The Heron Figurehead

Right away1
Lashed inside the wreck's cargo hold and wrapped in heavy canvas is a carved wooden figurehead: a heron-headed woman with an open beak and a brass tube fitted down her throat. A shipyard mark is branded beneath one wing. Looking closely at the grain, you see she was cleanly sawn off her ship rather than torn loose in a wreck.
  • Haul the figurehead aboard and ask about its brand at the next shipyard.
It takes four deckhands to muscle the heavy carving aboard. Superstitious to the bone, your crew stand her upright in the hold with her face turned toward the bulkhead.
  • [Gunner] Have crewmate inspect the brass tube inside the figurehead's throat.
    Crew: Gunner
crewmate peers down the brass tube. "That's a rifled barrel. She wasn't just decoration—she was a disguised bow cannon." crewmate recognizes the shipyard brand beneath the wing and names the port where she was carved.
    +1 Gunnery skill XP
  • Saw the brass tube out for scrap metal and burn the wooden carving.
You sell the heavy brass tube by weight at the next dock. The old timber burns poorly, sending up thick clouds of pitch-black smoke.

A Night in the Hold

Right away2
That night, the cargo hold reeks of old pitch and brine. Your deckhands refuse to sling their hammocks near the carving—every sailor knows a figurehead sawn off a living ship carries a dark curse. Still, whoever wrapped her in heavy canvas took great care, and the folds feel stiff with something hidden inside. You have time to inspect one detail before the watch changes.
  • Order the crew to scrub the grime off the carving and check the brass barrel.
Beneath decades of grime, the original paint is still vibrant: slate-grey feathers and a sharp yellow eye. Wedged deep inside the brass throat, you discover an oilcloth pouch holding the last gunner's coin purse.
    +20 silver
  • Cut open the stiff canvas wrappings to see what is sewn inside.
Sewn flat inside the heavy sailcloth is an official parchment bearing an Excise seal: a legal writ ordering the figurehead sawn from her prow "in full settlement" of her captain's debt. Someone preserved that receipt for nineteen years.

The Yard Foreman

At a port3
Ask about the heron figurehead at a port shipyard.
The shipyard foreman recognizes the carving before you even finish unwrapping the canvas. "The Excise sawed her off the Grey Heron nineteen years back to settle a tax debt. The ship still flies under the old captain's daughter, and she hasn't held her bow steady in a gale since." Nearby, an antiquities dealer by the gate spots the carving and starts counting silver into his palm.
  • Ask where to find the Grey Heron so you can return her figurehead.
The foreman marks her usual route on your chart: the wind-scoured lanes of the next region, where few other freighters dare to fly.
  • Walk over to the gate and hear what the antiquities dealer is offering.
He names his price before you even reach him, and it is a handsome sum of silver.
  • Leave it for now.
You have the heron figurehead carried back down to the hold and stood facing the hull planks once more.

The Heron's Wake

Sail to The Bare-Prowed Ship in the next region4
Track down the Grey Heron in the next region and return her figurehead.
You spot the Grey Heron pitching wildly in a howling gale, a bare timber stump where her figurehead ought to be. Worse, an Excise revenue cutter is closing on her windward beam flying a seizure flag—coming to collect on the exact same nineteen-year-old debt. When the Heron's captain spots the carving lashed on your deck, she nearly lets go of her helm wheel.
  • Attack the Excise cutter and drive her off the Grey Heron.
The revenue cutter swings her gun ports toward you instead. In this howling gale, half of every broadside flies wide on both sides.

  • Pay off the Grey Heron's sixty-silver tax debt yourself.
    Costs 60 silver
The Excise lieutenant counts your silver twice, lowers the seizure flag, and officially closes the nineteen-year-old debt in his logbook.
    +1 The Crown standing
  • Show the Excise lieutenant the nineteen-year-old writ proving the figurehead already settled the debt.
He reads the parchment twice, then a third time, hunting for any legal loophole around the words "in full settlement." Finding none, he lowers the seizure flag and logs the debt as settled before he was born.
  • Surrender the figurehead to the Excise lieutenant to settle the ship's debt and claim a finder's fee.
The lieutenant accepts the carving in payment of the arrears and lets the freighter go. The Grey Heron's captain sails off without a word of thanks, while the Excise pays you a tidy finder's fee.

