The Salle on the Quay

At a port1
Dock at the port where Yselle Corvane runs her fencing academy.
Yselle Corvane's fencing salle occupies a long loft above a sailmaker's shop, with a white chalk line drawn down the center of the floorboards and practice foils racked beside the door. Without their swordmistress, her students are drilling clumsily.

Speaking over one another, the students tell you Corvane departed last night aboard a noblewoman's yacht—insisting that young Ostrander lunged illegally before the referee gave the word to begin.
  • Inspect the official witness log of the duel at the harbor master's office.
Every formal duel fought on a Charter pier is recorded in the harbor logbook. Two independent witnesses signed the entry confirming that Lord Ostrander's son lunged before the starting signal, and that Corvane killed him in a single clean counter-thrust. For a few coins, the clerk gives you a certified copy of the page and marks the heading of the noblewoman's yacht.

  • [Duelist] Have crewmate spar a few friendly bouts with Corvane's senior student.
    Crew: Duelist
crewmate wins three bouts cleanly and tactfully lets the student win the fourth. Impressed, the students confide that Corvane sailed aboard Lady Ondine's yacht—now becalmed off the headland—and demonstrate Corvane's signature parry for crewmate.

  • Question the students about which yacht she boarded and what heading she took.
Talking all at once, the students tell you she boarded Lady Ondine's white-and-green yacht bound for the windless headland.

  • Leave it for now.
You leave the loft while the students continue practicing along the chalk line.

Lord Ostrander's Other Hunter

Right away2
Blocking the harbor entrance sits a rival bounty hunter's brig, and a rowboat pulls alongside your hull carrying a well-dressed man wearing three gold rings: Tibalt Brandt.

"We both hold Lord Ostrander's bounty poster, Captain—except his lordship's vengeful daughter has also hired me on the side, and she doesn't want Corvane brought back alive. Let's make this simple: take a quarter-share of my payout right now, locate the yacht for me, and look the other way when my brig moves in. Otherwise, we can settle our disagreement right here in the harbor mouth."
  • Reject his deal and fight his brig to clear the harbor entrance.
Brandt sighs and signals his warship. Though he is a smoother talker than a commander, he has hired veteran gunners.

  • Accept Brandt's advance silver and let his brig shadow you to the yacht.
Bowing from his boat, Brandt passes up a pouch of silver as an advance on your quarter-share so you cannot claim you weren't bought.

  • [Helm 2] Have crewmate slip through the narrow inshore channel behind the breakwater to leave Brandt behind.

crewmate threads your ship through a hidden gap behind the harbor breakwater that local pilots charge extra to reveal, leaving Brandt's brig still weighing anchor as you round the headland out of sight.

The Becalmed Yacht

Sail to The Becalmed Yacht (1–3 passages away)3
Locate Lady Ondine's yacht stuck without wind near the headland.
Painted white with a green stripe, Lady Ondine's pleasure yacht floats motionless in a dead calm with her sails hanging limp. On her foredeck, a woman in shirtsleeves is practicing sword forms alone, her steel blade flashing in the sun.

Spotting your ship, Yselle Corvane walks to the rail. "You're here on Ostrander's bounty, I take it. Come aboard alone, Captain, and we can settle my fate like civilized people—or open fire on the yacht and discover how well Lady Ondine's gun crews shoot."
  • Open fire and take the yacht by force.
Lady Ondine's yacht runs out a full battery of well-drilled guns—and in a dead calm, neither ship can maneuver away.

  • Row over to the yacht alone to talk terms with Corvane.
While Lady Ondine pours herself a glass of wine to watch the entertainment, Corvane perches on the rail wiping down her blade.
  • Wait for Brandt's brig to grapple the yacht, then ambush him from behind while his boarders are busy.
Rounding the headland within the hour, Brandt's brig grapples directly onto the yacht—and while his boarding party is busy discovering why Corvane is the deadliest swordswoman on the coast, you rake his undefended stern.

  • Leave it for now.
You hold your distance while the dead calm—and Corvane—wait.

Alive, as Posted

Right away4
Sitting calmly in your brig with her wrists crossed, Corvane shows no fear. "Lord Ostrander wants me brought back alive for the exact same reason his foolish son challenged me on the pier: he wants a crowd to watch a swordsman of his house cut me down. Except he knows no single duelist can beat me—so when that courtyard gate locks behind me, there will be six of his guards waiting with drawn blades."

