The Glassblowers' Loft

At the delivery port1
Deliver the bale of unstamped kiln cloth.
The buyer is an emberkin glassblower whose upper loft is filled with heavy weaving looms. He holds a corner of the cloth directly in a candle flame, and the fabric doesn't even scorch. "Fireproof slag-fiber cloth," he explains. "We weave it ourselves for furnace crews, and the Guild fines us because their licensed cloth costs three times as much. Worse, last month an Excise patrol confiscated our steel heddle-bar—without it, our looms can't weave another yard."
  • Ask where the Excise took their steel heddle-bar.
"It's sitting aboard the Excise seizure hulk anchored off the point, piled up with everything else they've confiscated from this town. It's a steel bar as long as an oar—the customs clerks don't even know what it's for."
  • [Emberkin] Have crewmate inspect the fireproof weave and ask about the seized bar.
    Crew: Emberkin
He watches crewmate run bare fingers through the hot slag-cloth and smiles warmly. Welcoming kin, he tells crewmate where the Excise moored their seizure hulk and shares a round of hot spiced spirits with your whole ship.

Twelve Idle Looms

Right away2
He leads you up to the weaving loft, where twelve heavy looms stand idle with slack threads and a stack of finished fireproof aprons sits by the door. "Recover our steel heddle-bar from the Excise seizure hulk, and we'll line your ship's bulkheads with fireproof cloth," he offers. "Or if you don't want to risk boarding an Excise hulk, smuggle this last stack of finished kiln-aprons to the foundry furnace crews for us."
  • Head out to the Excise seizure hulk to recover the weavers' steel heddle-bar.
He gives you a fireproof hood and two crates of warm kiln-baked bread for the run out to the seizure hulk.

  • Inspect the official Excise seizure receipt before heading out to the hulk.
Scanning the itemized receipt, you notice forty confiscated items listed—but the steel heddle-bar isn't recorded anywhere! "They grabbed it without logging it," the glassblower realizes. On a hulk run by stickler clerks, an unlogged item is a loophole.
  • Decline the raid and smuggle the finished kiln-aprons to the furnace crews instead.
He packs the fireproof aprons beneath a top layer of ordinary sailcloth. "The foundry furnace crews will pay on the spot—they're tired of getting burned."

The Seizure Hulk

Sail to The Seizure Hulk (2–4 passages away)3
Recover the weavers' steel heddle-bar from the Excise seizure hulk.
The Excise seizure hulk is a decommissioned coal barge anchored off the point, heaped to the rails with confiscated goods under rain-soaked tarpaulins. An armed Excise cutter is moored alongside while her crew eats dinner below deck.
  • Attack the guard cutter and seize the steel heddle-bar by force!
The Excise crew abandons dinner and scrambles to their guns!

  • Point out to the hulk's inventory clerk that the steel bar was never logged on the seizure writ.
The clerk checks his ledger twice and realizes an unlogged item is an administrative headache. Glad to be rid of the discrepancy, he has two deckhands load the steel bar straight into your cargo sling!
  • [Quartermaster] Have crewmate forge an official property release form for the steel bar.
    Crew: Quartermaster
crewmate writes up a formal release voucher for "one scrap steel bar, value nil" signed with a dead magistrate's name, and the bored hulk clerk waves the bar aboard your ship.
  • [Lutrine] Send crewmate up the hulk's anchor chain in the rain to steal the bar unseen.
    Crew: Lutrine
  • Leave it for now.
You pull back from the anchored hulk for now.

The Furnace Crews

At the delivery port4
Deliver the smuggled kiln-aprons to the foundry furnace crews.
At the main foundry works, the shift boss distributes the fireproof aprons straight down the furnace line to burn-scarred stokers. "We don't earn enough to pay what these are truly worth, captain," she tells you, "but we can pass the hat for seventy silver, or give you our foundry's brass fire-alarm bell plus thirty silver."
  • Take the foundry's brass Fire Bell fitting and 30 silver.
Hung in your hold, the heavy brass Fire Bell alerts your crew the instant a blaze starts so they can extinguish it fast, and the stokers add thirty silver.

The Looms Run Again

Right away5
Return the steel heddle-bar to the glassblowers' loft.
Within an hour of bolting the steel heddle-bar back in place, the master loom is clattering at full speed. The glassblower slices off the first wide bolt of fireproof slag-cloth and holds it out to you. "Do you want us to fireproof your ship's bulkheads with this, captain, or would you rather take ninety silver from our first week's sales?"
  • Have the weavers line your ship's holds and bulkheads with fireproof Salamander Cloth.
The weavers line your bulkheads and lamp brackets with fireproof Salamander Cloth, sharply reducing fire spread aboard your ship.

  • [Emberkin] Have crewmate direct the fireproofing installation to gain repair skill and Clan standing.
    Crew: Emberkin
crewmate shows the weavers every fire-prone corner of your hull, installing the fireproof Salamander Cloth to perfection while teaching crewmate how to patch slag-fiber.
