The Copyist's Shop

At a port1
Inquire after the patent thief Anselm Rook at the port where he last copied his blueprints.
The dockside drafting clerk remembers Anselm Rook clearly. "He paid for six clean copies of a ward-shuttle blueprint and chartered a fast sloop this morning. I told the other bounty hunter the exact same thing." She nods across the street toward a man in a long duster coat leaning in a tavern doorway, watching your ship.
  • Cast off immediately and pursue Rook's chartered sloop.
The rival hunter calmly finishes his drink in the tavern doorway before heading to his own ship to follow you.
  • [Quartermaster] Have crewmate bribe the clerk for a look at her delivery log before you sail.
    Crew: Quartermaster
crewmate slips the clerk a few coins to check the order book, discovering that Rook had his extra copies addressed to an isolated mooring rock rather than a port—giving you a direct shortcut to his hiding spot.

  • Cross the street and speak with the rival bounty hunter.
He steps aside to offer you a seat in the tavern. "Lorcan Ashby, captain of the Fair Warrant. Sit down, Captain—otherwise one of us is going to walk away empty-handed."

Into the Forge-Smoke

Right away2
Rook's chartered sloop has a four-hour lead. Past the last fortress, she dives straight into a dense bank of industrial forge-smoke, where swirling cinders from the giant smelter flues can easily hide a small hull—or scorch a pursuing ship.
  • Plunge straight into the burning forge-smoke to stay on her tail.
  • [Helm 2] Have crewmate fly above the smoke layer and track the sloop's wake from the clear air.
    Crew: Helm 2+
crewmate climbs into the clear sky above the smelter flues and tracks the furrow of the sloop's wake through the cloud tops, cutting her off as she emerges.
    +1 Helm skill XP
  • Use the clerk's delivery address to fly around the smoke and cut Rook off at the mooring rock.
Bypassing the hazardous smoke bank entirely, you arrive at the mooring rock in clean air before Rook's sloop even finishes navigating the cinders.

Lorcan Ashby

Right away3
Ashby is calm, polite, and all business. "The Guild pays the same bounty for Rook dead or alive, so long as the blueprints are recovered. I propose we hunt him together and split the reward fifty-fifty. Or you can claim the bounty for yourself, and we'll settle right outside the harbor whose ship is faster."
  • Agree to partner with Ashby and split the bounty fifty-fifty.
Ashby shakes your hand firmly and shares his notes on the sloop's heading. "The Fair Warrant will fly on your wing, Captain. Let's not keep him waiting."

  • Reject his partnership and fight the Fair Warrant outside the harbor.
Ashby sighs, pays his tavern tab, and walks unhurriedly to his ship. One minute after you clear the dock, the Fair Warrant sails out with her cannons blazing.

The Copy Rock

Sail to The Copy Rock (1–2 passages away)4
Corner Rook's chartered sloop at the mooring rock.
Rook's sloop is moored beneath a rock overhang with a hired corsair ship guarding the approach. On the sloop's deck, a thin young drafter holds a roll of blueprints over a lit brazier. "I'm Anselm Rook! I drafted these ward-shuttle plans when I was fourteen under indenture, and the Guild bought my life's work from my master for a keg of nails! Come any closer and I burn the originals—or board alone and hear me out!"
  • Attack the corsair guard—Rook won't dare burn his own life's work.
As predicted, Rook pulls his drawings back from the fire as his hired corsair charges in to fight you—while Lorcan Ashby's Fair Warrant closes in fast from behind to steal your prize!

  • Attack the corsair guard and seize the sloop while Ashby is still stuck in port.

  • Signal your partner Ashby to cripple the corsair guard while you move in on the sloop.
The Fair Warrant rakes the corsair with a heavy broadside on her first pass, leaving the battered guard ship for you to finish off.

  • Hold your fire and row across to hear Rook's offer.
Rook lowers the rolled blueprints an inch away from the brazier flames and waits for you to sit down.
  • Leave it for now.
You hold your distance while the brazier crackles beneath the rock overhang.

Prisoner in the Hold

Right away5
Rook sits bound on a crate in your cargo hold with the rolled blueprints beside him. "The Guild's bounty agent waits at a picket station an hour from here," he says quietly. "He'll pay you full silver for me and lock me in a private Guild cellar where no judge will ever hear my case." Up on deck, your helmsman awaits your course.
  • Deliver Rook and his blueprints to the Guild station for the full bounty.
The Guild agent at the picket station counts the blueprints before even glancing at Rook. He pays out the full bounty and marches the young inventor off to an unmarked cell.

  • Deliver Rook to the Guild station and split the bounty evenly with Lorcan Ashby.

The Inventor's Plea

Right away6
Up close, Rook is exhausted, his cuffs stained with drafting chalk. "Under Compact law, an indentured apprentice legally owns half of any invention he creates. If I reach the patent court alive with these original drawings, the judges will void the Guild's monopoly. That's why the Guild posted me dead or alive." He rolls the blueprints tight. "Escort me to the patent court, and I'll build the first licensed ward-shuttle directly into your ship's Ward Loom."
  • Accept Rook's deal and escort him to the Compact patent court.
Rook boards your ship with the blueprints tucked inside his coat. Less than an hour out, an armed Guild patrol cutter intercepts your bow, ordering you to surrender your passenger immediately.

  • Refuse his deal—attack his corsair guard and capture Rook for the Guild bounty.

The Indenture Clause

At a port7
Escort Anselm Rook and his original blueprints to the Compact patent court.
The Compact registrars examine Rook's old indenture contract, the Guild's bill of sale, and the fourteen-year-old boy's signature in the corner of the original blueprints. "Under Compact law, half the patent belongs to the creator," the chief registrar rules. "The Guild's exclusive claim is void, and they must pay him licensing fees like anyone else." Outside on the court steps, Rook sits down weak-kneed with relief.
  • Hold Rook to his promise and have him build a high-speed ward-shuttle for your ship.
Working for a week at a borrowed workshop, Rook builds a custom precision shuttle into your Ward Loom that weaves protective ward layers significantly faster in combat.
    The questline ends here.
  • Take a cash share of Rook's first patent licensing fees instead.
The first workshop to license Rook's design pays out that very afternoon. Rook counts out your silver share twice, and word of your fair dealing spreads through every workshop in the Cogholds.
