A Captain With No Ship

Sail to The Dead Tree Shoal (2–4 passages away)1
Search for the Brass Petrel at the mud shoal named on the bounty poster.
The shoal named on the bounty poster is a bleak hump of mud and stone crowned by a single dead tree. There is no pirate sloop moored here—only a lone woman standing beside a wrecked skiff, waving a red kerchief. "I'm Catrin Corran!" she shouts across the water. "I can see the bounty poster in your hand from here. My first mate threw me overboard nine days ago. He has the Brass Petrel now—and he's the one who raided those last barges!"
  • Put her in chains anyway—her name is the one on the bounty poster.
She holds out her wrists before your marines even reach for the shackles. "Rudd will be delighted to hear how cheap I went." Your crew have barely locked the irons when a sail crests the tall reeds.
  • Bring her aboard unshackled, give her a hot meal, and hear her story.
She climbs your boarding ladder slowly, one hand pressed to her bruised ribs, asking only for fresh water. Over a bowl of hot stew in your galley, she tells you the rest.
  • [Surgeon] Have crewmate treat her injuries before questioning her.
    Crew: Surgeon
crewmate diagnoses marsh fever and a cracked rib that Corran tried to splint by hand. With hot broth in her belly and her ribs properly bound, she gives you a far clearer account of the raids than the Guild poster ever did.

  • Leave her stranded on the mud shoal—a pirate captain without a ship isn't worth the trouble.
She watches your ship come about, then sits back down beneath the dead tree to wait for the next passing sail.

The Hunter Over the Reeds

Right away2
The approaching sail belongs to a rival bounty cutter, the Fair Reckoning, which has been staking out this shoal longer than you have. Her captain, Dov Kessler, hails you across the channel. "That's my quarry you've got in irons! Hand her over, and I'll toss you a few coins for hauling her off the mud."

From your deck, Corran mutters under her breath: "My mutinous mate Rudd Lowry is raiding from the old stone weir right now. My name is on the poster, but his hold is the one stacked with Guild plunder."
  • Run out your cannons and fight the Fair Reckoning to keep your prisoner.
Kessler shrugs from his quarterdeck as all his gun ports slam open at once.

  • [Gunner] Have crewmate answer Kessler's demand by putting a cannonball through his bow.
    Crew: Gunner
crewmate puts an iron round right through the cutter's bow chaser while Kessler is still shouting through his speaking trumpet. The Fair Reckoning charges in regardless—one gun short and boiling mad.

  • Accept Kessler's small payout, hand Corran over, and go hunt the Brass Petrel yourself.
Kessler swings ten silver coins across in a canvas bucket, and Corran steps onto his deck without a word to either of you. Now you have the coordinates to the old stone weir—and the pirate ship hiding behind it.

Nine Days on a Shoal

Right away3
Corran eats like someone who has counted every mouthful for a week. "I robbed Guild strongboxes, sure—but I never touched a family barge. My mate, Rudd Lowry, called me soft for it, and most of the crew backed him." She wipes her bowl clean with a crust of bread. "He hides the Petrel below the old stone weir between raids. Put me alongside her rail, and half the hands will remember who their real captain is. There's a full strongbox in the cabin—you won't walk away empty-handed."
  • Agree to help her retake the Brass Petrel and have her chart the route to the weir.
She sketches the winding reed channels from memory, shading in the pockets of foul marsh gas. "Lowry only posts a single lookout—and the man drinks on watch."

  • [Quartermaster] Have crewmate draw up a binding contract for one-third of the strongbox.
    Crew: Quartermaster
crewmate writes out the salvage terms on the blank back of Corran's own bounty poster, making her laugh for the first time. She signs her name with a flourish and marks the hidden weir on your chart.

  • Tell her a sad story doesn't change the bounty poster, and put her in chains.
She calmly finishes her last bite of bread before holding out her wrists. "Then you'd better move fast, Captain. You weren't the only bounty hunter reading posters this week." Out beyond the reeds, a topsail is closing fast.

At a port4
Deliver Catrin Corran to a Guild weigh-house to claim the bounty.
The Guild factor checks Corran's face against the bounty poster feature by feature, like a clerk inspecting a crate against a bill of lading. "Six plundered barges," he mutters. Corran says nothing. He dips his quill in ink. "Delivered alive. Good—the Guild masters enjoy a public trial."
  • Sign the receipt and collect the posted bounty on Corran.
He counts out the bounty silver twice. Flanked by two armed guards, Corran is marched up the weigh-house steps without once looking back.

  • Collect the bounty on Corran, and warn the factor that her mutinous mate Rudd Lowry is still raiding from the weir.
He scribbles rapidly in his ledger. "Then locking her up won't stop the attacks on our barges." Since the poster bears Corran's name, he pays her bounty in full—and adds fifteen silver as an intelligence fee for Lowry's hiding place.

  • Collect the bounty, but testify on Corran's behalf that she helped you crush the real raiders.
The Guild factor writes your testimony down carefully. "It won't keep her out of a cell, Captain, but it should save her neck from the noose." He pays out the full bounty while a cluster of Lowborn dockworkers watch you count the silver.

Under the Old Weir

Sail to The Old Weir (1–3 passages away)5
Hunt down the Brass Petrel at her hiding spot below the old stone weir.
A crumbling wall of dressed stone spans a half-dry riverbed, and the Brass Petrel lies moored in its deep shadow with all her lanterns dark. A captured grain barge is lashed to her port beam. On the Petrel's quarterdeck, a man is barking orders in a voice that expects instant obedience, while the barge's civilian family sits lined up on the mudbank with their hands laced behind their heads.
  • Run out your cannons and attack the Brass Petrel immediately.
Caught off guard, the Brass Petrel hacks through the grain barge's towlines and lunges out from beneath the stone wall, short-handed and firing wildly.

  • Bring Corran to the bow rail and let her call out to her old crew before you fire.
Standing tall at your bow rail, Corran shouts six sailors' names across the water. Four of the mutineers immediately drop their gunners' matches and duck below decks. Screaming curses at their backs, Rudd Lowry fires the remaining cannons himself.

  • Leave it for now.
The Brass Petrel isn't going anywhere tonight; Lowry still thinks his hiding place at the weir is a secret.

The Petrel's Quarterdeck

Right away6
Battered into submission, the Brass Petrel has surrendered. Mutineer captain Rudd Lowry lies groaning on the deck with a heavy wood splinter through his thigh, while the freed barge family wastes no time poling their grain boat clear. Inside the Petrel's cabin sit a heavy strongbox, a locked weapons rack, and Lowry's logbook—recording every barge he plundered and what he did to their crews.
  • Accept Corran's reward from the arms rack and let her sail free aboard her reclaimed ship.
Corran unlocks the weapons rack before touching the strongbox. "Silver you can find in any port." She outfits your boarding party with a matched set of Coast-steel cutlasses, and by nightfall the Brass Petrel lifts off from the weir with her rightful captain back at the helm.

  • Hold Corran to your written contract for one-third of the strongbox.
She counts out your ninety-five silver share to the last coin—then tosses Rudd Lowry's personal coin purse on top for the sheer pleasure of it. "Tell the Guild the reed lanes are safe again. I'll take my living from waters that can afford me."

  • Betray Corran: put her back in chains now that her ship is taken, and claim the Guild bounty.
With her loyalists below decks and your armed marines holding the rail, she sees the trap at once. Slowly, she holds out her wrists for the shackles. "I should have asked your price up front," she says coldly.

  • Send the mutineer Rudd Lowry and his logbook to the Guild aboard the freed family's grain barge.
