The Lens Grinder
At the delivery port1 Deliver the salt-glass blanks.
The buyer is a gnome lens grinder with a jeweler's loupe on her forehead. She counts the glass blanks and holds one to the light. "These are for a long-range spyglass the Excise has outlawed. I still need a ship to salvage the brass frame for it—do that, and we'll share what the finished lens is worth."
- Agree to salvage the brass frame for her.She marks a spire on your chart where a survey kite crashed. "You're looking for a brass ring as wide as a barrel head. Bring it back, and half the finished lens is yours."
- [Gnome] Talk optics with her to learn about local Excise patrols.Crew: Gnomecrewmate and the grinder debate focal lengths for an hour. Impressed, she marks the wrecked kite on your chart along with the nearby Excise patrol routes.Reveal 2 waypoints
- Decline the salvage run and offer to deliver her finished lenses instead. She considers it, then packs a small case in straw. "A high-altitude observatory is waiting on these. Don't let any customs officer weigh the case."New job: Ground lenses
- Take your delivery pay and leave. She shrugs and counts out your silver, adding a small bonus for keeping the glass intact.+15 silverThe questline ends here.
The Plainclothes Officer
Right away2The shipping agent had good reason to watch the street. An out-of-uniform Excise inspector falls into step beside you on the dock. "That lens grinder just sent you after outlawed salvage. Tell me what and where, and I'll pay you silver on the spot. Or keep your mouth shut and walk away. Just don't lie to me—that'll cost you."
- Refuse to tell him anything. He tips his hat and lets you pass. An inspector like him already suspects where the survey kite crashed; he just wanted to see if you could be bought.
- Sell him the wreck's coordinates. He pays you in small coin and jots the coordinates on his cuff. Whatever you find at that spire, an Excise patrol will be heading there too.+20 silver−1 heat
- [Quartermaster] Have crewmate feed him false coordinates a day's flight off course.Crew: Quartermastercrewmate haggles hard enough to make the lie convincing, then sells him coordinates to a spire on the far side of the region. The inspector pays up and thanks crewmate for the tip.+20 silver
The Observatory Clerk
At the delivery port3 Deliver the ground lenses to the observatory.
A clerk signs for the case without opening it. "These lenses are for tracking the storm front from leagues away," he explains, nodding toward the spiral stairs leading up into the dome. "They're mounting them in the great telescope right now. Head on up—the chief astronomer likes to pay couriers in person."
- Climb the stairs to collect your pay. After a hundred and forty steps, you reach the dome. The astronomer pays your delivery fee straight from his purse without looking away from the telescope's eyepiece.+20 silver
- [Lookout] Bring your lookout up to compare sky charts with the astronomer.Room: LookoutYour lookout and the astronomer are trading sky observations before you even catch your breath. He pays your delivery fee and lets your lookout copy the nearby flight lanes from his master chart.+20 silverReveal 2 waypoints
The Snagged Kite
Sail to The Snagged Survey Kite (2–4 passages away)4 Recover the brass ring from the wrecked survey kite.
The wrecked survey kite hangs tangled in its own rigging on the rock spire, its silk sails torn to ribbons. The heavy brass ring is still bolted to its frame—but an armed Excise cutter is climbing the far side of the spire.
- Cut the brass ring free before the cutter spots you.
- [Avian] Send crewmate up the rigging to unbolt the ring quietly.Crew: Aviancrewmate swoops onto the frame, unbolts the brass ring in a minute flat, and drops it into your cargo net. The Excise cutter never sees a thing.
- Strip both the ring and the kite's instruments while the inspector searches the wrong spire. The cutter is only a routine patrol and passes the spire without slowing, while the plainclothes inspector is a day away searching the wrong side of the region. Your crew strips the kite clean at their leisure.+30 silver
- Call out to the Excise cutter and turn the wreck over for a finder's fee.The Excise lieutenant pays you a finder's fee and logs the brass ring as confiscated scrap. The lens grinder will not be pleased when she hears of it.+45 silver+1 The Crown standing−1 heatThe questline ends here.
- Leave it for now.You pull back from the spire. The wrecked kite isn't going anywhere.
The Long Look
Right away5Through the new lenses, the distant storm front looks like a towering gray wall with ships fleeing before it—clear enough to count. The astronomer steps back from the telescope. "We have a spare ranging eyepiece if you want to outfit your own ship. Or I can pay you in silver and copy our hazard sightings onto your chart."
- Take the spare ranging eyepiece for your ship. The heavy brass lens mounts cleanly to your sights, bringing distant ships close enough to count their gun ports.Fitting: Ranging LensThe questline ends here.
- Take the silver and copy their hazard charts. He unrolls a master chart of the sky ahead with every hazard marked, lets you copy it down, and pays you a generous bonus.Reveal 5 waypoints+40 silverThe questline ends here.
The Finished Lens
Right away6 Deliver the brass ring to the lens grinder.
Too impatient to wait at port, the gnome grinder has followed you out in a hired skiff. She taps the big salt-glass lens into the brass ring with a small jeweler's hammer. "Half yours, like I promised. Do you want the mounted spyglass for your ship, or half the silver from selling it?"
- Mount the finished spyglass on your ship. She helps your crew brace the finished Starglass at your Lookout rail, bringing the distant sky into razor-sharp focus.Relic: Star GlassThe questline ends here.
- Take your half of the sale price in silver. She buys out your share on the spot, paying a handsome sum of silver.+80 silverThe questline ends here.
- [Battery Deck] Have her grind a gunnery sight from the glass offcuts instead.Room: Battery DeckShe grinds a precision targeting lens from the leftover salt-glass and fits it directly to your Battery Deck sights.Relic: Precision RangefinderThe questline ends here.
