The Lightning-Struck Skiff

Right away1
A small skiff drifts past with its mast split and blackened by lightning. Its lone sailor sits frozen on the bench, gripping a copper circlet in both hands. "This thing called the bolt down," he whispers. "I only put it on as a joke."
  • Bring the sailor and his copper circlet aboard.
He refuses to let go of the copper circlet, but eagerly joins your crew. He explains that he took it from a weather tower in the next region—and that two more circlets are still sitting on a shelf there.
    New crewmate: Rigger
  • Buy the copper circlet from him for 30 silver.
    Costs 30 silver
He hands the circlet over like a man dropping a hot skillet and gladly tells you which weather tower he stole it from.
  • Give him a cask of water and fly on.
He nods his thanks without looking up as your ship pulls away.

The Stolen Circlet

Right away2
Once fed and dry, the sailor admits the whole story. He worked as the weather tower's supply hand, took the copper circlet off a shelf on a whim, and rowed out to test it—bringing a lightning bolt straight down on his mast. "The tower keeper will have a loaded crossbow aimed at the door by now, and I can't blame her."
  • Have him chart the safest flight lanes to the weather tower.
Having hauled supplies to that rock for six years, he draws the approach lanes from memory and marks every pocket of turbulent air.

  • Order him to return the stolen circlet to the keeper himself.
He stares at the copper circlet for a long moment, then nods. Every evening on the voyage there, he polishes the metal with his sleeve.

Humming in the Hold

Right away3
Lying on your chart table, the copper circlet refuses to stay quiet. It ticks near the compass and hums near the Ward Loom. Toward dusk, as a squall builds on the horizon, it begins to ring with a high, thin note that makes every hair on your arms stand on end.
  • Lash the circlet to the masthead to see how it reacts to the squall.
  • Lock the circlet inside a lead-lined powder chest.
It hums faintly inside the lead chest all night, muffled enough that your crew can finally sleep.

The Weather Tower

Sail to The Weather Tower in the next region4
Locate the weather tower in the next region where the copper circlet was made.
The weather tower perches on a lonely spire, its door hanging open. Inside, two more copper circlets sit on a shelf, and an exhausted keeper levels a crossbow at your chest. "They sing whenever a storm rolls in, and I've had enough of their singing!"
  • Offer to take the noisy circlets off her hands.
"Take them where?" She lowers the crossbow an inch. "They're meant to be lashed to a masthead and tuned inside a live tempest. There's a permanent storm cell east of here—fly one through that and it's yours to keep."
  • [Air mage] Examine the circlets' enchantment.
    Crew: Air caster · Mage
crewmate picks up a circlet and goes pale. "It isn't calling lightning down—it's built to deflect strikes away from a hull once it's attuned." Impressed, the keeper lowers her crossbow and marks a permanent storm cell on your chart.

  • Send the skiff sailor up the path to return the stolen circlet and apologize.
She doesn't shoot him. After a long talk in the doorway, he walks back down with an uncracked circlet, her chart to a permanent storm cell where you can tune it, and a look of relief.

  • Attack the keeper and seize all three circlets by force.
She fires her crossbow—striking one of your crew—and blows a brass signal horn. Her brother's bounty hunter ship is moored right behind the rock and moves in to attack!

The Standing Storm

Sail to The Standing Storm (2–4 passages away)5
Fly into the Standing Storm to tune the copper circlet.
The stationary tempest churns like a millwheel. With the circlet lashed to your masthead, lightning bolts bend toward the ship and veer away—but a massive stormray has been drawn by the charged copper, and it isn't veering off!
  • Hold your course in the storm and fight the stormray.
Drawn by the singing copper, a crackling stormray lunges out of the thunderclouds!

  • [Helm 2] Thread the eye of the storm to lose the beast.
    Crew: Helm 2+
crewmate dives straight through the narrow eye of the storm cell. The pursuing stormray overshoots into a wall of lightning and breaks off, though the gale batters your hull.

  • Pull back from the storm for now.
You come about into calmer air. The standing storm never moves; it will be waiting when you're ready.

Three Copper Circlets

At a port6
Find a black-market buyer in port for the stolen circlets.
Untuned, the three circlets are a hazard aboard ship, spitting wild sparks at the rigging whenever clouds gather. At the docks, a Free Captains' agent recognizes the weather-craft and offers to take them.
  • Sell all three circlets to the Free Captains' agent.
She pays you a heavy purse of silver and doesn't ask what happened to the tower keeper.

crewmate uses the agent's workshop overnight, wiring one circlet into a Stormcaller cannon for your gun deck and trading the other two circlets for the parts.

The Storm Crown

Right away7
Retrieve the attuned circlet from the masthead.
Struck by lightning on the masthead, the copper circlet has turned pale silver-white and icy cold to the touch. Around your ship, the storm winds fall eerily calm.
  • Permanently mount the Storm Crown on your masthead to deflect lightning.
Bolted to your mainmast, the white-hot copper crown turns lightning strikes harmlessly aside.
    The questline ends here.
  • Wire the attuned circlet into a Stormcaller cannon for your gun deck.
Your gunners wire the attuned circlet into a spare cannon barrel. Its first test shot cracks like a thunderbolt.
