A Paid Dungeon Permit

Right away1
Among the floating wreckage you find a waxed leather wallet. Inside is a dungeon salvager's permit for the Cistern Stair beneath Keep Varrow, with the entry fee stamped PAID IN FULL for a party of four. Penciled on the back is a private note: "Third landing, behind the dry fountain. Do not tell Hask."
  • Keep the paid permit and copy the heading to Keep Varrow.
You also find a route sketch tucked inside the wallet and mark Keep Varrow onto your navigation chart.

  • Leave the wallet in the wreckage and move on.
You toss the wallet and its penciled note back into the drifting wreck.
    The questline ends here.

Hidden in the Wallet

Right away2
As the wind tugs at the worn leather wallet, you spot more papers tucked behind the permit: a loot-split agreement signed by four delvers—Joss, Hask, Wren, and Odd—and an unfinished letter reading: "Hask always counts the shares before we go down. If I'm late, he'll enter without me, and he doesn't know about the cache behind the third-landing fountain." You also notice the wallet's leather lining is suspiciously thick.
  • Slit open the thick leather lining to see what's sewn inside.
Sewn flat inside the lining are twenty-five silver coins left over from the permit fee—though the wind snatches the loose loot-split paper out of your hands while you count the coin.
    +25 silver
  • Hold onto the loot-split agreement and read the fine print.
Beneath the four delvers' names, Joss penciled a fifth line: "Plus a fifth share for the finder—mine. Hask not told." While you read it, the torn leather lining blows overboard in the wind, but you keep the signed share sheet.
  • [Quartermaster] Have crewmate take the wallet below deck and inspect all of it out of the wind.
    Crew: Quartermaster
crewmate carries the wallet down to the mess table, recovering both the twenty-five silver sewn into the lining and the loot-split sheet granting a fifth bonus share to whoever found the third-landing cache. crewmate keeps both.
    +25 silver

The Cistern Stair

Sail to Keep Varrow (2–4 passages away)3
Use the dead delver's permit at the Cistern Stair beneath Keep Varrow.
The gate warden at Keep Varrow inspects your permit, then glances at your crew. "Made out for a party of four, and the fee's stamped paid—that's all I care about." Sitting on the dungeon steps with their gear packs are three delvers waiting for their missing fourth partner. Their leader answers to Hask, and all three eye the dead man's wallet in your hand.
  • Use the permit to take your own crew down the Cistern Stair alone.
    Landfall: The Cistern Stair
  • Tell Hask about Joss's note on the third landing and join their delve as their fourth partner.
    Landfall: The Cistern Stair
  • Sell the paid permit to Hask's three delvers and walk away. (45 silver)

    +45 silver
    The questline ends here.
  • Leave it for now.
The gate warden shrugs as you step back; a paid permit is good today or tomorrow.

Behind the Dry Fountain

Right away4
Search behind the dry fountain on the third landing.
On the third landing, hidden behind a stone fountain that has stood dry for a century, you uncover an ancient ward-smith's workshop still covered in dust sheets. Joss had found it earlier and planned to return with a handcart—there is more loot here than your crew can haul up in a single trip.
  • Haul up the polished mirror-ward plates and a spool of silver wire.
You carry out the mirror-polished ward plates—designed to hang outside a ship's Ward Loom and reflect enemy spells back at their caster—along with thirty silver worth of wire.

    The questline ends here.
  • Take the small ward-wisp construct in its glass case along with the silver wire.
When you unlatch the glass case, the ward-wisp construct awakens, studies your crew, and floats faithfully after the sailor carrying the thirty silver worth of wire.

  • [Gnome] Have crewmate search the workbench for hidden compartments.
    Crew: Gnome
crewmate knows exactly where an old ward-smith hides his prize creations, uncovering a secret drawer holding an artificer's device while the ward-wisp construct floats up the stairs behind crewmate.
Device: a random deviceConstruct: Ward Wisp
    The questline ends here.
  • Strip all the spools of pure silver wire to sell to a hold jeweler. (90 silver)
The silver wire is light to haul up the stairs, and a hold jeweler buys the whole lot for ninety silver.
    +90 silver
    The questline ends here.

Dividing the Spoils

Right away5
Divide the salvage from the ward-smith's bench with Hask's party.
With Hask's three delvers hauling alongside your crew, you bring the entire ward-smith's workshop up the stairs in a single trip: mirror-ward plates, a glass-cased ward-wisp construct, and drawers of silver wire. Outside on the steps, Hask divides the haul into four equal piles. "The fourth share belonged to Joss. He found the cache, he's dead, and you brought his permit back to us. Pick your pile."
  • Claim the polished mirror-ward plates as your fourth share.
You claim the spell-reflecting mirror-ward plates for your ship's Ward Loom, and Hask tosses in fifteen silver worth of wire for good luck.
    Fitting: Mirror Ward+15 silver
    The questline ends here.
  • Present Joss's signed loot-split sheet to claim both the fourth share and the finder's fifth!
Hask reads Joss's penciled clause twice and lets out a bitter laugh. "That sounds just like him. Fair is fair—take the fourth and the fifth shares both." Your crew loads the mirror-ward plates aboard while the ward-wisp construct follows you up the ramp.
    Fitting: Mirror WardConstruct: Ward Wisp
    The questline ends here.
  • Pass on the equipment piles and recruit Hask into your crew instead.
With his delve party permanently short a man, Hask has had enough of dungeon stairs. He cashes out Joss's share in silver, splits thirty silver with you, and signs onto your crew as a veteran marine.
New crewmate: Hask Brand, Human, Marine+30 silver
    The questline ends here.
