The Glove Shop

At a port1
Dock at the terrace port where the assassin known as the Glover kept her shop.
For twenty years, Isaure Maelis ran a respectable glovemaker's shop on the upper terrace beneath the sign of a painted white hand. Now House Tresilian's armsmen have ransacked the place, leaving the wooden counters split in two and hand-carved leather molds scattered across the floor.

Speaking in hushed tones, the neighboring shopkeepers tell you she tailored gloves for three generations of Tresilian lords—the old lord, his son, and his young grandson.
  • Search the ransacked shop for anything House Tresilian's guards overlooked.
Beneath the splintered counter, you find a half-sewn gray kidskin glove still mounted on a wooden hand-form, a spool of wire-thread, and an overlooked pair of silver coins.

  • [Vulpine] Have crewmate eavesdrop at the neighbors' doors to hear what they won't tell a stranger.
    Crew: Vulpine
crewmate's sharp ears catch the whispered truth behind closed shutters: "She slipped down the old lamp-stair in the dead of night—and she bought two loaves of bread from the baker before leaving." For a copper coin, the baker's apprentice points out to crewmate the exact route she took.

  • Question the harbor clerk about which way her skiff departed.
Already rattled by House Tresilian's guards, the clerk repeats what he told them: a small skiff slipped out after dark toward the abandoned lamp chimneys on the freezing, shaded side of the mountain.

Outside the ruined shop, the painted sign of the white hand creaks on its iron bracket.

Tresilian Grey

Right away2
Before your ship even clears the terrace port, a House Tresilian warship painted in gray and silver drops out of the clouds alongside you, her gun ports already open. Her captain hails you through a silver speaking-horn:

"That public bounty poster was merely a polite formality for the Crown, hunter! House Tresilian will settle its own family business on the cold side of the mountain. You may trail behind us and collect a modest fee for standing by—or turn back now!"
  • Accept his terms, take the stand-by fee, and trail behind the House cutter.
Without another word, the gray cutter leads the way down the dark flank of the mountain, her purser sending across a small pouch of silver to buy your compliance and silence.

  • Insist on your right as the bounty holder and fight the House cutter for the lead.
The captain barks a curt order through his silver horn, and the gray cutter's opening broadside rips through your rigging.

The Cold Chimney

Sail to The Cold Chimney (1–3 passages away)3
Search the abandoned lamp chimneys on the mountain's freezing flank for the Glover.
Moored inside the stone mouth of an extinct lamp chimney sits a small skiff. Standing calmly on the rocky ledge is a gray-haired woman holding her empty hands open in plain view—while behind her, a twelve-year-old boy in an oversized coat tries his best to look brave.

"Your bounty poster demands me alive," Isaure calls out across the cold air. "Ask yourself why the Lord Regent wants his nephew's 'murderer' brought back breathing—and then come up here and ask me yourself."
  • Arrest her in irons as the bounty demands and bring both her and the boy aboard.
Isaure calmly holds out her wrists for your irons, and the boy follows her aboard at her quiet word. Just as you cast off from the chimney, a rival bounty hunter's brig dives out of the clouds to steal your prize.

  • Climb up to the chimney ledge peacefully and hear her story.
Calm as a master tailor receiving a customer for a fitting, Isaure brews hot tea over a small camp stove.
  • Fire a flare to signal the trailing House Tresilian cutter to come take them.
The gray House cutter swoops in immediately. Her marines arrest the older woman and—with conspicuous gentleness—escort the boy aboard. Because you merely stood by while they made the arrest, the captain pays you a reduced witness fee rather than the full bounty.

The Regent's Steward

Right away4
At the edge of the terrace port, a gray House cutter intercepts you carrying the Lord Regent's personal steward. Stepping aboard with the bounty silver in a sealed lockbox, the steward peers past the woman in your brig, his eyes darting into the shadows of your hold.

"Lord Regent Wystan thanks you, Captain. We understand a twelve-year-old servant boy was traveling with her—a nobody of zero consequence, of course, but the House wishes to take custody of him as well."
  • Hand over both the Glover and the boy to the Lord Regent's steward.
Cracking the wax seal on the lockbox with his thumb, the steward pays your bounty as the boy climbs aboard the House cutter clutching Isaure's sleeve. Within a month, House Tresilian officially declares its young heir dead and crowns his uncle, the Lord Regent, as rightful lord.

