A Stowaway in the Crate

At the delivery port1
Deliver the ventilated valve crate.
The port warehouse you were hired to deliver to is boarded shut, with two Guild debt enforcers leaning against the doorframe waiting for you. You keep the crate aboard instead—and that night, the lid pops open from the inside and a gnome engineer climbs out clutching a roll of blueprints. "I designed the crystal feed-valves for every refinery on the Shard Coast," she says. "Now the Guild claims they own my blueprints—and me with them."
  • Ask where she wants to be smuggled.
"To the independent shipyard in the next region," she says. "Get me past the Guild blockade, and I'll upgrade your ship's crystal feed or weapon gears with my own hands."
  • [Smuggler's Nook] Hide her in your Smuggler's Nook while she tunes your fuel lines (+4 crystal).
    Room: Smuggler's Nook
While tucked safely inside your Smuggler's Nook, she passes the time by adjusting your auxiliary fuel valves—saving you four units of sky-crystal before naming an independent shipyard in the next region.
    +4 crystal
  • Turn her over to the two Guild debt enforcers on the pier for an 80-silver bounty.
The enforcers pay you an eighty-silver bounty on the spot and haul the silent gnome engineer away in irons.

The Roll of Blueprints

Right away3
That night, the gnome unrolls her master blueprints across your galley table—every refinery valve on the Shard Coast, signed with her initials. "The independent shipyard in the next region will pay handsomely for these, though it's a long flight with a Guild bounty on my head," she says. "Or you can drop me off much closer at Slagside—the underground mechanics who keep the workers' boilers running there will hide me and upgrade your ship on the spot."
  • Stay on course for the independent shipyard in the next region while she copies the blueprints.
"Smart choice—I'll draw miniature copies of the best valve sheets during the flight so we can sell those to the yard master for extra silver!"
  • [Gnome] Have crewmate study her valve blueprints on the voyage to the independent shipyard.
    Crew: Gnome
crewmate and the engineer pore over the valve schematics all night, giving crewmate master-level insight into crystal drives as you sail for the next region.
    +1 Repair skill XP
  • Change course and land her with the underground mechanics at Slagside instead.
She pats her roll of blueprints. "It's closer, and those mechanics have been trying to patch my valves with scrap metal for years." She marks a hidden landing cove beneath the refinery wall.

Pursued by the Guild Cutter

Right away4
An armed Guild cutter surges out of the harbor behind you with the two soaked enforcers pointing from her bow. She's faster than your ship in open air, and a rain squall is blowing in off the sea—but the gnome engineer leans over your rail and grins. "She's running one of my mark-three crystal feeds! It chokes if you push it hard into a headwind. Tack straight into the wind and her engine will stall out!"
  • Turn around and fight the Guild cutter.
The soaked debt enforcers duck below deck as the Guild cutter opens fire!
Battle: Excise cutter · RainIf you win:+25 silver
  • Zigzag hard into the headwind until the cutter's fuel feed chokes.
  • [Helm 2] Have crewmate steer a razor-sharp zigzag into the wind to outrun the cutter untouched.
    Crew: Helm 2+
crewmate holds the sails right on the edge of the headwind, stalling the pursuing cutter in half an hour while the gnome teaches crewmate high-pressure engine tricks.

The Unstamped Shipyard

At a port in the next region5
Deliver the gnome engineer to the independent shipyard in the next region.
The independent shipyard consists of three building slips and a heavy crane—but an armed bounty hunter cutter is moored across the harbor entrance with the gnome engineer's wanted poster nailed to her mainmast. The bounty captain hails you with an easy smile: "We know who's aboard your ship, captain. Hand the gnome over and nobody's hull gets punctured."
  • Open fire on the scavenger sloop!
The bounty captain's smile vanishes as his gun ports fly open!

  • [Forged papers] Present forged crew papers identifying her as your ship's cook.

Your forged papers list her as a veteran galley cook of nine years' service; the bounty captain inspects the stamps twice and lets your ship pass into the yard.
    −1 forged papers
  • Betray her and hand her over to the bounty hunter for a 60-silver share.
Clutching her blueprints tightly, she climbs down into the bounty hunter's boat without a word while he pays you a sixty-silver finder's cut.

  • Pull back from the shipyard for now.
You hold off outside cannon range while the bounty cutter continues watching the slipway.

Slagside

Sail to The Slagside Fitters (1–3 passages away)6
Land the gnome engineer at the hidden Slagside mechanics' shop.
The Slagside workshop is a hidden lean-to built right against the warm brick wall of a massive refinery. Eleven burn-scarred mechanics stand up cheering when the gnome engineer walks in with her blueprints, handing her a grease-stained boiler suit to disguise her from Guild bounty hunters.
  • Have her and the Slagside crew install a Crystal Funnel on your Drive (+6 crystal).
Assisted by eleven eager mechanics, she rebuilds your fuel intake with a custom Crystal Funnel that periodically recycles wasted fuel, and hands you six units of saved crystal!

Paid in Work

Right away7
Choose how the gnome engineer upgrades your ship at the shipyard.
Safe inside the independent shipyard, the gnome engineer pries up your deck plates within the hour. "Your keel-drive guzzles crystal like a drunken sailor, and your gun-charging clocks are out of sync," she announces. "I have time for one major overhaul before the yard master needs this slipway back—what's your pleasure?"
  • Have her install clockwork timing gears on your Battery Deck so all weapons charge faster.
She machines a master Clockwork Escapement for your gun deck, linking every weapon aboard so they charge significantly faster.
    The questline ends here.
  • [Her small copies] Install the weapon timing gears AND sell her blueprint copies to the yard for 40 silver.
She installs the master Clockwork Escapement on your Battery Deck while selling her miniature blueprint copies to the yard master—handing you forty silver as your half!
