A Drum of Rivets

Right away1
Floating in the wreckage is a keg-sized brass feed drum packed with heavy iron rivets in a spiral track. It fits no cannon your crew have ever seen, and its maker's plate reads: MARTA COLDHAMMER, COLDHAMMER SHIPYARD.
  • Stow the feed drum and look for Coldhammer's yard.
The maker's plate lists a shipyard in the next region downwind. You lash the heavy drum in the hold where it won't roll loose.
  • [Gunner] Have crewmate figure out what kind of weapon this drum feeds.
    Crew: Gunner
crewmate cranks the spiral track and counts the slots. "Five rivets a volley—someone built a rapid-fire cannon to punch ships full of iron." You mark the shipyard on your chart and stow the loose rivets in your ammo locker.
    +4 bolts
  • Scrap the drum for spare bolts.
You pry out six heavy bolts for your lockers and heave the empty brass casing overboard.
    +6 bolts
    The questline ends here.

The Oilcloth Packet

Right away2
As your crew hoist the drum, a waterproof oilcloth packet comes loose from its handle. Inside are a pawn ticket from Coldhammer's yard for "one riveting cannon, feed mechanism withheld," an overdue debt notice from a Compact toll sentry, and a light coin purse. A debt-broker's skiff is already nosing through the wreckage nearby.
  • Keep the pawn ticket and debt notice with the drum.
You pocket the fifteen silver from the purse and lock the papers in the captain's safe—they may prove useful at Coldhammer's yard.
    +15 silver
  • Sell the dead captain's papers to the debt broker for 50 silver.
The broker inspects the papers through a lens and pays you fifty silver without haggling, gladly buying up the dead captain's debts.
    +50 silver
  • [Quartermaster] Have crewmate audit the debt papers before stowing them.
    Crew: Quartermaster
crewmate totals the figures: the dead captain owed seventy silver to a border toll sentry that confiscated the cannon's feed gear, while the cannon itself sits in pawn at Coldhammer's yard. You pocket the fifteen silver and copy the sentry's coordinates onto your chart.

Coldhammer's Yard

Sail to Coldhammer's Yard in the next region3
Find Coldhammer's yard in the next region and ask about the rivet drum.
Shipwright Marta Coldhammer is a muscular gnome working beneath a drydocked hull. She recognizes the feed drum immediately. "That belongs to my prototype riveting cannon. A captain bought it on credit and turned it on merchant ships. The cannon came back to me in pawn, but a Compact toll sentry seized its feed mechanism for his unpaid tolls."
  • Offer to recover the cannon's feed mechanism from the toll sentry.
"Bring back the feed gear and the completed riveting cannon is yours—I won't sell the same gun twice." She marks the toll sentry's post on your chart.
  • Ask if she can use the rivet drum to armor your hull instead.
"Good rivets are never wasted. Bring your ship under my drydock crane."
  • Sell the rivet drum back to her for 50 silver.
She pays you fifty silver for the brass drum and the trouble of hauling it back.
    +50 silver
  • Leave it for now.
You leave the shipyard while the riveting hammers ring behind you.

The Debtor's Toll Post

Sail to The Debtor's Toll Post (2–4 passages away)4
Recover the riveting cannon's feed gear from the Compact toll sentry.
A heavy brass toll sentry floats in a narrow canyon pass with a blockade chain stretched between the cliffs. The cannon's feed mechanism is bolted right to its chest plate above a coin slot stamped: PAY DEBTS HERE.
  • Attack the toll sentry and take the feed gear by force.
The blockade chain drops as the sentry's gunports snap open in sequence.
Battle: Clockwork sentry · Long range
  • Pay the dead captain's 70 silver debt to release the gear.
    Costs 70 silver
You feed seventy silver into the slot; internal gears count the coins twice before dropping the feed mechanism and a stamped receipt into the collection tray.
  • Present Coldhammer's pawn ticket to dispute the seizure.
The sentry scans the pawn ticket and cross-checks its tariff code: because the cannon was already pawned to Coldhammer's yard, the debt claim applies to the shipyard rather than the gear. It unbolts the feed mechanism from its chest and hands it over.
  • [Gnome] Send crewmate through the sentry's maintenance hatch to unbolt the gear.
    Crew: Gnome
  • Leave it for now.
You turn back, leaving the blockade chain stretched across the pass.

