Gallery Nine

Sail to The Mouth of Gallery Nine (2–5 passages away)1
Investigate the flooded mine tunnel at Gallery Nine.
The mine entrance opens into the sea cliff just above the crashing surf, with a wooden sign nailed across the timbers: CLOSED BY ORDER. Seawater surges out of the tunnel mouth in rhythmic pulses, like giant breaths, driven by something mechanical deep underground.
  • Land and explore the ruined foundry.
    Landfall: Gallery Nine
  • [Water mage] Have crewmate calm the surging water so you can enter safely.
    Crew: Water caster · Mage
crewmate walks into the tunnel with one hand pressed to the wet rock, forcing the rhythmic surges to subside until the tunnel drains. Pale from the effort, crewmate waves you inside.

  • Report the pulsing water to the mine office up on the cliff first.
The mine clerk pays you twenty-five silver for the inspection report, and the pit foreman immediately grabs his lamp and summons his pump crew to accompany you.

  • Leave it for now.
You pull away from the cliff face as another rhythmic wave of seawater surges from the tunnel mouth.

The Tide Engine

Right away2
Decide what to do with the ancient bronze tide-engine in Gallery Nine.
At the back of the mine tunnel sits a barrel-sized bronze sphere resting on a stone cradle—an ancient Old Kingdom relic that the miners accidentally broke through to. The sphere is rhythmically drawing seawater up from the deep and blasting it down the tunnel. Arriving behind you with his lamp, the pit foreman eyes the relic: "Either winch that thing out of my mine—a gunfounder in the next region can turn it into a deck cannon—or help me reverse its valve so it pumps my mine dry!"
  • Winch the bronze sphere aboard your ship to have it refitted into a deck weapon.
It takes your cargo winch and most of the day to haul the heavy bronze sphere out of the tunnel. The foreman gives you the address of an emberkin gunfounder in the next region who works with Old Kingdom bronze.
  • Sell the sphere to the foreman for 100 silver total if you help him set it to pump the mine dry.
He pays you fifty silver upfront from the mine chest. "You'll get the other fifty once we stop it from sucking seawater in!"

The Mine Pump Crew

Right away3
The pit foreman meets you at the tunnel entrance with six miners, a heavy hand-pump on a sled, and oil lamps. "I boarded this gallery shut because I wouldn't send men in to drown," he says, watching seawater surge over the sill. "If your crew is going in to stop whatever's flooding my mine, my pump-hands are coming with you—and we'll split whatever we find at the back."
  • Let the mine's pump crew lead the way and shore up the tunnel.
Pumping water and setting timber props yard by yard, the veteran miners weather two violent surges in the dark and bring your crew safely to the back of the gallery.
  • Take the foreman's tunnel map and lead the advance yourself.
Your crew takes a minor bruising from loose rock along the ceiling, but the miners behind you gather four units of dropped sky-crystal from the floor as your share.

  • [Water mage] Have crewmate part the floodwater ahead of the miners.
    Crew: Water caster · Mage
crewmate walks at the head of the column, pressing the surging seawater flat against the tunnel floor so the miners don't have to pump a single stroke. Grateful, one of them shares his rations with crewmate.

The Drained Gallery

Right away4
With the bronze tide-engine winched aboard your ship, the flooded tunnel drains completely—exposing a glittering vein of sky-crystal and a full tub of cut ore abandoned when the miners fled. The foreman eyes the salt-rotted ceiling timbers. "That crystal tub is mine property, captain, though I'd never have reached it without you—and I need hands to replace these rotten roof props before the ceiling caves in."
  • Split the tub of cut sky-crystal evenly with the foreman (6 crystal).
He divides the crystal fairly by eye, loading six pure sky-crystals into your cargo net.
    +6 crystal
  • Have your crew spend the day setting new roof timbers in exchange for a voucher to the gunfounder.
Your crew works until nightfall shoring up the tunnel roof. In thanks, the foreman writes a personal voucher to the gunfounder in the next region: "She owes me for a boiler—show her this and she'll mount that bronze gun for free."

  • [Stone mage] Have crewmate raise stone pillars to support the roof for all 8 crystal AND the voucher.
    Crew: Stone caster · Mage
crewmate raises six solid stone pillars from the tunnel floor in minutes. Amazed, the foreman gives you the entire tub of eight sky-crystals plus his personal voucher to the gunfounder!

One-Way Valve

Right away5
The foreman's crew drags the bronze sphere to the drainage sump at the tunnel mouth, where it continues to suck seawater in on every second beat. "A pump that drinks as much water as it expels is useless," his mechanic mutters. "There has to be a valve on this bronze casing to lock it into outward flow only."
  • Wedge the cradle and rotate the heavy bronze sphere by hand.
  • [Water mage] Have crewmate command the water-spirit bound inside the bronze sphere.
    Crew: Water caster · Mage
crewmate presses a hand against the ancient bronze and commands the bound tide-magic to push outward only, draining the sump effortlessly.

  • [Gnome] Have crewmate locate and turn the corroded check-valve.
    Crew: Gnome
crewmate scrapes away the green verdigris, rotates a hidden check-valve a quarter-turn, and extracts five surplus sky-crystals from an auxiliary chamber while the mine pumps dry!

The Gunfounder

At a port in the next region6
Take the bronze tide-engine to the gunfounder in the next region.
The gunfounder is a veteran emberkin artificer with burn-scarred forearms. She circles the ancient bronze sphere twice and raps it with a wrench. "Old Kingdom siege work—somebody only converted it into a water pump later. I can forge a breech and barrel onto it to build a Deep Tide Lobber for your deck: it fires high-pressure water spheres that strip enemy ship wards like wet paper."
  • Pay 40 silver to have her forge the Deep Tide Lobber cannon.
    Costs 40 silver
After four days of forging, the squat bronze Deep Tide Lobber is bolted to your gun deck, dripping seawater and ready to strip enemy wards.

  • [Water mage] Have crewmate awaken the sphere's water-magic so she builds the gun for free.
    Crew: Water caster · Mage
crewmate places both hands on the bronze sphere and awakens its dormant siege runes. Fascinated by the ancient magic, the gunfounder waives her forty-silver fee and mounts the Deep Tide Lobber by morning!

Gallery Nine Pumped Dry

Right away7
By morning, Gallery Nine is bone-dry all the way to the cutting face, and the first shift of miners is marching back in with picks and lamps. The foreman opens the mine strongbox at the tunnel mouth. "Your pump works like a charm, captain. For the second half of your pay, do you want fifty silver in coin, or the first tub of twelve sky-crystals cut from the dry seam?"
  • Take the silver.
He counts out the second fifty silver and registers your ship as a friend of the mine.

  • [Pit office report] Ask for the mine's official shipping seal instead so all your contracts pay Master rates.