  • Leave it for now.
You hold your ship downwind out of cannon range. The Excise cutter is in no hurry, and the gale shows no sign of easing.

The Dealer at the Gate

Right away5
The dealer buys maritime curiosities for noble houses that like to hang old ship carvings on their walls. "I'll pay you a fair price right here and crate her myself. Or, if you deliver her to a noble estate in the next region, I'll pay carriage on top. Rich collectors love meeting the captain who salvaged a piece—it makes a better story over dinner." Not once does he ask which ship she belonged to.
  • Sell the figurehead to the dealer on the spot.
He counts out a hundred and ten silver coins without another word and has his porters crate the carving before you leave the dock.

  • Accept his delivery contract and carry the crated figurehead to the noble estate.
He pays a third of the fee in advance and nails the crate shut himself. "Don't let their steward haggle with you. The agreed price is written on the shipping label."

  • [Gnome] Pay for a night on the shipyard lathe and have crewmate convert the brass throat into a deck cannon.
    Crew: GnomeCosts 40 silver
crewmate rents the yard's heavy lathe for the night. Stripped of its wooden feathers, the brass throat becomes a working Gale cannon once more—though the old foreman refuses to watch the carving destroyed.

  • Turn down the dealer's offer and return the figurehead to the Grey Heron.
The dealer pockets his silver without offense. "Sentiment never pays, Captain." Back at the slipway, the foreman gives you the Grey Heron's route through the windy lanes of the next region.

Head to the Wind

Right away6
In the sheltered lee of a sky-crag, the freighter's crew bolt the heron figurehead back onto her bow. When the Grey Heron swings out into the gale again, she holds her nose dead into the wind, steady as an anvil. Her captain wipes her eyes on her sleeve. "The tube in her throat was a bow cannon. When they sawed her off, we cast a twin barrel from the same mold. Take it with my blessing—or take our old masthead vane and a purse of silver."
  • Take the gun.
You mount the long brass Stormcaller battery on your deck—a rapid-fire air cannon that hurls three punishing shots in quick succession.
    The questline ends here.
  • Take the Grey Heron's ancient weathervane and her purse of silver.
Her masthead vane is a piece of Old Kingdom craft that pivots a hull a split-second ahead of incoming fire. Alongside it, she hands you fifty silver—nineteen years of savings she had set aside against the debt.

The Long Hall

At the delivery port7
Deliver the crated figurehead to the noble estate in the next region.
The estate steward has the crate pried open inside a grand hall hung with forty other ship figureheads: roaring lions, painted maidens, a sea-king gripping a snapped trident. Beneath each carving gleams a brass plaque engraved with a vessel's name, a date, and—under several of them—the words "Seized for Debt." He counts out the silver written on the shipping label and waits for you to leave.
  • Take the silver payment and leave the estate.
The silver is good weight. As you walk out the doors, a footman is already polishing a blank brass plaque for the heron.

    The questline ends here.
  • Ask the steward to pay you with a weapon from the estate armory instead of coin.
The steward is glad to part with iron rather than silver. The estate armory is stacked with ship cannons seized the exact same way as the figureheads in the hall. You pick out the finest piece on the racks, and he adds thirty silver for the freight.
    Weapon: a random weapon+30 silver
    The questline ends here.
  • Produce the old Excise writ proving the debt was legally settled nineteen years ago.
The steward reads the words "in full settlement" and goes pale. A noble house cannot be caught displaying a settled debt as a trophy without facing scandal. He pays you nearly double the label price on the spot just to watch you burn the writ in his fireplace.
