The Stood-Down Battery

Sail to The Stood-Down Battery (2–4 passages away)1
Visit the decommissioned cliff battery and challenge its keeper.
Atop the sea cliff stand four empty gun emplacements and a single polished cannon tended by an old gnome gunner in a faded Guild coat. Beside him on a brass tripod sits a hatbox-sized clockwork targeting reckoner covered in dials. "The Guild decommissioned this battery six years ago and cut off my pension after two," he says. "I won't sell my targeting Reckoner for coin—but I'll wager it in a gunnery duel: three shots each at the white sea-stack a mile offshore!"
  • Accept his gunnery challenge for the clockwork Reckoner.
He chalks a firing line on the stone parapet for your deck gun beside his cannon. "Three shots apiece at the white rock a mile out—if you lose, you owe me a bottle of rum and two bolts!"
  • Offer to carry him to the Guild Court instead so he can claim his four years of back pension.
He packs in ten minutes flat—bringing his daily logbook and the brass Reckoner in its case—and locks his cannon before boarding your ship.
    New job: The battery keeper
  • Leave it for now.
You leave the cliff battery behind as the old gnome returns to oiling his cannon.

The Gunnery Duel

Right away2
A full mile offshore, a cart-sized white rock juts out of the foaming surf. The old gnome spins two dials on his brass Reckoner to account for the gusting crosswind and steps back. "Your gun crew fires first, captain. Take your best aim."
  • Have your standard gun crew fire three shots at the distant white rock.
  • [Gunner] Have your specialist gunner crewmate take the three shots.
    Crew: Gunner
crewmate and the old keeper trade pinpoint shots until the distant white rock is reduced to gravel, then spend the evening swapping long-range ballistics tips!

Listed as Dead

At the delivery port3
Carry the old battery keeper to the Guild Court port.
At the Guild Court, the pension clerk looks up the old gnome's name and frowns. "Marked deceased four years ago. A dead man can't collect a pension—especially not in person." The keeper slams six years of signed daily battery logs onto the desk, but the stubborn clerk ignores the book and looks at you.
  • Sign a sworn captain's affidavit testifying that the keeper is alive.
You sign and stamp a legal witness statement confirming the gnome standing in front of the desk is breathing; grumbling, the clerk opens the pension ledger.
    +1 The Guild standing
  • [Quartermaster] Have crewmate cite the Guild regulation requiring a surgeon's death certificate.
    Crew: Quartermaster
crewmate quotes the Guild's own bylaws proving a pensioner cannot be declared dead without a surgeon's signature—forcing the flustered clerk to reinstate the pension and refund fifteen silver in court fees!

Fairly Won

Right away4
The old gnome carries the brass targeting Reckoner down to your boarding ramp himself, though he hesitates before letting go of the case. "Six years I kept that battery ready for a Guild that forgot I existed. You won it fair and square, captain—just make sure your gunners calibrate the wind-dials every morning."
  • Mount the brass targeting Reckoner on your Battery Deck.
He bolts the clockwork Reckoner beside your guns himself and drills your gun captains on reading its dials to boost your accuracy.
    The questline ends here.
  • Invite the old master gunner to join your crew alongside the Reckoner.
Glancing back at his four empty gun pits, he grins, locks up his cliffside post for good, and comes aboard with his brass Reckoner as a veteran gunner!

    The questline ends here.
  • Let him keep his prized Reckoner in exchange for 6 bolts and intensive gunnery training for your crew.

Four Years of Back Pay

Right away5
An hour later, the old gnome walks out of the Guild Court carrying a heavy canvas sack holding four years of back pension. He blinks in the sunlight on the steps. "There's no gun left on that cliff that needs me now, captain. How would you like to settle your fee?"
  • Take his clockwork targeting Reckoner for your ship.
He bolts the clockwork Reckoner beside your guns himself and drills your gun captains on reading its dials to boost your accuracy.

  • [Battery Deck] Recruit him onto your gun deck along with his targeting Reckoner.

His eyes light up at the sight of your Battery Deck, and he gladly signs onto your crew with his brass Reckoner under his arm!

  • Take an 80-silver share of his back pension.
He counts out eighty silver from his pension bag, shakes your hand warmly, and retires in comfort with his prized Reckoner.

Paying the Wager

Right away6
He shares the bottle of rum you lost to him on the parapet. By the second glass, he admits why he stays on the cliff: "A Guild clerk stopped my pension four years ago without explanation. I won't sell my Reckoner, captain, but if you carry me to the Guild Court to claim my back pay, I'll make it worth your while."
  • Offer to carry him to the Guild Court instead so he can claim his four years of back pension.
He packs in ten minutes flat—bringing his daily logbook and the brass Reckoner in its case—and locks his cannon before boarding your ship.
    New job: The battery keeper
  • Demand a double-or-nothing rematch at dawn (-2 bolts).
    Costs 2 bolts
  • Accept the loss and depart.
He walks you to the cliff path and points out the shattered white rock. "Come back whenever your gunners want another lesson!"
    The questline ends here.
