The Becalmed Barge

Right away1
A heavy foundry barge sits dead in the flight lane with her sails hanging limp. Lashed to her deck is a massive gray-green bell cast from raw sky-crystal slag. Every few minutes the bell hums on its own, killing every breath of wind around it. Barge master Idris Coe hails you across the gap: "I've been stranded here in dead air for three days! Tow me to port and you can have my share of this cursed bell!"
  • Burn 2 crystal to tow the windless, stranded barge into port.
You pass a heavy tow cable across and burn extra sky-crystal to drag the barge forward as the slag bell hums stubbornly the whole way.
    −2 crystal
  • [Air mage] Force wind into the barge's sails.
    Crew: Air caster · Mage
The slag bell drains every breeze crewmate conjures, but your mage forces enough wind into the barge's sails to keep her moving alongside you.
−15 mana (the crewmate who acted)
  • Leave him a cask of water and fly on.
He catches the water cask and slumps down on his deck as you pull away.
    −1 provisions

The Dead-Air Tow

Right away2
Half a day into the tow, the slag bell lets out a deep hum that kills the wind in your own sails too, making the barge drag behind you like a sea anchor. Idris shouts across the cable: "It gets worse at dusk! Wrapping wet canvas over the bell's mouth muffles the resonance—I have the heavy canvas, but no crew left able to climb the rig!"
  • Burn 1 extra crystal to power through the dead air until morning.
Your crystal drive strains against the bell's wind-killing hum all night and pulls you through. At dawn, Idris sends three crates of provisions across the tow line in thanks.
    −1 crystal+3 provisions
  • Send two crewmates across to lash wet canvas over the bell's mouth.
  • [Rigger] Send crewmate across the tow cable to muffle the bell safely.
    Crew: Rigger
crewmate crosses hand-over-hand on the tow line and binds the bell's mouth in wet canvas in under an hour, restoring your wind and earning three crates of provisions from Idris.

A Bell Half Paid For

At a port3
Finish towing the bell barge into port.
Once docked, Idris wipes his brow and explains the job: "That slag bell was cast for the keepers on Bell Rock in the next region, where fierce gales wreck three ships a year. They paid half upfront, and they'll pay the rest on delivery—or you can sell the bell right here to the Guild foundry for its raw crystal slag. Either way, the contract is yours now; I'm done with it."
  • Winch the slag bell aboard your ship and deliver it to Bell Rock.
It takes your cargo winch and every hand on deck to hoist the massive slag bell aboard. Even muffled, its aura makes your sails hang slightly slack.
  • Take the bell to the local Guild foundry to sell.
Idris gladly helps you roll the massive bell up to the Guild casting shed on timber rollers and walks away a free man.

The Bell Rock

Sail to The Bell Rock in the next region4
Deliver the slag bell to the signal keepers on Bell Rock in the next region.
Bell Rock rises from a storm-swept lane with an empty iron bell-gallows on its summit. As your ship approaches with the slag bell aboard, the howling gale drops to a dead calm—and an oar-driven wrecker galley rows out from behind the rock to intercept you! Hanging the bell here will calm the gales and ruin their ship-wrecking trade forever.
  • Fight the wrecker galley in the dead calm.
With no wind for either ship to maneuver by sail, the wrecker galley stows her oars and opens fire!
Battle: Sky pirates · Close range, Dead calmIf you win:+20 silver
  • [Fire mage] Incinerate the galley's oars before she can close into range.
    Crew: Fire caster · Mage
crewmate sweeps a torrent of flame down both banks of the galley's oars, leaving the wreckers stranded out of range while you winch the bell up onto the rock.
−18 mana (the crewmate who acted)
  • Soak the canvas muffle again to suppress the bell's aura and catch the wind.
Your crew drenches the canvas bindings over the bell's mouth until its wind-killing hum fades; a stiff breeze fills your sails, leaving the oar-driven galley far behind.
  • Call out to the wrecker galley to hear their captain's terms.
The galley backs her oars a gunshot away, and her captain rows across the still air in a small boat to parley.
  • Leave it for now.
You reverse course until your ship clears the bell's calm zone and catches the wind again.

The Guild Foundry

Right away5
The foundry master circles the massive bell twice and raps it with a knuckle; it hums once, making every furnace flame in the shed lean sideways. "A full ton of high-grade sky-crystal slag! I'll pay you eighty silver and six crystal shards to break it up today." From the back of the shed, an old founder speaks up: "Or let us melt it down into ship-sized hand bells, captain—any captain would pay for a bell that calms a storm in battle."
  • Have the foundry break the bell up for 80 silver and 6 crystal.
Sledgehammers ring all afternoon as the bell is broken down, yielding six pure sky-crystals along with your eighty silver.

  • Have them recast the slag into a ship-sized Calm Bell and pay you 70 silver.
The founders melt the slag down, casting a compact Calm Bell for your ship—which flattens storm winds when rung in combat—and paying you seventy silver for the remaining metal.

  • Change your mind and haul the bell to the keepers at Bell Rock after all.
The foundry master watches regretfully as your crew rolls the ton of crystal slag back down to the pier and winches it aboard.

The Bell Is Hung

Right away6
Hoist the slag bell onto the gallows at Bell Rock.
Two elderly brothers—the rock's keepers—help your crew winch the massive slag bell onto its iron gallows. It rings out a single deep note, and the turbulent air over Bell Rock settles into a permanent calm. "We owe you the second half of the bell's price, captain," the elder brother says, "but we have no silver—only the weather instruments our father used to chart this sky for forty years."
  • Take their father's brass weather Orrery for your ship.
Mounted beside your helm, the spinning brass Orrery predicts hail, squalls, and cinder-storms early enough to steer around them.
    The questline ends here.
  • Take a portable Calm Bell cast from the leftover slag and the 70-silver salvage chest.
The younger brother hands you a hand-bell cast from the same slag—which calms storms when rung in battle—along with seventy silver recovered from previous wrecks.

  • Persuade the keepers to rehire the lupine captain's crew as rock pilots.
After a brisk debate, the brothers agree: the bell calms the worst gales, and the pilots will guide ships through the shoals for a fair fee. In thanks, the keepers give you their father's brass Orrery and the reinstated pilots pay you their first thirty-silver fee!

The Wreckers' Captain

Right away7
The galley's captain is a gray-eared lupine woman with a pilot's whistle on a cord around her neck. "We were pilots on this rock until the Guild cut the pilot's fee to nothing. Then we became wreckers. Hang your bell and we starve. Sell it to us and it goes over the side, and we carry on as we are. Or hang it, and tell the keepers this rock needs its pilots back, at a fair fee."
  • Promise to get the keepers to rehire her crew as pilots once the bell is hung.
She studies your face, then blows three sharp notes on her whistle. Her galley crew stows their weapons and expertly helps your crew winch the heavy bell up onto the rock.

  • Refuse her deal and fight her galley to hang the bell.
She nods grimly, rows back to her galley, and orders her gunners to open fire in the dead calm!

  • Sell the slag bell to the wreckers for 90 silver.
The wreckers pay you ninety silver, tow the bell out past the rock, and dump it into the abyss so the gales will keep smashing ships onto their reef.