In the Drydock

Right away5
Have Coldhammer's crew reinforce your hull with the rivets.
Marta's shipwrights wheel the rivet drum beneath your hull, driving heavy iron rivets into every weak seam. Walking the keel with a lantern, Marta calls up to you: "I can stop with the hull plating and pay you thirty silver for the leftover rivets, or for forty silver I can open up your cargo bay and install folding storage racks while she's on the blocks."
  • Finish the hull reinforcement and take the 30 silver.
Your reinforced hull rings like solid iron, and Marta pays you thirty silver for the remaining rivets.

    The questline ends here.
  • Pay 40 silver to install expanded cargo racks as well.
    Costs 40 silver
After two days of heavy carpentry, your ship leaves the drydock with reinforced hull plating and expanded cargo capacity.

The Pawn Shelf

Right away6
Marta counts out your coin beside a long shelf of unredeemed gear left in pawn by broke captains. Seeing you eye the shelf, she gestures along it. "All unclaimed. You can buy a piece for what I lent on it, or take forty silver more and call us square."
  • Take the extra 40 silver.
She hands over forty silver and returns to her drydock.
    +40 silver
    The questline ends here.
  • Buy a keg of shipyard hull caulking. (20 silver)
    Costs 20 silver
This fast-setting yard compound lets your repair crews seal hull breaches in half the normal time.

    The questline ends here.
  • [Gunner] Have crewmate pick out the best pawned cannon on the shelf. (40 silver)
    Crew: GunnerCosts 40 silver
crewmate inspects the dusty racks and selects a finely bored cannon in peak condition. Marta nods approvingly. "I took that one in by scrap weight—my loss is your gain."

    The questline ends here.
  • Redeem the dead captain's pawn ticket.
Marta reads the ticket and laughs. "Legally, I owe the bearer one riveting cannon—though without its feed gear, it's just a two-ton paperweight." She buys back the pawn ticket for sixty silver and throws in a keg of shipyard caulking.

The Riveting Cannon

Right away7
Have Marta Coldhammer assemble the riveting cannon.
Too eager to wait at the dock, Marta meets you on a shipyard barge. Within an hour she couples the drum, feed gear, and five-barrel frame into a working weapon. "The Rivet Storm is yours," she says. "Or leave the cannon with me, and I'll pay you sixty silver and build its rapid-feed mechanism into your ship's bolt racks."
  • Mount the five-barreled Rivet Storm cannon on your ship.
Your gun deck gains the five-barreled Rivet Storm cannon, whose first volley roars like a shipyard at high noon.
    The questline ends here.
  • Trade the cannon for 60 silver and a rapid-feed bolt rack.
Marta installs a spiral recovery chute under your ammo racks that recycles half your spent bolt casings, and pays you sixty silver for the cannon.

Paid in Full

Right away8
The sentry's ratchet voice announces your ship as the settling party. Under Compact tariff rules, whoever pays off a lien claims all impounded collateral: both the feed gear and a locked sea chest held inside the sentry for six years.
  • Open the impounded sea chest.
Inside the dead captain's chest you find thirty silver and four lamp crystals tucked into rolled socks.
    +30 silver+4 crystal
  • [Gnome] Have crewmate audit the sentry's interest calculations.
    Crew: Gnome
crewmate checks the tariff schedule and catches six years of overcharged compound interest. The sentry refunds twenty-five silver in overpayments on top of the thirty silver and four crystals inside the sea chest.
