One Mast, Two Sisters
At a port1 Meet the storm-chasing sisters at the port ahead.
The storm mast lies stretched along the dock planking, sheathed in heavy copper from heel to truck with thick braided leads coiled at its base. Two sisters stand arguing at either end of it. The elder sister wants it stepped onto a sturdy hull and flown straight into the towering anvil cloud to the east to charge her rack of crystal jars. The younger sister has lined up a Compact buyer in the next region and is sick of burying electrocuted deckhands.
- Back the elder sister: step the copper mast on your ship and fly into the anvil cloud. The elder sister has the copper mast stepped and braced on your deck before nightfall. The younger sister comes aboard too, her arms tightly folded.
- [Air mage] Have crewmate study the eastern anvil cloud before you choose.Crew: Air caster · Magecrewmate studies the eastern horizon for a long minute. "It's a rich lightning storm, sure enough—but you won't have it to yourselves. Another copper-masted ship is already working inside it." Forewarned, you let the elder sister step the mast aboard.Reveal 2 waypoints
- Back the younger sister: load the copper mast as freight for her Compact buyer. The elder sister stalks off the pier without a single word. The younger sister watches her go, then turns back to the copper mast with a roll of tarred canvas slung over her shoulder.
- Leave it for now.You leave the two sisters arguing on the wharf—something they clearly have years of practice doing.
Stepping the Mast
Right away2Once the copper mast is upright on your deck, the sisters clash over how to rig the collectors. The elder wants every crystal jar she owns racked along the bulwarks with bare copper leads: more exposed metal in the air means more jars filled per strike. The younger sister insists on wrapping the leads in tarred canvas and leaving half the jars on the pier. "I've buried four deckhands rigging it her way," she warns. Neither sister will touch the other's work.
- Use the elder sister's method: wire every jar with bare leads for maximum yield. The elder sister hands you three charged crystals on account and racks forty more glass jars along your rails, making your main deck look like a glassblower's courtyard.+3 crystal
- Use the younger sister's method: insulate the leads with tarred canvas for safety. The younger sister wraps every copper lead in tarred canvas with her own hands and pays your crew fifteen silver for holding the coils steady, while her elder sister loudly counts the empty jars left behind on the pier.+15 silver
- [Gnome] Insulate the leads the younger sister's way, and have crewmate inspect the mast socket.Crew: Gnomecrewmate spots a hairline fracture in the mast step that both sisters missed and reinforces it with a heavy copper collar before the stays are tensioned. The younger sister pays fifteen silver for the work, and the elder sister—for once—actually says thank you.+15 silver+1 Repair skill XP
The Younger Sister's Terms
Right away3At thirty feet long, the copper mast will never fit below decks. "It rides on your main deck out in the weather, and copper draws lightning whether you want it to or not," the younger sister explains. "If we lash it flat under tarred canvas, it rides as safe cargo. If you step it upright and bare, it'll charge a few crystal jars on the voyage before we even reach the buyer—assuming a strike doesn't fry your deck." She holds out the shipping manifest and a quill.
- Lash the mast flat under tarred canvas as safe deck cargo. The younger sister signs the manifest and lashes the last corner of the tarpaulin down herself. "Uneventful," she says approvingly. "I like uneventful."New job: A copper storm mast
- Step the bare mast upright on deck so it charges crystal jars along the way.
- Change your mind: step the mast for storm-chasing and fly into the eastern anvil cloud. The younger sister sighs and pockets her quill. Before you even finish giving the order, the elder sister is striding back up the gangplank.
The Anvil Cloud
Sail to The Anvil Cloud (2–4 passages away)4 Fly the copper-masted ship into the eastern anvil cloud to harvest lightning.
The storm cloud towers ahead, flat-topped and ink-black. The first bolt hammers your copper mast before your bow is even fully inside the squall, setting every glass jar along the rail ringing like a bell. Seconds later, a second hull looms through the murk—another copper-masted storm-chaser whose crew regard this cloud as their private claim and are already clearing their gun ports.
- Bring your guns to bear and fight the rival storm-chasers for the cloud. As both ships trade broadsides in the thunderhead, lightning hammers down on one copper mast after the other without warning.Battle: Bounty hunters · Thunderstorm
- [Helm 2] Climb to the upper edge of the storm cloud to steal their lightning.Crew: Helm 2+crewmate hauls the your ship up the turbulent flank of the thunderhead until your copper mast towers directly above the rival vessel. Robbed of every single lightning strike, the rival chasers linger below with empty jars for an hour before giving up and bearing away.−2 hull
- Call out to the rival ship and offer to split the lightning harvest fifty-fifty.They accept half the jars—taking the fuller half for themselves—but not a single cannon shot is fired. Both ships ride the storm until the cloud is spent, leaving you with six measures of charged crystal stowed below.+6 crystal
- Leave it for now.You reverse sails and back out of the thunderhead. A storm this size will hold its ground for days yet.