  • Hand over the Glover for the bounty, but lie and claim she was completely alone.
  • Bar the brig door and ask the boy to state his true name.
Before the steward can stop him, the boy speaks up clearly: "I am Lord Piran Tresilian, and that man works for my uncle who tried to have me killed!" Leaving his silver box behind, the steward dives back over your rail as the gray House cutter runs out her cannons.

The Question

Right away5
The twelve-year-old boy is none other than Lord Piran Tresilian—very much alive. "His uncle, the Lord Regent, ordered me to smother the boy in his sleep," Isaure explains calmly. "For twenty years I served as House Tresilian's quiet blade, but I refused to murder the old lord's grandson. That's why the Regent posted a bounty demanding me alive: he just needs to torture me for one minute to learn where I hid the boy."

"The Crown Herald sits at the summit port. If Piran stands before her in person, he will be confirmed as rightful Lord of Tresilian—and the Regent's warships are waiting between here and the summit to stop us."
  • Escort both young Lord Piran and the Glover to the Crown Herald at the summit port.
Packing her camp gear in two minutes while Piran shoulders his own bag, Isaure spends the flight up the mountain honing every cutlass in your armory to a razor edge.
    +1 Melee skill XP
  • Lock her in chains anyway to claim the Regent's bounty.
Isaure sighs and holds out her wrists for the shackles. "Then the boy must come into the brig with me—he'll freeze to death if left on this ledge alone." As you cast off from the chimney, a rival bounty hunter's brig dives out of the clouds to steal your prize.

  • Signal the Lord Regent by heliograph and sell him the boy's hiding place.
You flash a single message up the mountain by signal lamp. Within the hour, a courier arrives with a purse far heavier than the posted bounty while a gray House cutter descends on the chimney—and the next morning, the bounty notice is quietly taken down.

The Herald's Stair

At a port6
Escort the young heir Piran Tresilian to the Crown Herald at the summit port.
At the summit port, a grand flight of stone steps leads directly from the pier up to the bronze doors of the Crown Herald's chamber. Blocking the foot of the staircase sits the Lord Regent's personal white-and-gold warship with her gun ports open, while Lord Wystan himself stands at her rail dressed in mourning black for his 'murdered' nephew.

Right across from him on your foredeck stands young Piran Tresilian in his oversized coat, with the Glover standing one protective pace behind his shoulder.
  • Blast your way past the Regent's warship to land Piran at the foot of the stairs.
Without waiting for a formal hail, the Lord Regent orders his warship's arcane lances to open fire across the harbor quay.

  • [Noble-born] Have crewmate invoke the ancient Peace of the Herald across the harbor quay.
    Crew: Noble
In a ringing aristocratic voice, crewmate invokes the ancient law forbidding any noble house from shedding blood before the Herald's threshold. As the bronze doors swing open above, the Regent dares not fire a shot—forced to bow in humiliation as his living nephew walks up the stairs past him.

Lord of Tresilian

Right away7
In a six-line proclamation, the Crown Herald confirms twelve-year-old Piran Tresilian as the rightful Lord of his House while his disgraced uncle is escorted into custody. The bounty on the Glover is immediately expunged—signed off by the very boy she was accused of murdering.

Rolling up his coat sleeves, the young lord walks down the stone steps to your gangway. "House Tresilian owes you its survival, Captain, and Isaure says she owes you a personal debt as well. Name your reward."
  • Accept House Tresilian's noble pennant and a purse of silver.
Young Lord Piran ties his House's gray-and-silver pennant to your halyard with his own hands while his steward counts out fifty silver—giving your ship privileged standing at every Crown port.

  • Ask the Glover to teach your helm officer her twenty years of covert escape routes.
Isaure spends the evening with your helm officer over the mountain charts, marking every blind terrace, shadow lane, and hidden draft she used in twenty years as a house operative—allowing your ship to disengage from combat in half the normal time.

  • Invite the veteran assassin Isaure Maelis to join your crew.