She shrugs lightly. "Still, it's your bounty poster, Captain."
  • Deliver Corvane alive to Lord Ostrander's estate and collect the bounty.
Lord Ostrander's steward pays your silver at the courtyard gate before locking it behind her. A week later, word spreads through port that Ostrander sent six guards against her at once—and that she killed four of them before falling, leaving his disgraced lordship too ashamed to show his face in public.

  • Deliver Corvane for the bounty, but nail the certified witness record of the duel to Ostrander's front gate.
As the steward pays your bounty, you nail the harbor master's witness log right to the estate gate where the entire street can read that Ostrander's son lunged before the signal. Forced by arriving Guild magistrates to hold a public hearing instead of a courtyard ambush, a furious Lord Ostrander has no choice but to let Corvane walk free.

Her Terms

Right away5
"One friendly bout to first blood right here on deck, with Lady Ondine as referee," Corvane proposes, testing her rapier's point against her thumb. "If your champion draws first blood, I will walk into your brig voluntarily and face Lord Ostrander with a smile. If I win, you carry me safely to the next port and report that you never found this yacht."

She lowers her blade slightly. "Or we can skip the bout altogether and you can simply grant me passage. I'm forty-one years old, Captain—for once, I wouldn't mind being carried somewhere without having to cross swords first."
  • [Duelist] Have crewmate duel Corvane to first blood.
    Crew: Duelist
  • Fight the bout yourself.
  • Skip the duel and grant her safe passage to the next port.
Corvane slides her rapier into its scabbard for the first time since you arrived. Kissing her on both cheeks, Lady Ondine hands you twenty silver to cover her friend's mess bill—along with a pointed warning to keep her safe.

  • Show Corvane your certified copy of the harbor master's duel log.
Corvane reads the witness testimony twice in quiet wonder. "Someone actually recorded the truth—I didn't think anyone on the pier would dare." Folding the document into her coat while Lady Ondine pays her passage fare, she nods toward the horizon: "There is an honest magistrate at the next port who needs to read this page with me standing beside it."

The Harbour Mouth

At a port6
Carry the duelist Yselle Corvane safely to the next port.
Distrusting hired bounty hunters, Lord Ostrander sent his own household warship ahead of you: blocking the entrance to the next port sits a black-and-gold cutter with his mourning-clad daughter standing on the quarterdeck, a drawn sword in her hand.

"Heave to, Captain!" she calls across the water. "You are carrying a posted fugitive! Put Yselle Corvane into my boat for a finder's fee, or I will sink you as an accomplice to murder!"

Beside you at the rail, Corvane waits silently for your command.
  • Run out your cannons and fight past the household cutter to protect your passenger.
The black-and-gold cutter fires the first broadside—an act of aggression inside harbor waters that the port battery carefully records in its log.
Battle: Household ship · Close rangeIf you win:+30 silver
  • Send a skiff ashore to deliver the certified duel log to the port magistrate.
Hurrying down to the pier in his nightcap, the magistrate reads the certified witness log under a lantern and immediately orders the harbor chain raised behind the black-and-gold cutter. "The boy lunged before the signal! This bounty warrant is null and void in my jurisdiction!" Ostrander's daughter is rowed ashore in disgrace to answer for her illegal blockade.

  • Betray Corvane: hand her over to Ostrander's daughter for the finder's fee.
Climbing into the rowboat without assistance, Corvane sits facing aft and fixes her eyes on you all the way across the water. Claiming you merely surrendered a passenger rather than fulfilling the formal bounty, Ostrander's steward pays you a paltry thirty-silver finder's fee.

What She Owes

Right away7
Standing on the pier beside her sea chest without a bounty on her head for the first time in a month, Yselle Corvane looks ten years younger.

"I pay my debts, Captain. I can give you what silver I have left, or I can spend a week drilling your crew until they handle cutlasses like master fencers. Or—if you have a berth open—I can sign onto your ship. I spent twenty years teaching pampered noblemen's sons how to posture with foils; I'd like to see what working sailors can do with real steel."
  • Have Corvane spend a week drilling your crew in swordsmanship.
Starting at dawn each day with wooden staves before moving to live steel, Corvane drills your sailors relentlessly on the foredeck—until your greenest deckhand can disarm a veteran marine, and she leaves her set of masterwork blades in your armory rack.

  • Invite master duelist Yselle Corvane to join your crew.
Corvane hangs her rapier beside the mess table within easy reach. On her first night aboard, a sailor asks her what really happened with young Ostrander; she tells the plain truth from start to finish, and no one ever needs to ask again.