The Compact Buyer
At the delivery port5 Deliver the copper storm mast to the Compact buyer in the next region.
The buyer is a gnome foundry foreman who walks the entire length of the copper mast, tapping the metal with a heavy signet ring. "Sound work," he pronounces. "We'll melt down half and study the rest." After paying the younger sister's price, he glances up at your own mainmast. "We have a heavy leadglass bottle that needs filling, and a standing lightning storm nearby that never moves. Catch a bolt in it for us, and my artificer will wire your mast just like hers—or step inside and pick something off my workbench."
- Take the empty leadglass bottle and fly into the standing storm to charge it.He packs the thumb-thick leadglass bottle in straw himself, complete with a copper-wired stopper, and pays you forty silver up front while sending a Compact artificer aboard to supervise. "Hoist it high on the pole when the bolt strikes—and don't stand too close."+40 silver
- Skip the storm and see what he has on his workbench instead. He leads you through the humming foundry floor, passing half a dozen dissected storm masts along the way.
Full Jars
Right away6Racked along your bulwarks, the crystal jars glow like a row of captured moons. The elder sister counts them twice and laughs aloud in triumph. The younger sister studies the scorched copper mast, then glances at your gun deck. "This spar is wasted on glass jars," she tells you. "Wire its copper leads straight into your gun battery, and every lightning strike will supercharge your cannons."
- Keep the copper mast and wire its leads directly into your gun battery. For the first time all voyage, the two sisters work side by side without arguing, wiring the heavy copper leads straight into your battery room. Your gunners swear the cannons have never cycled so fast.Fitting: Grounding MastUpgrade: Battery DeckThe questline ends here.
- [Gnome] Have crewmate help the younger sister wire the mast to your battery for maximum efficiency.Crew: Gnomecrewmate and the younger sister run the heavy copper leads in half the time, bickering happily over wire gauges the entire way—and leaving eight charged crystals left over when the job is finished. The questline ends here.
- Let the sisters keep their mast and take your share in silver and charged crystal. The elder sister pays you seventy-five silver and twelve measures of charged crystal before unstepping her mast to chase the next storm.+12 crystal+75 silverThe questline ends here.
- Claim your full share from the double rack of bare-wired jars. The bare leads filled half again as many jars as the elder sister hoped for—though one of your deckhands took a nasty flash-burn down his forearm from an uninsulated wire. She pays out twenty charged crystals and seventy-five silver, covering your surgeon's bill as well.+20 crystal+75 silver25 damage to a random crewmateThe questline ends here.
Half a Harvest
Right away7The rival storm-chasers lash alongside in the calm eye to divide the charged jars. Their captain, a jovial ursine, eyes your copper mast with open envy. "Our own mast is cracked at the heel. Sell me yours right now and these two sisters can stop their bickering. I'll pay them fair value, and pay you a bonus to help step it onto my deck." The elder sister snaps a refusal before he even finishes speaking; the younger sister looks at you.
- Side with the elder sister and let her keep her storm mast. The ursine captain shrugs and casts off his lines. The elder sister pays out your sixty-silver fee plus four measures of crystal from the remaining jars, then unsteps her mast at the next port to hunt storms aboard another hull.+60 silver+4 crystalThe questline ends here.
- Side with the younger sister and sell the mast to the rival captain. The elder sister stalks to the bow and refuses to look back. The ursine captain pays the sisters for their spar, hands you ninety silver for stepping it across to his deck, and unhooks the copper grounding rod from his own belt to toss you for good luck.+90 silverDevice: Grounding RodThe questline ends here.
The Proving Storm
Sail to The Proving Storm (1–3 passages away)8 Catch a lightning bolt in the Compact's bottle at the standing storm.
A permanent electrical storm crackles over a bare rock spire—hovering in the exact same spot, the artificer claims, since before the Compact foundry was built. The leadglass bottle requires one direct lightning strike down its neck. Someone has to hoist it on an insulated pole at the masthead with the wired cork ready, and time the strike to the second.
- Send a deckhand up to the masthead with the pole to catch a bolt.
- [Air mage] Have crewmate read the electrical charge in the cloud and call the exact second to hoist the bottle.Crew: Air caster · Magecrewmate watches the swirling thunderhead, counting softly under their breath, and shouts "Now!" a full second before the sky flashes. The bolt fills the bottle cleanly without a single stray spark. The Compact artificer wires your grounding mast as agreed and begs crewmate to explain the technique. The questline ends here.
- Leave it for now.The standing storm has crackled over this spire longer than the foundry has existed; it will wait another day.
The Foreman's Bench
Right away9The foreman's oak workbench stretches forty feet beneath a high skylight, and nearly every device resting on it hums with stored charge. "I appreciate a captain who delivers fragile freight without a scratch," he says. "Pick your bonus."
- Claim the bottled lightning storm from his workbench, plus your freight fee.He hands you a stoppered leadglass bottle containing a fist-sized thunderhead swirling inside, along with sixty silver for the haulage.
