compass bearing along with the exact hours of the predicted calm. "Hurry—scavengers bought copies of these same tables before I did."
- [Water mage] Have crewmate double-check her tide calculations.Crew: Water caster · Magecrewmate spots a half-day error in the ancient pump cycle and corrects the timetable. Too delighted to be embarrassed, the scholar shares everything she knows about the surrounding sky-lanes.Reveal 3 waypoints
- Take your delivery pay and leave.Already buried in her calculations, she hands over twenty silver without even looking up.+20 silverThe questline ends here.
Before the Calm
Right away2She hurries after you down to the dock, her arms overflowing with charts. "The dead calm is only days off—enough time for one errand, not two. Either carry me to the mountain lake by way of the Old Kingdom floodgate house that drains it, or deliver my delicate instruments to my college in the next region so someone believes my findings before scavengers strip the dome bare." She is seventy if she is a day, and entirely out of breath.
- Bring the scholar aboard and set course for the old floodgate house. She pays her passage in small silver coins, counted twice, and claims a corner of your chart table. She proves lively company, and her weather predictions are never once wrong.+20 silver
- Leave the scholar at port and take her written notes to the floodgate house yourself. She copies out the exact number of turns for the floodgate wheel, the hours of the calm, and the safest approach lanes. "Do not open the sluice gate all the way," she warns earnestly. "I mean that."Reveal 2 waypoints
- Take her crate of tide instruments and deliver them to her college in the next region. She carefully packs a brass tide gauge and a case of glass floats into a padded crate. "The college lies in the next region. My colleagues will never believe the pump still runs without these readings."New job: Tide instruments
The Floodgate House
Sail to The Floodgate House (1–2 passages away)3 Locate the Old Kingdom floodgate house below the mountain lake.
A squat stone gatehouse straddles the rushing stream that drains the high mountain lake. Inside stands an iron sluice wheel as tall as a man, paired with an Old Kingdom stone tablet listing how many turns lower the lake by how many feet. Fresh grease gleams on the axle, and a scavenger's tally is chalked on the wall. Opening the gate will drop the lake level until the observatory dome stands half-dry—though the rushing current will stir up the surface for a day.
- Turn the iron wheel six times to drain the lake level down.
- [Water mage] Have crewmate use water magic to ease the floodgate open safely.Crew: Water caster · Magecrewmate stands above the sluice channel with both hands pressed to the wet stone, easing the lake water out as smoothly as pouring from a pitcher. The surface drops foot by foot without a single timber straining.−15 mana (the crewmate who acted)+1 Casting skill XP
- Leave the floodgate closed, copy the Old Kingdom tablet, and head up to the lake. You decide glassy water is worth more than a dry entrance. Better yet, your rubbing of the Old Kingdom tide tablet fetches twenty-five silver from a passing antiquarian.+25 silver
The College Porter
At the delivery port4 Deliver the tide instruments to the scholar's college in the next region.
A college porter signs for the padded crates and fetches a senior lecturer in a patched gown, who pries them open right on the cobblestones. "So she was right all along. For forty years the faculty laughed at her." He pays your freight fee out of his own purse rather than make you wait on the bursar, then looks up earnestly. "You spoke with her. Is she well? Is she still working alone up there?"
- Tell him she is in good health, completely vindicated, and in a tearing hurry. He laughs so hard he has to sit down on the packing crate. "Then forty years haven't changed her a bit." He personally leads you inside to the college's instrument hall.+40 silver
- [Water mage] Have crewmate diagram the lake's artificial tide pump for the faculty.Crew: Water caster · Magecrewmate sketches the mountain lake and its pressure pump in chalk on the courtyard flagstones. Within ten minutes, six lecturers are gathered around the drawing in heated debate—and crewmate is schooling them all.+40 silver+1 Casting skill XP
The Flat Water
Sail to The Flat Water (1–3 passages away)5 Reach the mountain lake during the dead calm.
Every breath of wind has died, leaving the mountain lake as flat and clear as poured glass. Clearly visible beneath the surface sits a great copper dome with its observation shutters wide open. A scavenger barge is already moored directly above it with a diving bell swung out over the rail—and her crew are not pleased to see another ship arrive.
- Land on the far shore and descend into the observatory by the ancient stone stair.Landfall: The Drowned Observatory
- With the lake drained low, row over and climb dry-shod through the dome's upper shutters. Thanks to the opened floodgate, the crown of the copper dome stands six feet clear of the water, while the scavenger barge sits stranded on a mudbank with its diving bell hanging uselessly over the side. Your crew step straight from your boat onto green copper and climb inside.
- Attack the scavenger barge and seize her diving bell.In the dead calm there is no wind to maneuver. Both ships sit dead in the water above the submerged dome and pound each other at point-blank range.Battle: Sky pirates · Close range, Dead calmIf you win:+30 silver
- Call out to the scavenger barge and offer to split the salvage evenly. The barge master weighs your offer for as long as it takes him to count your cannon ports. Then he nods and swings his diving bell out over your side of the dome.
- Leave it for now.A faint breeze ripples across the mountain lake, hiding the copper dome beneath a thousand silver wavelets. You will have to wait for the next calm.
The Instrument Hall
Right away6Precision survey gear hangs from every oak beam of the hall: spirit levels, brass azimuth rings, and a helm compass the size of a cartwheel. The master artificers look up from their workbenches as one. "We pay our trusted carriers in craftsmanship," the lecturer says. "What does your vessel require?"
- Have the college artificers rebuild your ship's helm and navigation gear. The master craftsmen refit your steering linkages and compass housing to the exacting standards of a royal survey vessel, and pay you forty silver on top.Upgrade: Helm+40 silverThe questline ends here.
- Decline the refit and ask for your bonus in silver coin. The college bursar counts out seventy silver coins—slowly, methodically, and in full.+70 silverThe questline ends here.
Under the Dome
Right away7 Explore the interior of the submerged observatory.
The Old Kingdom built this chamber to study water pressure, not stars. At the center of the dome stands the machine that gave the mountain lake its artificial tides: a bronze pressure-pump with a muzzle like a siege mortar. Suspended in a gimbal cradle above it hangs a crystal lens as wide as a feast table.
- Unbolt the bronze tide-pump and mount it on your gun deck as a weapon.Bolted to your gun deck and fed from a water cask, the Deeptide cannon hurls a high-pressure slug of water that strips two layers of magical wards off anything it hits.Weapon: Deep Tide LobberThe questline ends here.
- Claim the massive crystal lens and sell the first look through it to the scholar.Braced on your Lookout rail, the Starglass lens brings distant skies into razor-sharp focus, and the tide scholar gladly pays sixty silver for the privilege of making the first observations.Relic: Star Glass+60 silverThe questline ends here.
- [Water mage] Have crewmate awaken the ancient bronze tide-pump before dismantling it.Crew: Water caster · Magecrewmate channels mana into the bronze bindings and cycles the ancient engine one final time, raising the entire lake a hand's breadth before your crew unbolt the Deeptide cannon. Studying how the Old Kingdom shaped water pressure teaches crewmate a new spell. The questline ends here.
- Let the tide scholar examine the observatory before your crew touch anything. She stands silently beneath the copper dome for a long time, taking in her life's work. Then she shows your gunners how the Old Kingdom calibrated the bronze pump's elevation—a secret no one else alive could have deciphered. In return, she asks only to keep the lens for her college, and pays you forty silver. The questline ends here.
